CLASS TITLE: GROUNDS MAINTENANCE WORKER II

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Maintenance and Operations Grounds Supervisor, perform semi- skilled and grounds maintenance duties in the beautification of District grounds and/or athletic fields; perform weed and pest control and abatement according to established procedures; prepare athletic fields for physical education or sporting events as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The Grounds Maintenance Worker II incumbents perform semi-skilled gardening and grounds maintenance duties on District-wide grounds, athletic fields and landscaped areas and involves specialized duties such as asphalt and concrete work and maintenance of playground equipment. Incumbents in the Grounds Maintenance Worker III classification operate medium to heavy duty equipment used in grounds work and may be assigned to work independently or as a lead on special grounds maintenance projects. Grounds Maintenance Worker I incumbents are assigned routine groundskeeping duties.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Perform a variety of semi-skilled gardening and grounds maintenance duties in the beautification of District-wide grounds and athletic fields. E

Prepare, measure, mark, line and maintain athletic fields for physical education and other sporting events according to established procedures and specifications; install temporary fencing. E

Trim, mow lawns, athletic fields and other grounds; utilize a power to edge around walks, shrub beds and athletic equipment; renovate, aerate and cultivate lawns. E

Operate a variety of light and medium duty equipment, such as front loader with attachments, dump trucks, riding mowers, rototiller, sod cutter and related hand and power . E

Perform varied duties in the transplantation, planting, fertilizing, pruning and trimming trees, hedges and shrubs; weed, and water grounds. E

Apply fertilizers and pest control methods to eradicate weeds, gophers and other pests according to established procedures. E

Operate hedge trimmer, hand and power tools; make routine adjustments and minor repairs to equipment. E

Maintain tennis courts; utilize back pack blower to remove leaves and debris; spray and remove weeds. E

Rake leaves and remove trash; sweep walkways. E

Assist in moving and arranging bleachers, furniture and equipment and perform minor custodial work for special events.

Assist in the maintenance and removal of athletic or playground equipment; perform minor sprinkler repair; assist in asphalt and concrete work as assigned.

Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF: Operation of hand and power tools and equipment used in groundskeeping and athletic field maintenance. Grounds maintenance procedures including mowing, edging, raking and weeding. Methods, equipment and materials used in gardening and groundskeeping work. Health and safety regulations.

ABILITY TO: Perform semi-skilled gardening and grounds maintenance duties including mowing, edging and weeding. Perform routine and semi-skilled grounds maintenance duties. Prepare and maintain athletic fields. Use a variety of vehicles, tools and machines utilized in the basic trade. Operate power equipment safety and efficiently. Mow, edge, water, weed, fertilize, rake and cultivate lawns, flower beds, athletic fields and other landscaped areas. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Education: High School graduate or the equivalent. Proof required. Experience: Two years general grounds keeping experience in gardening or maintenance. Testing: Passing score on District Grounds Maintenance Worker II test, within the last three years.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid and appropriate California driver's license.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

ENVIRONMENT: Outdoor environment. Driving a vehicle to conduct work. Seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions. Pollen.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Lifting, pushing and pulling heavy objects. Seeing to perform gardening and grounds work. Heavy physical labor. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate grounds vehicles, equipment and tools. Bending at the waist. Walking and standing for extended periods of time.

HAZARDS: Fertilizer and pest control chemicals. Working around and with machinery having moving parts.
