The team at Airdrie also had a deep affinity for Badge of Silver's damsire Silver Hawk, Roberto's fine sire son who stood at Airdrie for his entire career, and who can perhaps be credited with infusing Badge of Silver's progeny with an affinity for grass. "He was a stallion who really meant a lot to the farm, and who was our biggest stallion for a long time," Jones said of Silver Hawk. "When things were really bleak in the industry, he keep the farm above water and kept us going. So, yeah, having a grand- son of Silver Hawk means a lot to us." Badge of Silver=s fee was set at $15,000 Silver Medallion Benoit for his first year, and breeders responded by sending 153 mares his way. That was followed by a book of 144 mares in 2008. He bred 65 mares in 2009, and 74 mares last spring, when he stood for $10,000. "He was extremely well received in his first seasons at stud, but that fourth year is always so tough for sires," Bret said of the drop in fee. "We wanted to give breeders good value, and those breeders are already being rewarded for their faith in him." Airdrie has set Badge of Silver=s 2011 fee at $7,500.

Airdrie has a history of supporting its stallions--from its current roster, Brereton Jones has bred the likes of champion Proud Spell (Proud Citizen), GISW Cash In- cluded (Include), and recent GI Gazelle H. heroine No Such Word (Canadian Frontier)--and helped Badge of Silver's cause by breeding Silver Medallion from An- other Vegetarian (Stalwart), dam of GISW Sweet Talker (by former Airdrie inmate Stormin Fever). "Silver Medallion is out of one of our best mares, but that's our game plan here," said Bret Jones. "It's what we've always done with our first-year sires. We like to send them some of our best mares and give them the best chance for success." Airdrie sold Silver Medallion to Mike Ryan for $150,000 at the 2009 Keeneland September Sale. "He was a great-looking yearling," said Jones. "He was big, strong colt, and Mike Ryan, who's obviously a great judge of a horse, liked him a lot." Jones said one horse to keep an on eye out for is the aforementioned maiden winner Pride of Silver, who is trained by Bob Hess Jr. The $90,000 KEESEP yearling-- sold, but not bred, by Airdrie--was second sprinting twice at Hollywood, then won easily in a 1 1/16-mile Cushion Track effort Dec. 17 (video). AI know Bob is awfully high on the horse, and I think they=re pointing toward the GIII Sham S. [at Santa Anita Jan. 15],@ said Jones. From his few runners, Badge of Silver has worked well with different sires lines: King Congie and Silverleo are out of Mr. Prospector-line mares, Silver Medallion=s dam is a granddaughter of Hoist the Flag, and Pride of Silver is out of a Strawberry Road (Aus) mare. Asked what sort of trends he=s seen, Jones com- mented, AIt=s obviously still early days with Badge of Silver, but it=s very encouraging to see him already crossing well with Mr. Prospector-line mares. King Congie=s dam is a granddaughter of Forty Niner, and that Silver Deputy over Forty Niner is already a cross we=ve seen work very well, as it produced champion Kodiak Kowboy (Posse). Silver Hawk always crossed very well with the Mr. Prospector line, so it does not come as a great surprise to see his grandson producing fast horses from that cross.@ Jones also notes that Badge of Silver=s genetic make- up--the horse carries a single line of Northern Dancer and Mr. Prospector through Silver Deputy, and doesn=t have either on his dam=s side--gives breeders plenty of options. ABadge of Silver himself has no inbreeding through his first four generations, so there=s no shortage of oppor- tunities for him do well with a wide variety of mares,@ he added. -LM
