positive business developments have been improved freight rates and lower bunker prices as well as cost savings of roughly $500 million resulting from the successful implementation of the Performance Safeguarding Program," Hapag- Lloyd said. Hapag-Lloyd attributed the gain to an increased average freight rate of $1,115 per TEU, up from $1,072 per TEU in 2019.But total 2020 volumes were down 1.6 per cent to 11.8 million TEU compared to 12 million the year before.Based on healthy third-quarter results, Hapag-Lloyd had raised its full-year 2020 forecast in October.

The YORKTOWN EXPRESS navigating the Westerschelde outbound from Antwerp Photo : Chris Rombouts © It said then that it expected EBITDA to come in at $2.8 billion to $3.04 billion and EBIT of $1.28 billion to $1.52 billion. Said CEO Rolf Habben Jansen: "The pandemic will remain a huge challenge and a major source of uncertainty for the entire logistics industry." In December, Hapag-Lloyd confirmed it had placed a $1 billion order for six ultra large containerships, each with a capacity of more than 23,500 TEU.The ships, which will be built by Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, will be delivered between April and December 2023. All six vessels will be deployed on Europe-Asia routes as part of THE Alliance, Hapag-Lloyd's alliance with Yang Ming, HMM and ONE. Source : Schednet

Oil shipments via CPC Marine Terminal in January 2021 fell by 26.6% YoY From the beginning of the year, the company handled 41 tankers In January 2021, CPC Marine Terminal (MT) loaded 4,120,449 gross tons (32,668,264 barrels) of crude oil, down 26.6%, year-on-year. The MT processed 41 tankers. Of 4,120,449 tons lifted in January 2021, 1,716,955 tons of crude was from Tengiz field, 993,792 tons from Karachaganak field, 817,329 tons from Kashagan field and 1,164 tons from other Kazakhstani producers. In January, the Kazakhstani producers shipped in total 3,529,240 tons of crude oil, and 591,209 tons of lifted crude was received from the Russian territory. As a reminder, the current monthly loading record was hit in March 2020. CPC MT then lifted 6,450,676 gross tons (51,118,685 barrels). This quantity of hydrocarbon crude was loaded in the tanks on 61 tankers. From 2001 through to January 31, 2021, 708,975,304 net tons of crude oil were delivered to the world markets via the Tengiz-Novorossiysk crude pipeline system. 618,198,419 tons of that crude came from Kazakhstan and 90,776,885 tons of crude was produced in Russia. The CPC pipeline system is one of the largest investment projects with foreign capital in the energy sector in the CIS. The length of Tengiz-Novorossiysk pipeline is 1,511 km; more than two thirds of all export crude oil from Kazakhstan and crude oil from the Russian fields, including those in the Caspian Region, are transported by this route. CPC Marine Terminal is equipped with three Single Point Moorings (SPM) that allow to load tankers safely at a significant distance offshore, also in poor weather conditions. CPC Shareholders: Russian Federation (represented by Transneft – 24% and CPC Company – 7%) – 31%; Republic of Kazakhstan (represented by Kazmunaygaz – 19% and Kazakhstan Pipeline Ventures LLC – 1.75%) – 20.75%; Chevron Caspian Pipeline Consortium Company - 15%, LUKARCO B.V. - 12.5%, Mobil Caspian Pipeline Company – 7.5%, Rosneft- Shell Caspian Ventures Limited – 7.5%, BG Overseas Holding Limited - 2%, Eni International N.A. The B GAS MASTER outbound between the IJmuiden breakwaters Photo : Peter Maanders Port Towage Amsterdam © NAVTOR optimises potential with fleet management and performance move in NavFleet launch Global e-Navigation leader NAVTOR has announced a bold move into the realm of fleet management and performance optimisation with the launch of NavFleet, the company said in its release. The breakthrough application, developed over the past two years in collaboration with key shipowners, opens up a new horizon of possibilities for users – enabling real- time operational insight, performance optimisation and enhanced business decision making. NAVTOR CEO Tor Svanes says the product heralds “a future of efficiency, performance, intelligence and cost control” for owners of all sizes and segments. NAVTOR has made its name through the development of a suite of innovative e-Navigation products, delivered, updated and connected through a cyber secure ecosystem that unites shoreside and vessel teams. This provides the platform for NavFleet, which seamlessly integrates real-time data from vessels, fleets, offices and an array of business-critical sources within a single, user-friendly, shoreside application. Performance optimisation is a key NavFleet selling point, with the ability to benchmark, troubleshoot, refine and share best practices across fleets, while solving individual vessel issues. For example, if a shoreside team knew what rpm should

