The city is 4,697 feet above sea level and encompasses 155 square miles. Carson City is located 14 miles east of Lake Tahoe, 30 miles south of Reno, 228 miles east of San Francisco, and 437 miles northwest of Las Vegas. TRADE Carson City is a regional retail and wholesale trade center that draws shoppers from as far south as Bishop, California, and from throughout adjacent counties to the east and west. Carson City’s primary trade area, within a 25 mile radius, is estimated at 85,000, with a total trade area in excess of 225,000. The two major towns are Minden and Gardnerville, but also included are Genoa, Topaz Lake, Stateline/ Kingsbury, Glenbrook, Zephyr Cove, and Antelope Valley. Carson Valley comprises the towns of Minden (the County seat), Gardnerville, and Genoa. Douglas County was established in 1861 and encompasses 751 square miles, which makes it the third smallest land area within the state, but the fifth most populated. The county has grown 177% over the past 20 years. The valley is connected to Lake Tahoe by an 11-mile drive on SR207 also called Kingsbury Grade. Average elevation for the valley is 4,750 feet and Lake Tahoe’s average elevation is 7,280 feet. The towns of Minden (County seat), Gardnerville and Genoa are unincorporated. County residents elect officials to provide community leadership and administration. Currently, the county operates under a commission- manager form of government. Interstate 80 provides critical links to majority urban centers to the west and east; including Reno, San Francisco, and Salt Lake City. U.S. Highway 93, a north-south route and NAFTA corridor, provides connections to Twin Falls, Idaho to the north and Las Vegas to the south. State Highway 225 follows a northerly route through the Owyhee Mountains where it accesses the Boise area and Interstate 84 near the Oregon border.
