5 Church Fenton Parish Council

Clerk Recruitment We are pleased to announce and welcome Georgina Ashton as our new clerk. Georgina has lived within the Church Fenton area all her life, many of you may know her as Georgina Hill. Georgina currently lives at Little Fenton, her local knowledge will be invaluable to the councillors.

New Email Addresses All parish councillors now have parish council email addresses, please note the new addresses below as well as the new email address for the clerk.

Planning Update on the land near St Mary’s Church The application for planning for fifty houses to the south of St Mary’s Church was considered by Council at planning committee on March 4th and was refused by Selby District Council as the style and design of the houses were not in keeping with this historic setting. We will keep you updated and informed should an appeal be lodged. As a PC we objected to this application, along with the majority of the villagers, your views on developments are captured in our emerging Neighbourhood Development Plan. Thank you to everyone in the village who shared their objections with SDC and contributed towards the application being refused.

COVID-19 At the time of writing we are still in ‘lockdown’ and some of us are practicing self-isolation. We hope everyone is well and still staying safe, it has been an incredibly difficult time for all of us, our lives have changed dramatically and we are unsure when it will go back to ‘normal’. As a Parish Council we thank Tadcaster Community Action Group, who gave us advice and guidance on being able to offer support to those who may need it during this difficult period. A sub-group was set up and hopefully you found our newsletters useful, with ideas of things to do and businesses offering services still available during lockdown, including the all important takeaway. We thank the team at Fenton in Focus who supported us with printing and also the volunteers who delivered the leaflets and offered to support with those more vulnerable people in the village. Big thanks to all those who volunteered in the Community Shop to keep it trading and completed home deliveries. As a community we have really pulled together to support each other and we hope this continues once we are able to all meet up again freely. As a parish council we have tried where possible to conduct ‘business as usual’, this includes our on-going projects, the play provision, traffic calming, Neighbourhood plan and a new cemetery site. We have continued with our monthly meetings, using virtual meetings where appropriate to do so and the public have been welcome to join us, all details are available on the agenda and via the clerk, so feel free to join us in this way.

Highway Issues We are still awaiting County Council implementing double yellow lines on Sandwath Lane. The parish council have asked them to consider implementing double yellow lines on parts of Station Road, most notably opposite the entrance to Bridge Close and also on the corners of Oakwood Close as the line of sight is often reduced dramatically due to cars parking too close to the junction.

We ask everyone to consider these areas when parking in the village and that you also leave tactile paving at pedestrian crossings clear.

Network Rail Upgrade Network Rail held an information meeting for the village in February regarding the transpennine upgrade works required between Church Fenton and stations. The works have already started and are 6 planned to continue until ugust . The parish council are continuing to work with etwork ail and orth orkshire County Council to ensure that the disruption for the village is reduced as much as possible whilst the work takes place.

o ouln Thank you to all those dog owners who clear up after them, it is appreciated. owever, since C lockdown we have had numerous complaints about dog faeces, particularly across the public footpaths. e ask that you please clean up after your dog as the use of the public footpaths has increased along. ogs should be kept on a lead particularly when walking along streets and by roads.