produce a speed of 10knots in good weather conditions, vessel engines could be set accordingly and ongoing speed monitored. If speed doesn’t meet expectations a hull performance issue could be identified, with bio-fouling producing frictional drag, hampering performance, and impacting on fuel consumption and efficiency. NavFleet would deliver this insight. But, Svanes notes, that is really just the tip of the iceberg. The new awareness also enables easier compliance, alongside simplified reporting and administration, with the ability to automate key reports. Amongst these will be the mandated EU MRV/IMO DCS reports, which can be produced at the touch of a NavFleet button from later in 2021. A new approach to operational report handling will allow reports (e.g. noon reports) to be sent directly from vessels, but accessed from anywhere through the application. In addition, NavFleet’s real-time monitoring capabilities will help office-based teams determine if vessels are falling short of KPIs or deviating from passage plans, facilitating swift remedial action. This ability makes it easier for owners to adhere to the covenants in charter party agreements, potentially avoiding performance claims and strengthening working relationships. NAVTOR opened its doors in Egersund, in 2011, and has since grown into the world’s leading supplier of innovative e-Navigation solutions. It now operates a global network of eight full-time offices and has more than 20 international distributors. The company currently boasts customers in over 60 countries, from all shipping segments, with products and services onboard around 7000 individual vessels. The SEABEE navigating the Westerschelde Photo : Mateo Witte © The Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index, which tracks rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, on Monday was down at its lowest since early January, as rates weakened across vessel segments. The Baltic dry index, tracking rates for capesize, panamax and supramax vessels ferrying dry bulk commodities, fell 8 points, or 0.6%, to 1,444. The index extended its losing streak to seven sessions. The capesize index was down 19 points, or 1%, at 1,871, its lowest since Dec. 22. Average daily earnings for capesizes, which typically transport 150,000-tonne cargoes such as iron ore and coal, were down $159 at $15,516.China's coking coal futures slumped for a tenth straight session on Monday, dragged down by

weakening demand for the raw material and easing concerns over supply in the world's top steel producer. The panamax index edged 3 points, or 0.3% lower, to 1,630, a near two-week low. Average daily earnings for panamaxes, which usually carry coal or grain cargoes of about 60,000 tonnes to 70,000 tonnes, fell $26 to $14,669. The supramax index was down 3 points at 1,162. Importers including Indian Oil Corp. and Petronet LNG Ltd. have issued at least eight tenders seeking supplies for February to March delivery in the last two weeks. So far, four of them have been awarded. Most end-users stopped buying cargoes from late-December, when spot rates began to skyrocket. The country’s LNG buyers can afford to be more opportunistic than rivals because the fuel in India is used mostly in industrial applications rather than power generation, and it competes against fuel oil instead of coal. The purchases follow a spate of panic buying by North Asia consumers who sought to secure supplies amid colder-than-expected weather. The resurgence of demand from India and other regional buyers may help support Asian spot prices from falling much further. Pakistan LNG Ltd. saved about $30 million by scrapping a tender seeking March cargoes that closed Jan. 15 due to high prices, and re-issued a new one that closed earlier last week. The F900 Eco-Lifter vessels are the most fuel-efficient heavy lift vessels in service. “The carbon footprint of the F900 class is 30-50% less compared to the existing heavy lift fleet in the market.” states Mr. Bonnesen, managing director of UHL. “The new vessels offer superior intake and crane capacity to cater to the needs of a wide range of industry clients and cargos.” he adds. The vessels’ weather deck encompasses 2,990 Sqm (123.5 m x 25.6 m).

Buying interest is increasingly focused on smaller tonnage. Clarksons Research noted in its most recent weekly report that activity is primarily in the kamsarmax down to the panamax sectors.Prices have leapt since December. A notable sale that illustrates the price increase is the sale of the 2010 Japanese-built kamsarmax, Key Evolution. This ship fetched $14.7m in December, but failed and is now sold for one million more. In a comparable deal, the 2012-built, 78,000-dwt, CORAL AMETHYST has been sold for $16.3m, $1.8m

Tankers: VLCCs Stabilize After Weeks of Downward Trend VLCC The VLCC sector saw rates pretty much static last week with ‘earnings’ ever so slightly up. In the Middle East, 280,000mt to US Gulf via the Cape/Cape routing were unchanged at W18/18.5 level and 270,000mt to China ticked up a single point to WS32.5 level (just about a positive TCE). In the Atlantic region, rates for 260,000mt West Africa to China hovered around WS32.5, whilst rates for 270,000mt US Gulf to China gained close to $80k to settle around $4.3m.

