Malaysians celebrate Aidilfitri in spirit of new Malaysia BERNAMA 15/06/2018 KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Muslims today celebrated Aidilfitri together with their families and relatives as well as non-Muslim neighbours and friends in the spirit of a new Malaysia that has fostered greater understanding and unity among the people. It is the first Aidilfitri celebrated with the new Pakatan Harapan (PH) federal government in power following the stunning victory of the PH coalition in the 14th general election on May 9. Muslims, from the Rulers to the common people, performed Aidilfitri prayers at mosques and surau throughout the country on the first day of Syawal today. They exchanged greetings and sought forgiveness. In keeping with the cost-cutting measures of the Pakatan Harapan government, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Muhammad V, had decreed that Istana Negara would not hold an Aidilfitri ?open house' and that the money saved should be used to help the less privileged. Sultan Muhammad V, who is the Sultan of Kelantan, performed Aidilfitri prayers at Masjid Muhammadi in KOTA BHARU, Kelantan, along with about 5,000 other worshippers. His Majesty was accompanied by the Regent of Kelantan, Dr Tengku Muhammad Faiz Petra, other members of the Kelantan Royal Household and state dignitaries. In KUALA LUMPUR, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad performed Aidilfitri prayers at the National Mosque, along with thousands of other worshippers. Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu, Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Salahuddin Ayub, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa and Federal Territories Mufti Datuk Dr Zulkifli Mohamad Akl-Bakri also performed the Aidilfitri prayers at the mosque.
