This system operated until the reorganisation of the National Health Service in 1974. The Edinburgh Southern Hospital Group formed part of the South Eastern Regional Hospital Board and consisted of the undernoted hospitals. Reference numbers in brackets refer to pre 1948 records of these hospitals Bruntsfield Hospital (LHB8) Deaconess Hospital (LHB12) Elsie Inglis Hospital (LHB8) Liberton Hospital Longmore Hospital From 1974 to 1984 these hospitals formed part of the South Lothian District of Lothian Health Board (see LHB28). Scottish Women's Hospital
Scottish Women's Hospital Scottish Women's Hospitals (SWH) was founded in 1914 with the financial support of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies and the American Red Cross. When war broke out in 1914 SWH founder, Dr Elsie Maud Inglis, approached the War Office with the idea of either women-doctors co-operating with the Royal Army Medical Corps, or women's medical units being allowed to serve on the Western Front. The authorities were less than helpful and it is reported that an official said to her "My good lady, go home and sit still". Undeterred, Scottish Women's Hospitals opened its first 200 bed Auxillary hospital at the 13th century Abbaye de Royaumont, France, under the French Red Cross. Elsie Inglis, Ishbel Ross and Cicely Hamilton were among the team at Royaumont. Throughout the First World War Scottish Women's Hospitals arranged 14 medical units to serve in Corsica, France, Malta, Romania, Russia, Salonika and Serbia. They provided nurses, doctors, ambulance drivers, cooks and orderlies. During 1915 several women were captured by the Austro-German army while running a series of field hospitals, dressing stations, fever hospitals and clinics in Serbia on the Balkan Front. Amongst those captured was founder and unit leader Dr Inglis. Aided by American diplomats, the British authorities were eventually able to secure their release. In August 1916 the London Suffrage Society financed a group of 80 women to support Serbian soldiers fighting in Russia. Another leader in the suffrage movement, Evelina Haverfield, was recruited as head of transport. A Serbian official who saw the work of the women in Russia said "No wonder Britain is a great country if the women are like that".

Kaye Almond Ratho Station Edinburgh District Board of Control commissioned Stewart Kaye, the Yes and Newbridge architect of Bangour Village Asylum, to design a colony for Gogarburn to accommodate, ultimately 1,000 mentally handicapped people. The colony was designed as a small village, each house or block to take 50 patients under the supervision of a housekeeper. In 1929 the foundation stone of the new admin block was laid by the Duke of York, later George VI.

Notes The southern side of Edinburgh has housed many historical hospitals, including: Astley Ainslie Hospital; Bruntsfield Hospital, Whitehouse Loan; Chalmers Hospital, Lauriston Place; Craighouse: a former private asylum; Edinburgh Dental Hospital; Elsie Inglis Memorial Hospital, Abbeyhill; Royal Edinburgh Hospital for Incurables, Salisbury Place; Old Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Infirmary Street; Princess Margaret Rose Orthopaedic Hospital; Royal Edinburgh (Psychiatric) Hospital, Tipperlinn Road; Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Sciennes Road; Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Lauriston Place now superseded by new Royal Infirmary at Little France; Scottish National Neurasthenic Hospital, Craigend Park, Liberton; St Raphael’s Hospital, Blackford Avenue; Thomas Clouston clinic, Craighouse; Woodburn Sanatorium, Canaan Lane. This walk visits three other former hospitals: CRAIGLOCKHART HOSPITAL (Edinburgh Hydropathic) built in 1877-9; the CITY HOSPITAL FOR INFECTIOUS DISEASES, built between 1897 and 1903; and the CRAIGLOCKHART POORHOUSE, built in 1867‑1869. The Craiglockhart War Hospital for Officers with Nervous Diseases or ‘Dottyville’ was open only for 28 months, but became perhaps the world’s most famous shell-shock hospital. It was set up to deal with the huge increase in psychological casualties of the First World War (over 40% of all casualties), most note worthily following the battle of the Somme in 1916. The hospital's fame, in part, arose through two of the finest poets of the war —Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon—who were both treated there. Its achievements in cognitive therapy were much more than the oft-repeated idea of a subtle reprogramming that took the form of friendly chats between officer-class patients and avuncular doctors over tea and scones.

During her career she also instigated many projects in the service of elderly people, especially through the Edinburgh & Leith Old People’s Welfare Council for which she was awarded an MBE in 1964. She had a lifelong interest in the medical profession, mounting a successful campaign in 1957 to ensure that the Bruntsfield Hospital for Women and the Elsie Inglis Memorial Maternity Hospital employed only qualified female medical staff. She was treasurer of both hospitals when they were handed to the NHS in 1947 and also maintained roles in other medical organisations such as the South Eastern Association of the Medical Women’s Federation of which she was appointed Honorary Auditor in 1978. A second campaign to save the hospitals from closure in the 1980s was unsuccessful. THE SCOTTISH SOCIETY OF THE HISTORY OF MEDICINE REPORT OF PROCEEDINGS Session 1981-82 THE Society had a successful session with membership continuing to maintain its upward trend. There were three meetings and attendances were most encouraging, all the papers arousing keen interest and discussion. THE THIRTY-THIRD ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING AND HUNDREDTH ORDINARY MEETING The Thirty-Third Annual General Meeting was held in the Elsie Inglis Memorial Maternity Hospital, Edinburgh, on 28 November 1981. The One Hundredth Ordinary Meeting followed immediately, and the place of meeting was most appropriate in that the Hospital is a memorial to a distinguished Scottish woman doctor who did so much for the medical education of women and helped in the foundation of a women's hospital in Edinburgh. In her paper tracing the evolution of the four women's hospitals in Scotland until their absorption into the National Health Service in 1948, Dr Margaret Menzies Campbell stressed that it was less than one hundred years since the Scottish universities opened their doors to women. She referred to the valuable part played by these hospitals founded for women and staffed by women doctors. She herself had had the unique experience of having been closely connected with all four of them. The following is a synopsis of her paper, entitled: FOUR SCOTTISH WOMEN'S HOSPITALS FROM THEIR FOUNDATIONS TO 1948 When that doughty champion of the medical education of women in Britain, Dr Sophia Jex-Blake (1840-1912), commenced practice in the west end of Edinburgh in 1878, she became the first woman general medical practitioner in Scotland.