Suezmax In the 135,000mt Black Sea/Med market we saw rates climb a further seven points to now be assessed around WS70- 72.5 level (about $7,000/day). The West African market, meanwhile, again saw the biggest increase where 130,000mt Nigeria/UK Continent rates climbed more than 7.5 points to between 67.5-70 level (about $13,000 per day). In the 140,000mt Basrah/Med market, rates firmed two points to WS20-21 region.

Aframax Rates for 80,000mt Ceyhan/Lavera increased five points this week to WS77.5-80 level (just over $1,800/day TCE). In Northern Europe, rates for voyages of 80,000mt cross- remained static at WS77.5 (a TCE of about -$6.5k/day). The 100,000mt Baltic/UK-Continent rates dipped two more points to WS58 (about $1,700 per day). On the other side of the Atlantic, the market eased with rates for 70,000mt Carib to US Gulf falling five points to about WS82.5/85 level (just below $3k/day TCE). For the 70,000mt US Gulf to UK Continent trip, rates fell back three points to a fraction below WS73. Clean In the Middle East Gulf/Japan trade, charterers have held the upper hand and owners have seen rates eroded further with 75,000mt to Japan easing around 2.5 points to low WS70s. In the 55,000mt trade, the market is still hovering at, or very close to, mid WS70s. In the 35,000mt AG/East Africa trade, the start of the week saw rates readjust down 8.5 points to WS140. It has continued to soften with the market now at WS 135 and remains under pressure. For owners plying the 37,000 Cont/USAC market, it has been a positive week with the market gaining 15 points to WS130 level. However, with

the weak market in the US Gulf, tonnage is ballasting across to the Continent. And, from 10th February onwards, the tonnage list consequently opens out somewhat so the market will need sustained enquiry if rates are to be main maintained here. The backhaul trade of 38,000mt from US Gulf to UK-Continent has been steady at an insipid WS75 region, while the 38,000mt US Gulf to Brazil run has seen four points shaved off the rates, which now sit at WS107.5/108 region. In the 30,000mt cross-Mediterranean trade, a slower week and lack of weather delays saw rates readjust downwards from low WS160s to sit now in the very low WS 150s. Brokers feel there is potential for further softening here. Source: The Baltic Briefing

Opening Reception: Ken Chang, President of Giant and Taiwan International Ports Heavy-Machinery Co (extreme right), Chris Schraa, General Manager of Mammoet Taiwan (second to the right), and VIP guests from various embassies and the Taiwan Port Customs.

