Summer reading ideas for students entering Fifth Grade • Read at least four complete chapter books appropriate to reading skill. • Note the books on your reading log. • Books need not be on this list. • Fifth grade students will have the opportunity to join the middle school for a Skype session with author Gordon Korman and an in-person visit by Margaret Peterson Haddix. We encourage you to read something by either or both of those authors. See the suggestions below. Stop here for some favorite Korman and Haddix choices: • Slacker by Gordon Korman. Hot off of the presses, this novel looks to be a winner! Cameron is very into gaming—so much so that he doesn’t notice when his kitchen catches fire. As a result, Cameron loses his gaming privileges and needs to start a “new” activity. His new activity is a school club to do good deeds. Really it’s a front for him to continue to game. What will happen when other kids try to join, wanting to do good deeds? Get ready to laugh! • Other great titles by Gordon Korman: No More Dead Dogs, Swindle (series) and the On the Run series. • Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix. In a world where the government has enforced a two child per family rule, third children must be kept hidden in order to survive. Luke is one of those hidden children. What will happen when Luke sees a face, a child’s face, in a window in his neighborhood? Has he stumbled upon another hidden child? This is the first book of the Shadow Children series. • Other titles by Margaret Peterson Haddix: Say What?, the Missing series, and Just Ella. How about some realistic fiction? Try these: • Fenway Fever by John Ritter. Could the famous curse be back on the Boston Red Sox? Billee Orbit, the (fictional) star pitcher for the Boston Red Sox thinks so. Billee gets together with his friend and fan, 12 year old Stats Pagano, to try to undo the curse. Stats has his own problems, too—will his family lose their hotdog stand to pay old medical bills? • Fish in a tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. Reading has always been practically impossible for Ally and she gets into trouble to deflect attention from her reading (or lack of reading.) What happens when one teacher figures it out? Will Ally take a risk and accept his help? Are you a mystery fan? Try one of these: • The Book Scavenger by Jennifer Bertram. Fans of puzzles and ciphers will love this title! When Emily is looking for a book as part of the Book Scavenger game, she mistakenly finds a much more valuable book. Will she puzzle it out before the bad guys find her? • The Tell-tale Start by Gordon McAlpine. Edgar and Allan Poe are identical twins who are descendants of the famous author Edgar Allan Poe. They are brilliant, are great at getting into trouble and seem to be able to read each other’s minds. When their beloved cat is kidnapped, they must convince their aunt and uncle to go on a road trip to bring him back. This is the first book of the Misadventures of Edgar and Allan Poe series. • Eddie Red, Undercover: Mystery on Museum Mile by Marcia Wells. When Edmund Lonnrot witnesses a crime and produces a perfect sketch of the bad guy for the police, Eddie Red is born. The police want Edmund (code name Eddie Red) to use his photographic memory and artistic skills to help them on a regular basis. It sounds like fun but the real world of crime can be dangerous—can Eddie handle it? Feel like some fantasy? • Story Thieves by James Riley. Would you like to be able to jump into your favorite book? When Owen realizes that fellow classmate Bethany has been jumping into books, he sees the potential for lots of fun and fame. While Owen promises to help Bethany find her missing fictional dad, he also wants to change a favorite story. Will Owen realize how dangerous that might be? • Menagerie by Tui Sutherland and Kari Sutherland. Do you like griffins, unicorns and phoenixes? If so, grab this title! Half fantasy, half mystery, join Logan and Zoe as they try to find six escaped griffins before it’s too late. Who let them out and why? • The Candy Shop War by Brandon Mull. This novel is so full of action! Several friends visit a new candy shop in town. When the owner gives them candy that bestows them with special abilities, they are happy to do a few “jobs” for her. As the jobs become more and more dangerous, the kids wonder what they have gotten themselves into. Will they be able to figure out who they can really trust? • The wild robot by Peter Brown. After a storm causes a ship to sink, all the robots on board are destroyed, except for one. Roz, as she is called, washes up on an island only inhabited by animals. At first, the animals fear her but eventually they see Roz as helpful. Their peaceful existence will be threatened by Roz’s past—what does Roz’s future hold? Peter Brown is a great illustrator as well and his wonderful illustrations are sprinkled throughout. ! ! !
