FAIRGROUND COMPLEX GROUNDSKEEPER Pay Range GC11 INTRODUCTION This classification has responsibility to design and maintain the landscape of the fair grounds; design landscapes; perform basic cleaning of fair buildings; supervise summer employees and correction inmates; serve as department safety representative. EXAMPLES OF PRINCIPAL DUTIES (Duties assigned to this classification include, but are not limited to, the following examples.) 1. Design landscaping of fair grounds, determine and order plantings, fertilize, weed, water, prune, schedule and apply and oversee application of pesticides, maintain landscapes. Maintain pesticide records. 2. Supervise and train summer employees; direct correction inmates temporarily assigned to fair. 3. Perform basic cleaning of fair buildings; clean, mop, strip, wax floors; wash windows, blinds, walls; clean and disinfect restrooms and kitchens, refill supplies; secure windows and doors after cleaning. 4. Operate hand gardening power tools; perform basic repair and maintenance of equipment. Operate tractor. 5. Act as departmental safety representative; train staff; establish and maintain chemical inventory and material safety data sheets. 6. Establish and maintain supply inventory records. KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY REQUIRED BY THIS POSITION Knowledge of: Considerable knowledge of horticulture methods, principles, practices, irrigation, plants, fertilizers, pests, diseases, pesticides used in landscaping and groundskeeping; reasonable knowledge of cleaning methods, procedures, equipment, and supplies used in custodial maintenance; basic knowledge of operation, maintenance and minor repair of hand power tools and equipment; basic knowledge of clerical support duties. Skill in: Safe operation of power tools and equipment and application of pesticides. Ability to: Communicate effectively in oral and written forms; adjust to priority changes; supervise and train summer staff; estimate time and materials and manage time efficiently; establish and maintain records and reports; courteously meet and deal effectively with other employees, vendors and the public. Education, experience and training: Three years progressively responsible work experience in landscaping or groundskeeping OR a satisfactory equivalent combination of education, experience and training. At time of appointment, must possess a valid Oregon driver's license. Must complete State Department of Agriculture examination for Public Pesticide Applicator License within six months of appointment or at earliest opportunity thereafter when the exam is administered. SUPERVISORY CONTROLS OF THIS POSITION Work is performed with supervision from fair operations supervisor. Recurring routine assignments are independently performed by employee on basis of past experience. Employee estimates time and materials and manages time efficiently. Employee uses initiative and judgment in completing routine assignments and interpretation of general administrative or operational policies and procedures is sometimes necessary. Significant deviations require prior approval. Work is checked at completion of projects. Incumbent may or may not work in proximity of supervisor. GUIDELINES Work is performed within established fair policy and procedure, horticulture and pesticide reference materials, OSHA standards, equipment manuals. Employee uses judgment in determining appropriate guideline and procedure, but then follows closely due to nature of work. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT Regular and consistent attendance is required. Work is performed both in inside and outside environments and may require bending, climbing, gripping of hands, kneeling, lifting up to 60 pounds, operating power tools with common exposure to chemicals. reaching and walking. Work is performed in an environment which involves everyday risks or discomforts and sometime adverse weather conditions. A reasonable amount of driving is required. .
