    Patterns of Change: the Work of Loïs Mailou Jones By Catherine Bernard, Ph.D. Loïs Mailou Jones’ artistic development is intimately connected to her exposure to diverse cultures. The following brief survey of a career that spanned over six decades is an attempt to uncover the complexity of Jones’ creative development and to examine some of the artistic and political choices she made in direct relation to her travels to Europe, Haiti and the African continent. In fact, crucial stylistic changes occurred as she integrated the knowledge and experience gathered through her exposure to these different cultures, and her canvases reflect her enduring passion for people and places. Throughout the history of African-American art, a number of intellectuals, activists and artists traveled to Europe, Africa and the Caribbean and encountered new cultural environments. The chief motivation was to escape segregation and racism and to have the opportunity to explore new creative paths and materials in a friendlier atmosphere. In this regard, Jones’ itinerary is exemplary. She found herself at the crossroads of some the most influential movements of the 20th century: the Harlem Renaissance, the Civil Rights movements, Pan-Africanism. She participated in each of these movements while challenging herself by renewing her artistic choices continuously.   • Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Alpha
    Sororities and Fraternities Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was founded on the campus of Butler University by seven school teachers. Introduced to the UNC campus on November 16, 1990 with the induction of twelve members, the Lambda Psi Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. stands uncontested as a preeminent organization on this campus. The ladies of the Royal Blue and Gold maintain an excellent record of community service. The Lambda Psi chapter has been recognized locally and nationally for its amount of time spent serving the community. Some local organizations that Lambda Psi has supported have been the American Cancer Society, Habitat for Humanity, and the American Red Cross to name a few. The chapter has volunteered at meadowbrook convalescent Home, Ashlee’s Day Care Center, and the Chapel Hill Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in an effort to reach out to the elderly and youth of our community. The impact that Sigma Gamma Rho has had on this campus is a tremendous one. Charter mem­ bers of the chapter helped to ceate the Communiversity Saturday School Program. Members of the chapter have over time served in capacities such as assistant editor of the Black Ink, Communiversity Teen Outreach Instructional Staff, Black Student Movement Executive Committee, BSM Gospel Choir President and the National Pan- Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. was founded on the campus of Howard University on November 17, 1911 and incorporated on October 28, 1914. Our beloved fraternity was founded by four men of high ideals and high attainment.

Lois Mailou Jones served as a professor of art at the Howard University College of Fine Arts from 1930-1967. The collection includes 18 series: personal papers, family papers, correspondence, financial records, Howard University/teaching materials, writings by LMJ, writings about LMJ, writings by others, Pierre-Noel studios/illustrations, subject files, catalogs/brochures, books, clipping files, photographs, artifacts, audiovisual materials, oversize materials and scrapbooks. These various series contain materials documenting the life of LMJ as artist and the history and evolution of art. There are approximately 80 linear feet of material. The papers were donated by Lois Mailou Jones and deposited at the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center by Dr. Chris Chapman. The bulk of the materials documents the professional life of Lois Mailou Jones in the role of artistic mentor and Howard University faculty member.