Dutch heavy lift and transportation company Mammoet is opening a new office in Taichung, Taiwan, to allow its team to be located closer to project sites and to offer onshore services for offshore wind farms locally. "Due to the rapid expansion of Mammoet’s business in Taiwan with joint venture partner Giant Heavy Machinery Services Corp and its recent cooperation with Taiwan International Ports Corporation, Mammoet has announced that it will open a new office in Taichung, Taiwan," the company said. The cooperation with TIPC will operate under the name TIPH which stands for Taiwan International Ports Heavy- Machinery Co. Currently, the Taiwan government is rolling out its plans to achieve 25% of local electricity generation from renewable sources - in particular wind energy through offshore windfarms. Following the successful Formosa 1 demonstration project, with 22 turbines of 8 MW generating enough energy for 130,000 homes, the Taiwan government is planning future wind projects adding 1GW per year until 2035. Taichung Port has been earmarked to be the offshore hub for years to come. "Mammoet’s unparalleled experience and expertise in the wind energy and renewables sector will allow the company to be involved in supporting the construction of these windfarms both safely and efficiently. Mammoet’s level of service will be enhanced by this new office, located strategically in Taichung, next to a quay area marked for turbine pre-assembly work," Mammoet said. In particular, Mammoet says it will provide engineering, heavy lifting and transportation solutions including marshalling, ballasting, weighing, load-in and load-out transportation services. "As for equipment, Mammoet Taiwan now has 200+ axle-lines of SPMT and a super heavy lift PTC200 DS ring crane. Services are supported by a well-connected leadership team and a workforce of over 150 employees," Mammoet said. Chris Schraa, Managing Director for Mammoet Taiwan, said: “Our strong joint venture with Giant Heavy Machinery Services Corp and the new cooperation with the Taiwan International Ports Corporation means that the time now is right for us to move closer to where we execute our projects. We have extensive experience in delivering safe and timely engineered solutions for wind power and renewables projects and aim to find the most efficient and cost-effective solution for Taiwan’s offshore wind industry.” Mammoet says it will now have a total of three offices on the island. The offices are located in Hsinchu, Taichung, and Kaohsiung. "All three locations offer various services as well as workshop facilities for in-house maintenance and repair. Mammoet believes these three offices together will enable the company to create a cohesive service network to further strengthen Mammoet’s service capabilities in Taiwan," the company said. Petrobras To Sell Entire Stake in Onshore Field of Sergipe Petrobras on 11 December signed a contract with Energizzi Energias do Brasil to sell its entire stake in the onshore field of Rabo Branco, located south of the Carmópolis field in the Sergipe-Alagoas Basin, Sergipe state. The Rabo Branco field is part of the BT-SEAL-13 concession. The $1.5-million sale is in line with Petrobras’ strategy to cut costs and improve its capital allocation, to focus its resources increasingly on deep and ultradeep waters. The average oil production of the field, from January to October 2020, was 138 B/D. Energizzi Energias do Brasil will own 50% stake in the Rabo Branco field; operator Produção de Óleo e Gás (Petrom) holds the remaining 50%.On 10 December, Petrobras closed the divestiture of its full ownership in four onshore fields at the Tucano Basin site in the state of Bahia. Petrobras sold its entire interest to Eagle Exploração de Óleo e Gás (Eagle). SINGAPORE-HEADQUARTERED Ocean Network Express (ONE) of Japan, like its competitors, has benefited from towering rates, which were turned into a profit close to US$1 billion in the last quarter of 2020. The Japanese ocean carrier recorded a net profit of $944 million for its third quarter, October-December, and expects to see profits of $2.5 billion for the full year. That would represent an astonishing 172 per cent upgrade on its November guidance, thanks to huge hikes in freight rates hitting the carrier's bottom line. Moreover, it would appear that ONE is being conservative with its $900 million net profit Q4 forecast for January to March, given the impact of even higher rates well into this quarter. Q3 revenue surged by 29 per cent, compared with Q3 19, at $3.76 billion. ONE does not release data on its total liftings, but on the main Asia-US and Asia-Europe headhaul routes it did reveal it carried 730,000 TEU and 402,000 TEU respectively during the period, achieving over 100 per cent utilisation on both trades, due to its deployment of extra loaders. Based on

Distribution : daily to 43.200+ active addresses 04-02-2021 Page 17 DAILY COLLECTION OF MARITIME PRESS CLIPPINGS 2021– 035

its own freight index, set at 100 in 2018, ONE's average rate per TEU in the quarter stood at 125 percentage points for Asia-Europe westbound, and 140 Asia-US eastbound, compared with just 98 and 104 for the same quarter of 2019. The carrier also said that it had benefited from a reduction in bunker price from $417 to $314 per tonne. "The resurgence of Covid-19 has led to labour shortages and operational restrictions in many locations, which has resulted in port congestion and longer port stays, due to lower productivity and heavy rail and truck traffic," said ONE. It had chartered additional ships and deployed extra sailings in order to recover schedule integrity and to "rescue rolled cargo". Currently ONE is the sixth-ranked container line by capacity, with a fleet of 224 ships and an operating capacity of 1.6 million TEU, reports UK's The Loadstar. Source : Schednet

Holland America Line Names Captain Werner Timmers Master of Rotterdam Pinnacle Class ship is under construction and slated for delivery at the end of July 2021

