Adolescent years can be very challenging and confusing. Many teens may face peer pressure with drugs and alcohol use. These type of issues can be very stressful to deal with for both high school students and their parents. Many parents never anticipate having to deal with drugs or alcohol and when it happens they are unsure of how to react. If your child came home and was drunk or high, what would you do? The Partnership for a Drug-Free America has lots of resources for you and a special focus on that situation and others, answering the following questions:

• What is a drug or alcohol Intervention? • How do I know for sure if my teen is using? • How should I prepare for a talk with my child? • How do I make sure the talk is productive? • What if my child needs outside help?

Intervention eBook is a great tool to refer to when facing these types of situations. Go to this website for advice on how to react if your kid falls into peer pressure: http://www.drugfreeazkids.org/sites/default/files/Intervention_Guide_3.pdf . We hope @SouthWarrenHigh you never have to find yourself in this situation, but our motto is to always be prepared as parents. SNOW ALERT - Inclement Weather Plan

To Close or Not to Close ----- That is the Question Any Superintendent or Transportation Director will tell you that one of the most difficult decisions to make is whether to close, delay, or open school on days of inclement weather. This is a challenge because it is based upon the probability of students and staff traveling safely to our schools. The process begins at 4:00 a.m., with district personnel and weather spotters strategically placed throughout the county, and monitoring road conditions. During this time, district officials are in consistent contact with Bowling Green officials, law enforcement agencies, and the news media for the latest update on weather forecasts. The goal is to make a decision no later than 5:30 a.m., in order to inform our district parents, students, and employees in a timely manner. Because this decision is made early in the morning, there may be a need for a revision later, if there are rapidly changing weather conditions. It is important for parents to continue checking television and radio stations after the initial announcement, in the event weather conditions dictate a change. Although we realize these decisions are subject to second-guessing, I ask that you remember all decisions are based solely upon the safety of our children, and we will always err on the side of caution.

WHAT FACTORS GO INTO MAKING THE DECISION TO CLOSE, DELAY or DISMISS EARLY? • Weather forecasts from radio and television stations (the time snow/ice or freezing rain is expected to start and end) • Predicted amount of snow/ice accumulation • Weather conditions expected after the snow/ice • Assessments of road conditions by school officials, Department of Transportation, and various law enforcement agencies • Assessment of school parking lots and accessibility to each building • Anticipated impact on traffic

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE WEATHER BECOMES SEVERE DURING THE SCHOOL DAY? Every effort is made to keep students in school through regular dismissal; however, it may become necessary to dismiss students earlier than normal to ensure their safe transport. School officials monitor weather conditions throughout the day in consultation with local weather officials, the Kentucky Department of Transportation, and various law enforcement officials.

HOW CAN PARENTS BE READY? Parents should always be prepared for an early dismissal by having an identified procedure for their child to follow in these situations. We request parents not drive to school to pick up children who normally ride the school bus in the afternoon. This additional traffic created at school may complicate an early dismissal by increasing traffic both at the school and on the local roads. In addition, it may hamper communication efforts by school employees who are working quickly to ensure each child has a safe transport home.

EMERGENCY CLOSING/DELAY INFORMATION SOURCES: • WBKO-TV (13) WTVF-TV (5) WKRN-TV (2) • WBGN-RADIO • WBVR-RADIO WCLU-RADIO WCVK-RADIO • WGGC-RADIO WKCT-RADIO WKLX-RADIO • WKYU-RADIO WPTQ-RADIO WSM-RADIO • WCPS Alert Now Messaging System

We ask that parents and students do not telephone the schools or the district office for information pertaining to the operation of schools on days of inclement weather. Due to limited staffing in our offices, these calls may delay our ability to notify school staff and the public of important decisions in a timely manner. An announcement of school closing and/or a delay will be made on most of the local television and radio stations as soon as possible. You will receive this information via Twitter at @WarrenCoschools, @robclayton10, and through our Alert Now email and phone call services. I trust this communication provides you with relevant information, and allows you to better understand our process to ensure your child’s safety during inclement weather. Please share your questions with your child’s principal or feel free to contact the Warren County Schools Transportation Department at 842-8311. Thank you for entrusting us with the safety of your child each day. Take care!

Rob Clayton, Superintendent

§ Every summer, our faculty of professional artists and educators guide over two hundred of Kentucky’s finest young artists through three weeks of incredibly intense (and incredibly fun) arts instruction. This year will be the third year on the Centre College Campus in Danville. For three solid weeks, the students live, breathe, eat and sleep the arts. It’s a thrilling, often life-changing experience, as they meet new friends, explore their creativity, and discover new things about who they are and who they can be in the future.

§ GSA auditions the Commonwealth’s most promising high school sophomores and juniors in nine different arts disciplines: Architecture + Design, Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Film + Photography Instrumental Music, Musical Theatre, Visual Art and Vocal Music. GSA 2016 will take place from June 18 – July 8.

§ GSA is an arts education program of The Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts. GSA is offered at no cost to the student, and is made available through funding from the state, as well as private fundraising. The value of GSA is $3,800 per student.

§ GSA has served all 120 counties in the Commonwealth through the summer program and its outreach workshops. GSA is a statewide program and encourages geographical and ethnic diversity. However, GSA does not establish quotas.

§ GSA does not discriminate or give advantages to anyone. This includes preference based on region or county, urban or rural, experience, training, high school vs. home school, instrument, voice type, body type, etc.

§ Potential and attitude are as important in the GSA audition/review process as is talent. The most talented student will not succeed at GSA if they are not interested in becoming better than they already are. GSA is not just an award – it is an opportunity to learn and grow. GSA adjudicators look at these young artists holistically, not just their product/performance.

Application Process

Eligibility/How to Apply In order to be considered for the 2017 Governor’s School for the Arts, students must meet the following selection criteria: • Be a resident of Kentucky and currently be a sophomore or junior in a Kentucky high school or home school. • Complete the application by January 15, 2017. GSA will not consider incomplete applications. There is a fee for applying: $30 one art form/$35 two art forms. Students that receive free and reduced lunch have the option to waive the fee. • Adjudicators will select finalists and GSA will post results online on February 28. • Finalist must attend a second round, live audition/review at Centre College (Danville, KY) on March 24-25. • Accepted and Alternate students will be chosen from this second round live audition/review.
