SYNCHRONICITY AND VISUAL MUSIC A Senior Thesis Presented to The Faculty of the Department of Music Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology The University of the Arts In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of BACHELOR OF SCIENCE By Zarek Rubin May 9, 2019 Rubin 1 Music and visuals have an integral relationship that cannot be broken. The relationship is evident when album artwork, album packaging, and music videos still exist. For most individuals, music videos and album artwork fulfill the listener’s imagination, concept, and perception of a finished music product. For other individuals, the visuals may distract or ruin the imagination of the listener. Listening to music on an album is like reading a novel. The audience builds their own imagination from the work, but any visuals such as the novel cover to media adaptations can ruin the preexisted vision the audience possesses. Despite the audience’s imagination, music can be visualized in different forms of visual media and it can fulfill the listener’s imagination in a different context. Listeners get introduced to new music in film, television, advertisement, film trailers, and video games. Content creators on YouTube introduce a song or playlist with visuals they edit themselves. The content creators credit the music artist in the description of the video and music fans listen to the music through the links provided. The YouTube channel, “ChilledCow”, synchronizes Lo-Fi hip hop music to a gif of a girl studying from the 2012 anime film, Wolf Children. These videos are a new form of radio on the internet. -

RECENTLY COMPLETED WORK WITH GRAMMY WINNER SAM Rancho Dominguez, CA SMITH AND HIS TEAM ON STAGE DRAPERY FOR February 18, 2015 SMITH’S SET IN THE LONELY HOUR TOUR. It has been a meteoric rise to the top for British singer and four Grammy winner, Sam Smith. The pop singer began his first arena headlining tour in North America in 2014. By year’s end, Smith found himself nominated for six coveted Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album. He ended up taking home all four of the mentioned Grammys. So few would disagree that British singer and songwriter Sam Smith is the current number one tour this season. Los Angeles area stage drapery manufacturer, Sew What? Inc. is also happy to have a small part in it, having recently worked with Smith’s team on their stage drapery used already for his In the Lonely Hour North American tour. In addition, Sew What? Inc. has something of a reputation as well. Megan Duckett, principal at Sew What? reported, "Sew What? was first contacted by Creative Director, Will Potts, as we have a good reputation in the industry and most designers are aware of who we are. " The drapery manufacturer worked on a stage set that was an original design by Will Potts. PRESS RELEASE 1/4 2019 BRIT AWARDS Sennheiser Performs Through Fire and Rain London/Wedemark, 13 March 2019 – The 2019 BRIT Awards were once again supported by Sennheiser, with its mics and IEMs delivering on the UK’s biggest live music awards show. The audio package was supplied - for the 22nd year - by Britannia Row Productions, and the ceremony was held in late-February at London’s O2 Arena in celebration of the best in British and international pop music. Winners on the night included Ariana Grande, Ed Sheeran, Drake, Little Mix and Nicki Minaj. As well as the show’s presenters, the evening also saw performances using a combination of Sennheiser products, including those from Hugh Jackman, Ms Banks and P!NK, who won the ‘Outstanding Contribution to Music’ award. “On a show of this size, ease and continuity are very important,” says Colin Pink, long-time Sound Designer / BRITs Engineer. “For all the presenters and award winners, we used the Sennheiser 6000 Series Handhelds with ME 9005 capsules, the perfect choice when clarity and low handling noise are extremely important.” P!NK using a Sennheiser 6000 Series transmitter with a 9235 capsule for her performance P!NK’s much-deserved accolade was boosted by a highly anticipated closing set that lasted over 11 minutes. The production saw the US singer’s incredible vocal range transmit from backstage through the arena’s thick, concrete walls, descend from the venue’s roof in a gymnastic gag, sound out through pyrotechnics and hit perfect notes during rainfall. Kwaku’s work is a testament to Brent’s contribution to the evolution of British black music and the commercial infrastructure to support it. His research contained separate sections on labels, shops, artists, radio stations and sound systems. In this version we have amalgamated these into a single ‘encyclopedia’ and added entries that cover the period between 2007-2020. The process of gathering Brent’s musical heritage is an ongoing task - there are many incomplete entries and gaps.
