IT'S THE LIFE OF A TIBE… MARVIN ALONE; FOR 6 WEEKS, HE'S IMPRISONED HIMSELF ON THE CAPE, DOING WHAT A BOXER; MUST DO. IT'S THE LIFE OF A TIBETAN MONK. [FIRST Edition] Boston Globe (pre-1997 Fulltext) - Boston, Mass. Author: Steve Marantz Globe Staff Date: Jan 11, 1981 Start Page: 1 Section: SPORTS Document Text "It's lonely," said Marvin Hagler, the hooded ascetic, walking the shadowy, unheated corridors of a summer resort in winter, running frozen streets that crunch at dawn, chatting politely with the seagulls who listen. The only noise is the incessant wind and rattle of the windows. The play of shadows across a gray seascape is solemn and beautiful. It's lonely. "The point of the training camp," said Hagler, "is to get away. It's like putting yourself in jail. It's not a question of liking it. It's a question of having to do it." So, for the past six weeks, Hagler has imprisoned himself at the Provincetown Inn, doing what a boxer must do. It's a life fit for a Tibetan monk. No family, friends, parties, restaurants, dancing. No sex. No pastries. Lots of situps. Training camps are Spartan by definition. Hagler takes his a step farther. It is more isolated, more desolate, more single-minded than most. Four sparring partners have packed up and returned to civilization, unnerved. The fifth and sixth are sticking it out.

  • Sporting Legends: Marvin Hagler
SPORTING LEGENDS: MARVIN HAGLER SPORT: BOXING COMPETITIVE ERA: 1973 - 1987 Marvelous Marvin Hagler (born Marvin Nathaniel Hagler in Newark, New Jersey May 23, 1954), a native of Brockton, Massachusetts, was one of the most successful Middleweight Boxing Champions of all-time. Total fights 67 Wins 62 Wins By KO 52 Losses 3 Draws 2 Hagler started his professional boxing career in 1973, and soon began working his way up through the Middleweight rankings. He often had to travel to his opponents' hometowns to get fights, often boxing against the best that the city of Philadelphia had to offer (and beating them). Hagler took on all challengers, and by 1976 had chalked up a 26-0 record. However, during the same year he lost controversial decisions to Willie Monroe and Bobby 'Boogaloo' Watts, and had to suffer while watching less-deserving challengers receive title shots against Carlos Monzon and Hugo Corro. This served for Hagler to build upon a character that was as tough as steel, but with a soft spot in his heart toward his fans. Hagler soon avenged his 2 defeats by knocking out Monroe and Watts in rematches, and won a 10-round decision over Bennie Briscoe in a 1978 classic Philadelphia confrontation. By this time, he had made fans in both Massachusetts and Philadelphia, two of boxing’s legendary hot-beds. By then, promoter Bob Arum, a lawyer who had helped in the White House during President John F. Kennedy's tenure, took notice and signed him. Arum raised Hagler’s public profile and finally, in November 1979, Hagler was in the ring with a world Middleweight champion.

  • Manager John Seip Signs Italian Super Middleweight Prospect Daniele Marco Scardina
Manager John Seip signs Italian super middleweight prospect Daniele Marco Scardina MIAMI (April 6, 2015) – Veteran boxing manager John Seip has signed highly decorated Italian amateur boxer Daniele Marco Scardina to an exclusive managerial contract. Seip is best known for guiding Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin to the World Boxing Organization (WBO) world middleweight title. The native New Yorker also manages rising British super middleweight Steed “The Stallion” Woodall (7-0-1, 5 KOs). The 21-year-old Scardina hails from Rozzano, a town of less than 40,000 people in the Province of Milan. He started boxing in 2008 at the age of 16, following in his uncle’s footsteps who was a boxer at that time, as well as Daniele’s role model. Scardina, who had 56 amateur bouts, captured top honors in numerous Italian tournaments including the Rovereto National, National Silver Glove, and two National Golden Gloves. He also won a bronze medal at an International event. In 2013, he boxed for the Italia Thunder Boxing Team in the World Series of Boxing, winning his only match against a German opponent. Scardina first caught Seip’s attention at the world famous 5th St. Gym in Miami Beach, originally opened in 1950 by Chris Dundee, and the home of countless world champions have trained there including Muhammad Ali, Carmen Basilio, Willie Pastrano, Emile Griffith, Archie Moore, Roberto Duran, Sonny Liston, and Willie Pep. The rich tradition continues at the new 5th St. Gym, located nearby at 1434 Alton Street, where top fighters from around the world such as Bernard Hopkins still train.