Holland America Line has named Werner Timmers, a captain with nearly 40 years sailing for the cruise line, to take the helm of Rotterdam when the ship enters service in July 2021. Captain Timmers joined Holland America Line in 1984 and has worked on all classes of ship within the brand, most recently as master of KONINGSDAM. Captain Timmers will head to Rotterdam in the coming months for sea trials and then relocate to the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, where the ship is being built, to oversee the finishing touches before delivery. "As one of the longest-serving officers in our fleet with a wealth of experience, we are pleased to name Captain Timmers master of Rotterdam," said Gus Antorcha, president of Holland America Line. "His years of seamanship and hospitability with both guests and crew will continue to create a culture on board that promotes excellence in service and a passion for travel." Since first joining Holland America Line in 1984 as an intern, Captain Timmers has worked his way up the ranks to captain, which he achieved in 1996. He has since been master of EURODAM, KONINGSDAM, NIEUW AMSTERDAM, RYNDAM, ZAANDAM and ZUIDERDAM. "I am deeply honored to be named the first master of ROTTERDAM, and I look forward to getting on board for the sea trials and seeing the ship come together during the final stages of construction," said Captain Timmers. "My long career with Holland America Line has been filled with so many wonderful milestones, and this appointment is a highlight." A native Dutchman, Captain Timmers grew up in Roosendaal, the . He chose a career at sea in his final year of high school after hearing a seafarer tell tales of adventure during career day. He joined the Nautical Academy in Vlissingen, the Netherlands, and after graduating with a degree in nautical sciences, he obtained a second degree in marine engineering and rejoined Holland America Line as a fourth officer. Asia to northern Europe has increased from US$2,000 in November to more than $9,000. "It's a bottleneck problem. These rates are being driven by customers fighting over a limited resource - containers," said SeaIntelligence CEO Lars Jensen. Thousands of empty containers were in the US and Europe during the first half of 2020 when shipping lines cancelled hundreds of sailings due to the Covid crisis. However, when western demand for Asian-made goods rebounded in the second half of 2020, competition for available containers made freight rates soaring. "We've gone from a tremendous drop-off to getting whipsawed into historically high cargo volumes and there's now more than terminals can efficiently handle," said World Shipping Council (WSC) president John Butler. Congestion is causing higher prices, with shipping lines charging extra fees to compensate for longer wait times. Edge Worldwide executive Philip Edge declared some businesses were being charged $12,000 per container, up from $2,000 in October. Meanwhile, the UK's Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances stated its members reported an increase of shipping costs of up to 300 per cent since the start of 2020. "Producers do not expect to be able to absorb these huge increases in freight costs," said the association. Source : Schednet Underwater insert repair in Rotterdam

A 130-meter chemical tanker suffered erosion damage in the grey water tank. Hydrex was contacted by the owner to provide an underwater solution that would allow the vessel to keep its schedule. A team of their diver/technicians therefore mobilized to Rotterdam to perform on-site repairs. This type of smaller damage is created over time as the result of the recurring impact of for instance water on the exact same spot over and over again. On vessels this occurs regularly in the ballast tanks under bell mouths or sounding pipes as was the case with the chemical tanker. If the damage is caught before the hull plates are perforated, clad welding can be used to fill up the area. This is also a permanent repair that will avoid a condition of class. During the operation in Rotterdam this was no longer an option as a hole had formed in the hull plating. A fast, permanent solution The divers started the operation by installing a cofferdam on the waterside of the affected plating. Next they removed the sounding pipe covering the area on the inside. They could then safely remove a plug which had been installed as a temporary solution. The damaged plating was then cleaned and prepared for the operation. As agreed with the classification society, the team then cut away an area measuring 300 x 300 mm. Next they prepared the edges of the hole for the insert and positioned the new plate. The insert was then welded following the Hydrex class-approved procedure for insert plates, using a full penetration weld. An independent inspector carried out ultrasonic testing and the repair was approved by the classification surveyor who was present

during the operation. The team then reinstalled the sounding pipe and removed the cofferdam. A small round doubler plate was installed under the pipe to prevent the new insert from eroding again. Conclusion Hydrex offers class approved permanent repairs for this type of damage. These combine underwater cofferdam installation and inside dry welding. The company has a wide range of cofferdams at their disposal as well as certified plating which they can mobilize immediately to any location. Both parts of such an operation are performed by the same team of in-house trained diver/welders working at the highest quality standards. In most cases normal commercial activities can continue without disruption. On January 2, the Danish company DFDS opened the Dunkirk- Rosslair line in southeastern . It allows carriers to reach the from other EUs without having to cross the UK, avoiding new customs and barriers imposed with Brexit earlier this year. Since then, AFP Director Glenn Carr said the port has seen a 476 percent increase in cargo traffic to Europe over the past year. From three direct weekly

