Mikky Ekko Has Come Home. He Recorded His 2015 Debut Album
Mikky Ekko has come home. He recorded his 2015 debut album, Time, in places as far-flung as London, Stockholm, and Los Angeles, plus any point on the compass where inspiration struck while he was on tour with Justin Timberlake, One Republic and Jessie Ware. But he wanted to record Fame, his next album, in the city that had proved both a permanent address and an inspiration for him since moving there in 2005 to attend college. It’s said that people have lucky cities, a geographic location where they seem to flourish or feel that they are their best selves. Although born in Shreveport, Louisiana, with its rich history of country rock and electric blues, Ekko found such a place in Nashville. It allowed him the freedom to be who he wanted to be — starting with those early gigs he played at 12th and Porter with slashes of red painted across his chiseled face. It informed the haunting music of his largely a cappella 2009 dreamscape Strange Fruit, a five-song EP he recorded while still a student at nearby Middle Tennessee State University that had far more in common with Brian Eno than it did Billie Holiday. A restless creator — sometimes writing two songs a day, starting most days at 4:45 am — Ekko quickly followed up Strange Fruit with two companion EPs the next year: Reds and Blues. One of the songs on Reds, "Who Are You, Really,” made its way to underground beatsmith Clams Casino, known mainly for his work with ASAP Rocky, Lil B and The Weeknd. -

The pivotal role of social networks in the cultural production of music is first examined by treating an independent record label of the post- punk era as an offline social network. -

Mayor's Report March 2018
20th Mayor’s Report to the Assembly Mayor’s Question Time – 22nd March 2018 This is my twentieth Mayor’s Report to the Assembly, fulfilling my duty under Section 45 of the Greater London Authority Act 1999. It covers the period from 9th February – 8th March 2018. Executive summary £24 million for local communities to play a role in regeneration On 7 March I awarded £24 million of funding to projects from across the capital that will enable local people to take an active role in the regeneration of their communities. More than 200 bids for funding were made to my Good Growth Fund, delivered through the London Economic Action Partnership (LEAP), and 27 are now being taken forward, with several organisations receiving funding in the next few months. All of the successful projects will deliver social and economic improvements including investment in community assets, workspaces, green infrastructure and cultural venues. I am using this funding to challenge preconceptions about how regeneration takes place. I want to give all Londoners – regardless of background – the opportunity to be actively involved in their city and have more places to live, learn, work and play. The projects I announced funding for today will help us to tackle inequality, strengthen civil society, and ensure the benefits of regeneration are felt by all. Tackling the ‘injustice’ of pay inequality On 2 March, I stepped up the fight against pay inequality in the capital by publishing for the first time ever comprehensive data on the pay gap affecting Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) employees for all organisations in the Greater London Authority (GLA) Group, making it among the first employers in the country to do so. -
Measuring Music 2015 Report Acknowledgements
MEASURING MUSIC 2015 REPORT ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Measuring Music is created on behalf of UK Music and its UK MUSIC MEMBERS members to highlight the economic contribution of the music industry to the UK economy. 2015 is the third edition of the report, which was first published in 2013. When we published Measuring Music last year, Tony Clayton, then Chief Economist of the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) said: “The IPO welcomes UK Music’s collaborative research on the economic contribution of music. This excellent piece of work meets both the IPO’s Standards of Good Evidence and National Accounts standards.” We are pleased to continue to work collaboratively with the IPO on research, as well as with other relevant bodies including Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and the Office for National Statistics (ONS). In particular, we are grateful to the ONS for allowing us access to the Virtual Microdata Lab (VML), which has enabled us to apply a bespoke methodology for the calculation of the music industry’s GVA. We are grateful for collaboration from all parts of the music industry with this research. Over the past two years in excess of 1,500 musicians have responded to our survey, giving us a vital and unique insight into their careers. In addition, accountants to some of the UK’s leading music acts have provided unprecedented insight into their clients’ earning structures. We have worked with all UK Music members to survey their memberships. This research would not be possible without this enthusiastic participation and vital data inputs from them. UK Music is the umbrella organisation which represents the collective interests of the UK’s commercial music industry- from artists, musicians, songwriters and composers, to record labels, LIVE MUSIC GROUP music managers, music publishers, studio producers, music • Association of Independent Festivals licensing organisations and the live music industry. -
