  • Convergent Evolution of Boats with Sails A
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Convergent Evolution of Boats with Sails A. Bejan1*, L. Ferber2 & S. Lorente3 This article unveils the geometric characteristics of boats with sails of many sizes, covering the range 102–105 kg. Data from one hundred boat models are collected and tabulated. The data show distinct trends of convergent evolution across the entire range of sizes, namely: (i) the proportionality between beam and draft, (ii) the proportionality between overall boat length and beam, and (iii) the proportionality between mast height and overall boat length. The review shows that the geometric aspect ratios (i)–(iii) are predictable from the physics of evolution toward architectures that ofer greater fow access through the medium. Nature impresses us with images, changes and tendencies that repeat themselves innumerable times even though “similar observations” are not identical to each other. In science, we recognize each ubiquitous tendency as a distinct phenomenon. Over the centuries, our predecessors have summarized each distinct phenomenon with its own law of physics, which then serves as a ‘frst principle’ in the edifce of science. A principle is a ‘frst principle’ when it cannot be deduced from other frst principles. Tis aspect of organization in science is illustrated by the evolution of thermodynamics to its current state1,2. For example, 150 years ago the transformation of potential energy into kinetic energy and the conservation of “caloric” were fused into one statement—the frst law of thermodynamics—which now serves as a frst-principle in physics. It was the same with another distinct tendency in nature: everything fows (by itself) from high to low.

Designed and built by the Stephens Brothers of Stockton, VIP is number 7 of 19 Farallon Clippers, built between 1940 and 1962. The yard built her shortly after WWII as a gift to one of the Stephens Brothers, Theo, the Very Important Person. They sailed a course of 210 NM to Havana. The Grand, a Columbia 34 with Capt. Kelly Dobbs, James Bradford as navigator, Debi Hallmark as trimmer, and Sheila O’Neil in the pit, finished in 7th place in the PHRF division D. The Escape, a Catalina 350, with Capt. Jim McBrayer, Stan Dekiel as navigator, Karen Foster as trimmer and Bernard Steine in the pit, withdrew from the race and DNF. How- ever, they did motor to Havana. Escape Log by Karen Foster This year there was the first organized race from Miami to Havana. With safety in numbers we jumped on the chance to sail to Cuba. Originally about 60 boats signed up. The Captains would have a lot of paperwork to complete. Cost would be $500 per sailboat. Requirements were at least 4 persons on board, life raft, PHRF Rating ($50) Performance Handicap Racing Fleet, the "Find My Spot" locator device and the Homeland Security Sticker. There were waivers involved, of course and initially it was thought there was an insurance company that would cover us. That insurance company backed out just prior to the start of the race.

  • News Letter January 2012
NEWS LETTER JANUARY 2012 DICKERSON HISTORY A Historical Review Committee consisting of Barry Creighton, Paula and Jim Karr, D and Don Wogaman and the writer has compiled a Historical Review of Dickerson Boatbuilders from it’s humble beginning at Bill Dickerson’s back yard at Church Creek, Maryland in 1946 to Trappe and the building of the last Dickerson in 1987. The Dickerson Owners web site http://dickersonowners.org/ features a short video of this fabulous history and a 16 page document with photos. At the 2012 Dickerson Rendezvous, June 15-17, we will celebrate the Dickerson Boatbuilders by inviting those that are still with us and the relatives of those that have moved on to visit with us and join in this celebration. In compiling this history, it was heartwarming to talk to the relatives of those that have passed on like Preston Brannock and Donald Griffin and those that are still with us like Tom Lucke, Ted Reed and our own Jim and Paula Karr (who played such active roles in the organization and got married while working for the Dickerson firm). Following is a note that we received from Ted Reed who bought Dickerson Boatbuilders in December of 1978 with his friend Bennett Dorrance and built the D-37, D-50, and Farr 37 in addition to the D-41 and D-36; started a charter service, and built a new marina. Joe Slavin, “Irish Mist” “Dear Joe, First I want to thank you and the others involved in compiling the Dickerson History and keeping the Dickerson Association alive and well.