services to 15 in Europe today, ”he adds.On the way to the ships, a sign goes out to visitors announcing “Rossaler Europort: Gate to Europe”. – Do not cross the UK – On January 31, 2020, the UK E officially left the European Union, more than three-and-a-half years after the referendum, and the country voted 52% in favor of Brexit. With the end of the post-Brexit transition period, the results of this decision began to be felt only earlier this year. Irish carriers facing restrictions and delays due to new procedures are increasingly reluctant to use the to connect Ireland to the mainland, as they have done in the past. Prior to Brexit, each year 150,000 trucks transported three million tons of cargo this way in and out of the European Union, quickly crossing the to Wales and then to the English Channel in the south of England. In early January, Harbor – the main link of this “land bridge” – experienced a sudden calm in its flow and some ships were canceled by companies. Since then, Rosler’s Port, much smaller than Dublin but Ireland’s second largest cargo hub, seems to have become the new preferred route to Europe, even more complicated than crossing the UK by sea. “When we have to travel with goods from one stage to another, we realize that there is not much difference between this route and the land bridge,” says Carr. “But here you don’t have to fill out paperwork, you save fuel, and drivers relax more.” According to Carr, there are some signs that dealer and consumer habits have changed since the end of the transition period. “Many leading Irish retailers now bring their products directly from Continental Europe,” he says. “We see big customers like Amazon bringing in a lot of exports every day.” Source : swordstoday

US Asian imports hit records in December on Covid gear and ecommerce US imports from Asia were up 29.9 per cent in December year on year to 1.626 million TEU, behind October and August, according to PIERS data, reports IHS Media. For all of 2020, imports from Asia totalled 16.6 million TEU, up 4.1 per cent from 2019, with the import surge beginning in late June. This is expected to continue for two months as retailers ship in more before some factories in Asia close for the Chinese New Year. .December is normally a slow month in the eastbound transpacific, as most of the holiday merchandise has been shipped, and the product moved via rail to inland hubs. But record e-commerce sales as well as shipments of personal protective equipment (PPE) and medical supplies changed all that. As imports entered the supply chain, congestion rose at intermodal hubs in the interior. Intermodal traffic of all kinds rose 2.38 per cent in December from November, according to the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA). It was the first time since 2015 that December's intermodal volume was stronger than in November. Intermodal volume in the fourth quarter was up 9.62 per cent from Q4 2019, the strongest year-over-year quarterly growth rate since December 2013, according to IANA. The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach and New York-New Jersey suffered from congestion because a large portion of last year's imports were squeezed into the final six months of the year. Also, container shortages emerged at Asian load ports, and shipments were rolled. In December, 37 per cent of containers at Shanghai were rolled over till the next voyage, according to supply chain visibility provider Ocean Insights. Rollover ratio in Port Klang was 55 per cent last month, ands 42 per cent in Singapore. Vessels were so backed up at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, which handles about 50 per cent of US imports from Asia, in December that 28 to 30 vessels each day had to sit at anchor outside the ports waiting for berthing space to open, according to the Marine Exchange of Southern California. Waits of seven days or longer were common. Equipment shortages surfaced in Chicago and Minneapolis when intermodal volumes spiked last fall in Chicago and in Minneapolis-St Paul last month. Uruguay is reportedly seeking to acquire three decommissioned Marine Protector Class cutters from the US Coast Guard. First Image Of China’s New Nuclear Submarine Under Construction By : H I Sutton Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) reveals what appears to be the first publicly available image of China's new nuclear powered submarine. The commercial satellite image was taken by Maxar and is part of a recent Google Earth image refresh.China has built a massive new yard for building nuclear submarines. The site, near to the legacy Bohai shipyard where all of China’s nuclear submarines are currently built, is still being developed.