Writing anything for Fenton in Focus is always tricky as the deadline for each edition is around a month before the magazine is distributed. And so, I find myself on a few days at the very end of April and the very beginning of May, writing for a magazine that will cover June, July and August. As things stand, I really have very little idea of what might happen next week, let alone in a few months. We find ourselves in a very strange situation indeed. Along with many other things across the country, church is closed and it is not clear when we will be able to reopen. Very recently, the Prime Minister has announced that there will be a comprehensive plan soon on how to restart the economy, reopen schools and how to make life in the workplace safer. Thoughts about places of worship may be included in this. This sounds encouraging but who knows what this actually means for life from June until the end of August and beyond. Maybe churches will still be closed, maybe they will be open (although we may have to reimagine how we do things for some time). These are difficult and testing times and many people are struggling. However, the sign outside the cartoon church at the top of the page is true – “The building is closed - The church is open”. In some ways, we have continued to do what we have always done but online. If, when you read this, the church building is still closed, you can join us for a church service every Sunday morning at 10.00am on Zoom (Meeting ID 986-101-2744, password 377646). If, when you read this, schools are still closed, you can join us live for Collective Worship / Assembly every Thursday morning at 10.00am on the St. Mary’s Church Church Fenton Facebook page. There are other things happening throughout the week too. 10 n other ays e have done things dierently especially in the ay that e stay in contact ith the most vulnerable people in our community. e have discovered that hat has been said or years and years is actually true – the church is not the building, it’s the people. When we hear that Jesus loves “the church” this doesn’t really mean the building. Special though our stained glass and bell toers and pes and altars etc are the people are really hat esus loves. espite all o the many real diiculties at church and elsehere there have been positives in lockdon. At St. Mary’s, people have “come to church” (on Zoom) who otherwise wouldn’t be able to – amily scattered around the orld people ill in bed people ho don’t like going out in the evenings, people who can’t get out of the house, families where the baby has been up all night and noone’s had time to get dressed. n our communities ne relationships ith neighbours have been orged rom a distance people are looking ater vulnerable members o the community and e have a neound appreciation o key orkers especially those in previously undervalued proessions. erhaps as e look to returning to “normal”, we need to hold on to lessons that we have learnt. am not trying to gloss over diicult times or try to paint an overly positive pictures but good things – in amongst dark days and hard times – have come out o our lockdon eperiences. I’m not totally convinced that I want to rush back to “normal”, at least not if that means things going back to being eactly as they ere beore. Normally we include a diary in Fenton in Focus but that’s very difficult to do. We will deinitely be meeting or orship. church is closed oin us on oom. church is open keep an eye out or posters ith service details or contact the church oice on 0 1. Stay sae and od bless Simon

Latest update from Church Fenton Community Hub

Unfortunately, at this time, Church Fenton Community Hub has not been particularly active as a result of the restrictions imposed to protect the safety of everyone due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It is unusually strange for all of us, and we hope that everyone is coping with the lockdown. If you have had time to reflect on ways that Church Fenton Community Hub could become involved in other projects, we would love to hear from you. All ideas are welcome, and you don’t need to be a shareholder to suggest things where you think that we can make a difference. Either speak to any member of the Management Committee, make contact via the website, or email us. Once we are able to meet up again, we will be looking at new ways in which we can get involved to help our community.

Most of you may know that, as a result of COVID-19, The White Horse had to temporarily close its doors to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of its colleagues and customers, and we are now delighted to share the news that TWH are back up and running for a full take away service. As from Friday 1st May, the pub is open again for “take away” on Friday and Saturday evenings, afternoon tea on Saturdays, plus Sunday roast menu throughout Sunday. Prior to the closure, the take away service proved to be very successful, and we hope you will continue to support this.

Together we will get through this, and when we are all able to meet up again, there will be much celebrating as we recognise what a great community we all live in. For now though, we must all stay at home and keep safe, and hopefully by the time the next edition of Fenton in Focus is published we will have lots more exciting news to share with you. In the meantime, please get in touch with your project ideas.

Supporting Church Fenton Through the Crisis Thanks to herculean efforts by a small army of volunteers, the shop has been able to remain at the heart of the village, supporting our community and helping to keep spirits up! Special thanks to all those new volunteers who answered the call, got thrown in at the deep end, coped beautifully and came up smiling…you’ve all been stars.

Everyone involved with the shop, both new and old, have been proud to serve their community and are grateful for the support of our lovely customers who have made it all worthwhile, and have complied with all the restrictions with understanding and good humour.

Well done Church Fenton Together we are Strong!!

Church Fenton High Flyers WI, looks forward to the end of social distancing and a chance to meet back together again. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 we were unable to hold our Spring Fayre this year, fingers crossed, we are planning to hold one next year.

As we write this we do not know when the social distancing will end, but we are preparing for the Village Produce Show, Sunday 6th September. This may be an ideal time to grow something and enter the show, we have heard many villagers are going to be reusing the old recycling boxes as planters so you don’t need a huge garden to be able to grow something.

We meet at 7.30pm on the 4th Thursday of every month (except where noted on the programme) at the village Hall. As soon as we can recommence our programme, we will let everyone know, look out for posters and Facebook announcements as well as an update on our page on the Church Fenton website, www.church-fenton.net

We hope to see you at any of our meetings, but you would be especially at our first meeting back from social distancing and not seeing each other for many months, we think a social gathering for all with some wine, snacks and the chance to meet and chat to new people will be a fabulous evening.

We hope to see you at one of our events and if you would like any further details or have any questions, please contact the secretary: Samantha Charlston. Tel: 07801965268 or [email protected]

This is what we hope the rest of the year will look like, but please look out for updates.
