Sororities and Fraternities

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Sorority, Inc. was founded on the campus of by seven school teachers. Introduced to the UNC campus on November 16, 1990 with the induction of twelve members, the Lambda Psi Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. stands uncontested as a preeminent organization on this campus. The ladies of the Royal Blue and maintain an excellent record of community service. The Lambda Psi chapter has been recognized locally and nationally for its amount of time spent serving the community. Some local organizations that Lambda Psi has supported have been the American Cancer Society, , and the American Red Cross to name a few. The chapter has volunteered at meadowbrook convalescent Home, Ashlee’s Day Care Center, and the Chapel Hill Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in an effort to reach out to the elderly and youth of our community. The impact that Sigma Gamma Rho has had on this campus is a tremendous one. mem­ bers of the chapter helped to ceate the Communiversity Saturday School Program. Members of the chapter have over time served in capacities such as assistant editor of the Black Ink, Communiversity Teen Outreach Instructional Staff, Black Student Movement Executive Committee, BSM Gospel Choir President and the National Pan-

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. The Fraternity, Inc. was founded on the campus of on November 17, 1911 and incorporated on October 28, 1914. Our beloved fraternity was founded by four men of high ideals and high attainment. Brothers Ernest E. Just, Edgar A. Love, Oscar J. Cooper, and Frank Coleman joined together and created the greatest, and in essence, the only fraternity the world has ever seen.

The Mighty Psi Delta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

UNC’s first Black Greek organization was founded February 16, 1973 by two men. These two champions of vision to whom we are internally indebted were Brothers Herb Davis and Paul Woods. From the Nasty Nine o f'73 to Solitary Confinement and the Thunderous Two o f'96, the Psi Delta Chapter remains as glorious as it was intended to be. Join us in celebrating our 25th anniversary in 1997 as we continue “Uplifting As We Climb”.

Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was founded on , 1906, on the campus of Comeal University in Ithaca, . It has the distinct pleasure of being the first collegiate Black Greek letter wearing organization. There are seven founders, referred to as Jewels, of Alpha Fraternity inc. These men are: Jewel , Jewel Charles Henry Chapman, Jewel , Jewel George Biddle Kelley, Jewel Nathaniel Allison Murray, Jewel Robert Harold Ogle, and Jewel . The Alpha Chapter at Cornell was incorporated on January 29, 1908 and Fraternity, Inc. was nationally incorporated on April 3, 1912. On April 15, 1976 the Mu Zeta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was founded on the campus of UNC. There are eleven founders of the Mu Zeta Chapter; Mr. Elwood Becton, Mr. Kevin Benson, Mr. Carl L. Biggs, Mr. Calvin Burney, Mr. Moses Carey, Mr. Jerry Carter, Mr. David L. Gore,Jr., Mr. A. Leon miller, Mr. Bryant Moore, Mr. Japhet H. Nkonja, and Mr. James Rogers, Jr. There are several projects in which Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. undertakes. One is the “A Voteless People is a Hopeless People” voter registration drive. Another is Project Alpha, designed to educated teenage males on their roles in preventing untimely teenage pregnancies. The national program of Aplha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is the Go to High School, Go to College program which gives guidance to youths and counsels them on post-secondary education.
