Major Oil Refineries of the Country Introduction Recently, the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi has inaugurated a petroleum refinery in Barmer, Rajasthan. India is one of the most advanced petroleum refining country in the world and a major exporter of refined petroleum products in the world. India has some 23 major petroleum refineries spread across the length and breadth of the country. About Barmer Barmer is a district of Rajasthan state located in the Western Rajasthan. It is the third largest district of Rajasthan and fifth largest district of the country. It also forms part of the marusthali – Thar Desert. It is a border district sharing its border with Pakistan. About the Barmer Refinery • The Barmer Refinery will be placed under the aegis of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited or HPCL. • It is a joint venture between Rajasthan Government and HPCL. • HPCL has majority stake of 74% whereas Rajasthan government has minority stake of 26%. • It has been the largest investment in the state till date. • It will make use of the oil and petroleum crude emerging out of Barmer Basin found in the state of Rajasthan which is an extension of Gujarat Basin. About refineries in the country: • There are some 23 major petroleum refineries spread across the country. • Majority of them are in the public sector and mostly owned by the Indian Oil Corporation Limited. • Petroleum Products form the second most exported item from the country. • The top 5 exporting destinations from India include UAE, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Brazil and Kenya. Some Important Refineries of the Country: 1. Guwahati Refinery a. Located in Assam. b. Established in 1962 as first public-sector oil refinery. c. Under the aegis of Indian Oil Corporation Limited. d. Set up using assistance from Romania. 2. Barauni Refinery a. Located in Bihar. b. Established under the aegis of Indian Oil Corporation Limited. c. It was established in 1964 and built with help from Soviet Union. 3. Koyali Refinery a. Located in Gujarat. b. It operates under the aegis of Indian Oil Corporation Limited. c. The refinery was set up 1965 with collaboration from Soviet Union. d. The refinery process the crude that is generated from oil fields like Kalol, Ankleshwar and Nawagaon. 4. Haldia Refinery a. Located in West Bengal. b. It also operates under the aegis of Indian Oil Corporation Limited. c. It was set up in 1975 and consists of two sectors: i. Fuel sector for products like diesel and petrol. ii. Lube sector for products like grease and engine oils. d. Fuel sector was set up with assistance from France. e. Lube sector was set up with assistance from Romania. 5. Mathura Oil Refinery a. Located in Western Uttar Pradesh. b. It operates under the aegis of Indian Oil Corporation Limited. c. It was set up in 1982, it is famous for manufacturing of high speed diesel. 6. Digboi Oil Refinery a. It is located in Tinsukia district of Assam, close to Arunachal Pradesh Border. b. It is operating under the aegis of Indian Oil Corporation Limited. c. It was set up in 1901 by the Assam Oil Company and later taken over by Indian Oil Corporation Limited in 1981. 7. Mumbai Oil Refinery a. Established in 1954, it operates in Maharashtra. b. It operates under the aegis of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited. c. It largely processes the crude oil that is obtained from Bombay High in Arabian Sea. 8. Jamnagar Refinery (Not included in Video but important): a. It is world’s largest oil refinery. b. It is located in the state of Gujarat and operated by Reliance Industries. c. It is a private sector refinery. Similarly, there are also other major refineries located in Kochi and Bathinda which might be looked up on the Wikipedia for some small relevant information. .
