Purchasing Priority List What Series Do We Have? These are the series that we have in the Middle School Lounge. This list also identifies which books are in the Elizabeth Library and Griffith Library to make it easier to send students. Here is how that information is displayed on the boxes for the books (link). ​ ​ Right now, the series in the MS Lounge are mainly Mystery, Horror, and Fantasy. What Should We Buy? Often, we have one or more books but not the whole series. I have made this list to help figure out (when it’s that time of year for purchasing novels) which ones we might want to order / find at a bookstore to complete a given series and get the most bang for our buck. What Should We Buy in the Future? We haven’t started to tackle the Realistic Fiction, Historical Fiction, Non-Fiction, or Graphic Novel series in the same way. That would be a good next step for the future. What Do You Need to Know? 1. This spy series #1 Stormbreaker ^** seems to be a good fit for #2 Point Blanc ^** students who are looking for #3 Skeleton Key ^** action, adventure, and #4 Eagle Strike ^*** gadgets. The Elizabeth is #5 Scorpia ^*** also well stocked #6 Ark Angel ^*** #7 Snakehead ^ #8 Crocodile Tears ** #9 Scorpia Rising #10 Russian Roulette Daniel X James Patterson Low Priority - I think that this #1 The Dangerous Days of Daniel X is a finished series, but we #2 Watch the Skies need to double check. #3 Demons and Druids Some of the copies were old #4 Game-Over and in bad shape, so they #5 Armageddon might be in the Free Library #6 Lights Out Box instead of in the MS Lounge.. Harris High Priority - We are close #1 Invisible City * to completing this series. ​ #2 Ice Shock Just the first one! #3 Zero Moment #4 Dark Parallel #5 Apocalypse Moon Lemony Snicket Daniel Handler Low Priority - This is a big #1 The Bad Beginning ^* series with a lot of titles, but #2 The Reptile Room ^* it was all the rage at one ​ #3 The Wide Window ^** point, and with a new ​ #4 The Miserable Mill * big-budget Netflix series ​ #5 The Austere Academy * coming out soon, it would ​ #6 The Ersatz Elevator ** be great to have the full set. ​ #7 The Vile Village ** Still, it would be a lot to ​ #8 The Hostile Hospital ** order, so I am marking it a ​ #9 The Carnivorous Carnival ^* low priority. ​ #10 The Slippery Slope ^* ​ #11 The Grim Grotto ** ​ #12 The Penultimate Peril ** ​ #13 The End ** ​ Lemony Snicket: All The Wrong Questions Low Priority - We have the #1 Who Could That Be at This Hour? first book of this additional #2 When Did You See Her Last? series, so it would be much #3 Shouldn’t You Be In School? ^ easier to complete this ​ #4 Why Is This Night Different from All Others? series than the original. Maximum Ride James Patterson Medium Priority - I am not #1 The Angel Experiment sure which of these are in #2 School’s Out Forever the MS Lounge and which #3 Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports of these are in the Free #4 The Final Warning Library Box. They were #5 Max older copies. I THINK we #6 Fang books 1 through 6 of this #7 Angel series. If that’s true, then we #8 Nevermore have enough of the series. #9 Maximum Ride Forever We should double check though, because we might be missing some of them. Poison Apple Various Authors Low Priority - We are #1 The Dead End missing only one book! #2 This Totally Bites! However, since it is the last, #3 Miss Fortune there is no need to rush in #4 Now You See Me getting it. This is a big #5 Midnight Howl series, and it seems #6 Her Evil Twin targeted for younger girls. I #7 Curiosity Killed the Cat question whether it should #8 At First Bite be classified as Fantasy or #9 The Ghoul Next Door Horror, but it is getting read #10 The Ghost of Christmas Past often by students under #11 The Green-Eyed Monster Mystery, so I think it’s a #12 Dead in the Water good fit. ​ Robert Langdon Dan Brown Low Priority - I think that #1 Angels & Demons each book can stand on its own, and since The Da #2 The Da Vinci Code ​ Vinci Code and Inferno can #3 The Lost Symbol ​ ​ ​ #4 Inferno stand on their own, but that #5 Origin is my guess. I have also never physically seen these, so I don’t know if we truly have them. The Roman Mysteries Caroline Lawrence Low Priority - We have two #1 The Thieves of Ostia * titles but both are class sets #2 The Secrets of Vesuvius * (nearly 75 books all ​ #3 The Pirates of Pompeii * together), so someone ​ #4 The Assassins of Rome * thought highly of the series ​ #5 The Dolphins of Laurentum * and wanted to invest in it. I ​ #6 The Twelve Tasks of Flavia Gemina * don’t think the series has to ​ #7 The Enemies of Jupiter * be read in order, so it would ​ #8 The Gladiators from Capua * be nice to pick and choose ​ ​ #9 The Colossus of Rhodes * only a few titles that fit ​ #10 The Fugitive from Corinth * nicely within the curriculum ​ #11 The Sirens of Surrentum * for MS Social Studies but ​ #12 The Charioteer of Delphi * not worry about completing ​ #13 The Slave-girl from Jerusalem the series. Also, I am not #14 The Beggar of Volubilis * sure if this should be ​ #15 The Scribes from Alexandria* considered Mystery or #16 The Prophet from Ephesus * Historical Fiction. ​ #17 The Man from Pomegranate Street Secret Series Pseudonymous Bosch Finished! It would be nice to #1 The Name of this Book is Secret order a few more of the first #2 If You’re Reading This, It’s Too Late book though. Students are #3 This Book is Not Good for You interested but not able to #4 This Isn’t What It Looks Like begin. #5 You Have to Stop This Ulysses Moore Ulysses Moore Low Priority - This is a #1 The Door to Time longer series, but it looks #2 The Long Lost Map like only the first four books #3 The House of Mirrors are in English. Since we #4 The Isle of Masks have the first two, it might be nice to do all four. I #2 Demon Thief would like to fill the gaps in #3 Slawter the series. #4 Dec #5 Blood Beast #6 Demon Apocalypse #7 Death’s Shadow #8 Wolf Island #9 Dark Calling #10 Hell’s Heroes Department of Unclassified Artefacts Justin Richards Low Priority - This does #1 The Death Collector well in the “Starter Pack” #2 The Parliament of Blood but is an achievable series since there are only three #3 The Chamber of Shadows books. The Demon’s Lexicon Sarah Rees Brennan Medium Priority - We have #1 The Demon’s Lexicon the second of this series #2 The Demon’s Covenant but not the first. This fits in the “Starter Pack” but not #3 The Demon’s Surrender well. We should get the first. Goosebumps R.L. Stine Low Priority - There are 49 #5 The Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb copies in the Griffith, so I #60 Werewolf Skin think it’s better to direct the All the others.

    Book Seven: The Viper’s Nest By Peter Lerangis Historical Figures: Winston Churchill, Shaka Zulu Locations: Johannesburg, Pretoria, Madagascar Foreshadowing and Flashback Two literary elements that can be as elusive as a Madrigal are foreshadowing and flashback. While foreshadowing is used by the author to provide a hint to the reader about something that might happen later in the plot, flashback interrupts the plot by telling an event that happened before the time of the story. Both literary elements provide plot clues without giving away the ending. They help build interest and suspense as the reader speculates how the clue will affect the ending. Detecting Foreshadowing and Flashback Flashback to the Future Students will stay in front of the competition in the hunt for The 39 Create a memory book of Arthur and Hope based upon Amy’s Clues by becoming experts in detecting the use of foreshadowing and flashbacks. Gather pictures of the places they visited. Create flashbacks. InThe Viper’s Nest, Grace, Arthur, and Hope come alive to photographs or draw what they might look like based upon their the reader through the author’s use of flashbacks. Flashbacks are easy characterizations. Put the artifacts of their adventures together to spot because the text often reverts to past tense.     David Baldacci on Author Roster for Second ‘39 Clues’ Wave By Sally Lodge – 9/22/2010 The powerful Cahill family will be pitted against a ruthless cabal in Scholastic’s follow-up to its multimedia franchise, The 39 Clues. The new series, The 39 Clues: Cahills vs. Vespers, launches in April 2011 with Vespers Rising by Rick Riordan, Peter Lerangis, Gordon Korman, and Jude Watson, and will wrap up in March 2013 with a seventh installment penned by bestselling thriller author David Baldacci. Vespers Rising has an announced first printing of 500,000 copies. Continuing the multi-platform concept, the second part of the series will entail collectible cards and an online game and will include enhanced interactive features on the series’ Web site. The 39 Clues model has obviously clicked with young readers: there are more than 8.5 million copies of the original 10-book series in print, the series has been licensed for publication in 24 languages, and the Web site has more than 1.2 million registered users to date. Asked about the incentive for creating part deux, David Levithan, v-p and editorial director of Scholastic Press and multi-media publishing, has a simple answer: “The kids wanted it.” He notes that the 10th book, Margaret Peterson Haddix’s Into the Gauntlet, which pubbed in August, “was our best launch yet. And when that book came out, the first installment, The Maze of Bones by Rick Riordan, was still among the top 10 titles on BookScan’s children’s list. The 39 Clues has engaged both readers and gamers and has created a world that kids don’t want to leave and that new kids are discovering all the time.” Rachel Griffiths, senior editor of Scholastic Press and editor of The 39 Clues, says that the 2.0 version immerses readers into the series’ action more extensively than before.
