Food - Protection, Security and Defence Tuesday 20th November 2018 As consumers we expect our food to be safe and readily available. We also believe our food is what it claims to be. However, the food supply chain is becoming increasingly complex and vulnerable to growing incidences of ‘food fraud’, ‘food crime’ and ‘misrepresentation’, such as through buying cheap food, unclear provenance or incorrect labelling. The LEAF Annual Conference is a unique opportunity for farmers, those in the food chain, researchers and industry representatives, as well as government officials to discuss and learn from each other about the current state of food protection, security and defence in the UK and across the globe. The event is designed to raise the discussion around the risks of intentional and unintentional contamination and vulnerability. He will examine the challenges around trade, integrity and transparency, explore the risks and set out how we can work together to encourage change, opportunity and innovation. 10.05 Building Our Defence Professor Guy Poppy, Chief Scientific Adviser, Food Standards Agency Professor Guy Poppy will highlight some of the science behind the threats to our food system, explaining what the Food Standards Agency are doing to protect our food. 10.20 Watching Out Minette Batters, President, National Farmers’ Union Consumer trust in how food is produced is vital; incidences of food crime have far reaching impacts on the agricultural sector. However, the vulnerability of crops and livestock to pests and diseases, the authenticity of inputs and the demonstration of best practice all play their part. Philip Wynn, Director, Wynn Business Partnerships Ltd, LEAF Chairman Philip has spent his career managing and advising businesses within nearly every sector of agriculture. Today his portfolio covers over 60,000 acres which includes the direct management of 7,000 acres in Lincolnshire as well as Directorships across the food and farming sector, including Beeswax Dyson Farming, Humber Grain and Fold Hill Foods. Philip was Master of the Worshipful Company of Farmers in 2016/17 and is Director of Mentoring for the Henry Plumb Foundation. He became Chairman of LEAF in 2017. Caroline Drummond, LEAF Chief Executive Caroline’s work focuses on encouraging more sustainable farming practices and building a better public understanding of farming and the environment. She is actively involved in many industry partnerships and initiatives. In 2009, Caroline was awarded the MBE for services to the agricultural industry and she completed a Nuffield Scholarship in 2014. www.leafuk.org @LEAF_Farming Annual Conference Programme.indd 4 15/11/2018 13:02 Speakers Professor Guy Poppy, Chief Scientific Adviser, Food Standards Agency Professor Guy Poppy took up his role as the FSA’s Chief Scientific Adviser in August 2014. He also continues with his research in global food security at the University of Southampton, where he is Professor of Ecology and previously directed Interdisciplinary Research across 11 research themes and 4 institutes. Minette Batters, President, National Farmers’ Union Minette Batters runs a tenanted mixed family farm in Wiltshire. She has been an NFU member from grassroots through to County Chairman; she served as Wiltshire’s Council delegate and also as Regional Board Chairman for the South West. Minette has also been a member of NFU Governance Board and served as NFU deputy president for four years from 2014 to 2018. Minette is also a Trustee of Farm Africa. Robert Mercer, Packington Pork and Packington Free Range Rob Mercer is part of a LEAF Marque certified family farming business based in Staffordshire. The family is involved in pork and poultry farming, cereal production, renewable energy, environmental schemes and commercial property. Rob spends his time running the pig business, Packington Pork, an outdoor sow operation which sells pigs either as free range pigs to butchers around the UK or as outdoor bred Freedom Food pigs to a large processor and then into the retailers. Roger Young, Chief Executive Officer, Agroisolab Roger Young has a long career in farming having spent 25 years managing blocks of land for private and corporate owners. In the early 1990’s he was head of farming at the Norwich office of Savills and managed the Carbrooke Hall Estate, Norfolk which was LEAF’s second demonstration farm. In 2000, Roger started his own business, Agroisolab - a leading food and timber authenticity business supplying origin authentication by analysis services to most major retailers. Roger is also a Nuffield Scholar. www.leafuk.org @LEAF_Farming Annual Conference Programme.indd 5 15/11/2018 13:02 Speakers Geraint Richards, Head Forester, Duchy of Cornwall Geraint Richards joined the Duchy of Cornwall as Head Forester in 1996, a role that has expanded over the years to include responsibility for the management of the trees, woodlands and forests across the Duchy’s landholding. Geraint is also actively involved with a wide range of rural organisations and initiatives, both in the UK and overseas, including Action Oak which he chairs. Brian Irwin, Chairman, Irwin’s Bakery Northern Ireland Brian Irwin is Chairman of Irwins Bakery, Northern Ireland which was established in 1912 and employs 400 people. Irwins Bakery bakes a wide range of breads for NI and ROI supplying all major stores and supermarkets. It is also known in Great Britain for its Rankin Selection range of Irish Breads. Brian Irwin is also Chairman of Northern Ireland Food and Drink Association (NIFDA). Andy Mitchell, Category Technical Manager, Sainsbury’s Andy Mitchell has worked in fresh produce since leaving university, working across low, medium and high care products, serving all the major retailers in the UK. Andy has also worked in production, enginering, NPD, process technology as well as a technical directory role at Marks & Spencer’s. Andy joined Sainsbury’s Supermarkets Ltd in November 2017 as Category Technical Manager. Mark Suthern, Managing Director - National Head of Agriculture, Barclays Bank Mark Suthern is Managing Director - National Head of Agriculture for Barclays Bank where he leads a team of 200 colleagues within the UK focused entirely on Farming, Landed Estates, Agri-Tech and Energy & Environment. Mark is involved in a number of industry bodies including the Chartered Institute of Bankers and the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society. He is also a Council Member at the Institute of Agricultural Management, Chair of Trustees for The Farming Community Network and a Mentor for the Lord Henry Plumb Foundation.