The satellite image, taken by Maxar and uploaded to Google Earth, shows the aft section of the submarine outside the construction hall. But the main constriction halls have been complete for some time. New commercial satellite imagery, available to anyone via Google Earth, appears to show the first hull section of a new submarine. The exact class of submarine has not yet been confirmed. But it is possibly either the first Type-095 Tang-class attack submarine (SSN) or the first Type-096 ballistic missile sub (SSBN). The section is the tail of the submarine. This is to be expected as most submarines are assembled such that the nose (bow) comes out of the construction hall first. Witness US Navy and Royal Navy nuclear submarines for example. The new submarine will be part of the Chinese Navy’s (PLAN) massive expansion. Nuclear powered submarines will be critical to its ambition of becoming a true blue-water Navy. New Type-095 (more properly written Type-09V) is an attack submarine which is expected to be more closely comparable to the US Navy’s Virginia-class. And the Type-096 (Type- 09VI) which increase the survivability and reach of China’s at sea nuclear deterrent. I first spotted the hull section in Sentinel-2 low-resolution commercial satellite imagery in early November 2020. That was before this high-resolution imagery became available. The hull section is approximately 30-32 meters long and roughly 11-12 meters across. This points to the new Type-095 and Type-096 boats. The other possibility is an improved version of the current Type-093 Shang-class. This would logically be the Type-093B cruise-missile optimized version. This is expected to feature vertical launch tubes similar to the Russian Yasen-class. These will allow it to carry more YJ-18 cruise missiles. However the approximate measurements are making the completely new classes a safer bet at this stage. These new classes will be more advanced than the Type- 093, with increased levels of stealth. The Type-095 in particular may become very relevant if the PLAN increases its prescience in the Indian Ocean. Analysts using commercial satellite imagery, often Open Source, will be watching the submarine modules as they make their way to the construction hall. The next one should be the machinery compartment, followed by the reactor compartment. We will literally see the submarine in parts before it is assembled. However careful analysis will be needed to interpret what we are seeing. Source : Naval News Crew from visiting Navy ship quarantining in San Diego hotels after COVID-19 outbreak By KRISTINA DAVIS Most of the 350 sailors aboard the U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer Chafee have been placed under quarantine in San Diego hotel rooms following a COVID-19 outbreak among the crew, according to Navy officials. An unspecified number of sailors assigned to the Hawaii-based ship have tested positive and have been isolating off the ship, according to Third Fleet spokesman Cmdr. Sean Robertson. Officials had initially said about a dozen personnel had tested positive. The rest of the crew received tests on Friday in response to the outbreak. “In order to ensure the health of the force and guarantee mission readiness, most of the crew members assigned to USS Chafee have been placed in a Restriction-of-Movement (ROM) status in hotels in the local San Diego area,” Robertson said. “A caretaker crew will remain aboard in order to support the ship’s operational and material readiness, and execute necessary support functions.”The ship will also be cleaned, he said. None of the infected sailors have required hospitalization, Robertson said. The ship, homeported in Pearl Harbor, has been in San Diego for training exercises. Source : The San Diego Union-Tribune

S. Korean shipbuilders expect to dominate global market on back of LNG carriers By : Cho Sung-min retained its status as the world-leading shipbuilding industry last year despite many COVID-19 challenges. Experts forecast the new year will treat domestic shipmakers better as they will benefit from the introduction of eco- friendly policies. South Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering has developed a technology that helps determine the safety of liquefied natural gas carriers in its shipyards. This saves time and helps cut operating costs,as the shipmaker previously had to take new LNG vessels to one of two specific shipyards to carry out special tests. Thanks to technological developments, South Korea took more than 40 percent of the global orders and maintained its position as the world's top shipmaker last year.Industry experts say the domestic shipyards' performance is likely to catch a massive tail wind in 2021,with the anticipated introduction of new environmental regulations as well as rising global demand for eco-friendly vessels. The European Union hinted at new measures for carbon emissions targeting ships entering its ports. To accommodate these changes and bolster its shipbuilding capabilities, South Korea has vowed to support the development of new technologies.

"The oceans and trade ministries will invest over 870 million dollars from 2022 to 2031 in innovative eco-friendly shipbuilding technologies projects. We also plan to give national certificates to eco-friendly vessels and materials to help commercialize new technologies and turn them into global standards." Building LNG carriers requires technical precision and the ability to meet high production standards. The right technology is also needed so that the gas can be kept at 163 degrees Celsius while being stored. With this technology in place, Korean companies are able to stay ahead of their rivals. "Without the right technology, it's hard to adapt to the market. We can say there's a lot for the domestic shipyard to benefit from the changing trend." Experts believe the number of global ship orders will jump 24 percent from last yearand many indicators predict a rosy outlook for South Korean shipmakers. Cho Sung-min, Arirang News.
