Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

Today’s guest, producer extraordinaire Dave Cobb. DAVE COBB When we approach these records we approach it much the way a record would’ve been done in 1965, 1970. And it’s humans playing together. There are mistakes all over the record. There’s timing issues, there’s tuning issues, there’s pitch issues, there’s flubs of words. The same way people are seeking out organically grown food, I think people are seeking out organically grown music at the same time. The moment I heard Chris Stapleton I was like, “Man I’ve got to track him down.” If I can just get to Nashville I’d run into him and I’d run into Jason Isbell and try to sucker them in to make records. I like to fly by the seat of my pants. Walk in and see what’s going to grab you that day. To me it was a really cool thing about linking really great artists that I like now, and linking Nashville, what Nashville is today. Taking kind of a snapshot of it. And I love it when I get to introduce somebody to somebody else I think is talented. And you see there eyes both sparkle. And I love the unity in the scene. That’s why I moved here.     Austin Lucas Biography April 2016 When Austin Lucas began thinking about the follow-up to his critically acclaimed 2013 album, Stay Reckless, he had a lot on his mind. The Indiana troubadour wanted to do something not only different from his own previous work, but unlike anything else happening in the realm of country and Americana. Between The Moon And The Midwest marries traditional and cosmic country sounds with sharp, vivid storytelling in a fully realized concept album. "The songs for the new record began to emerge back in 2011 leading up to the sessions for Stay Reckless," Lucas says. "It was a tumultuous time in my life. I was on the road virtually nonstop, and my marriage was falling apart. To cope with everything, I started pouring all the pain I was experiencing into these fictionalized characters. Really, I was trying to avoid reflecting on the state of my personal life." Two years later, Lucas was deeper into the void, battling crippling bouts of anxiety and depression. Out of desperation, he returned to the old character-driven songs he'd written and shelved, this time with an even darker perspective. Drawing on his life experiences in rural Indiana, Lucas began crafting an intimate song cycle that captured the intricacies of friendship, love and betrayal. “Writing these songs was therapy through escapism,” Lucas says. “By using characters, I accidentally created an environment where I could speak openly—oftentimes about things that were buried more deeply than I’d normally express. For example, the spiraling depression that cast a shadow over the final months of writing and recording the album.

    social sciences $€ £ ¥ Article “Boys ‘Round Here”: Masculine Life-Course Narratives in Contemporary Country Music Cenate Pruitt Department of Sociology & Human Services, University of North Georgia, Gainesville, GA 30566, USA; [email protected] Received: 6 May 2019; Accepted: 4 June 2019; Published: 7 June 2019 Abstract: Country music remains one of the most popular genres in U.S. American society but is historically under-researched compared to rock, rap and other styles. This article extends the social science literature on the genre by examining themes of masculine identity in popular country hits of the current century. A content analysis of 35 top country hits from the last 15 years of the Billboard charts reveals three key masculine archetypes: the lover, the family man and particularly the country boy, which is the dominant masculine image within the last few years of the genre. Together, the three create a life-course narrative where the rambunctious country boy will eventually settle into monogamous heterosexual romance, with marriage and fatherhood presented as the ultimate achievement of successful manhood. A fourth, lesser, archetype, the roughneck, presents an “arrested development” version of the country boy, fully-grown but rejecting the social and familial responsibilities of the other archetypes. These narratives simultaneously challenge some aspects of hegemonic masculinity (urbanity, white-collar labor) while reinforcing others (whiteness, heterosexuality). In a city where country is kind, Sweany brings an invigorating blend of roots, blues and Motown soul to his music. His style incorporates a natural aesthetic that shows his heart as a distinct part of everything he does with a guitar. His voice has a rustic quality and a no-nonsense approach. On November 4, he’ll be performing on the upstairs stage of the Columbus Theatre in Providence’s West End with Boston blues dynamo Julie Rhodes. Before the festivities Sweany and I had a chat about his beginnings in Kent, Ohio, what made him move to Nashville, his time from working with The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, last year’s release Daytime Turned To Nighttime, his opinions on the Nashville scene and what his plans are for the holidays. Rob Duguay: You started your musical career playing around Kent, Ohio, and now you’re based in Nashville. How did you end up in Nashville? Was it always a goal of yours to move there or did it just happen by chance? Patrick Sweany: It had been on my mind to move to Nashville for a while due to it being a big place for the music business along with the epicenter of everything happening moving closer to that city. I didn’t realize how much the place would really blow up since I’ve been here, but it has really has been a center for touring players and sidemen so I had been thinking about it for a few years.
