“THOSE WERE THE DAYS” Cape Cod Sea Camps Alumni Magazine Cape Cod Sea Camps Alumni Magazine 1 Dear Friends: Camp is a string of magical moments threaded together into a vibrant tapestry which creates the story of camp each summer. Every moment at camp can potentially change a life, make an impact or create signif- icance. All summer long, but especially at the end of the summer, we hear stories of the undeniable influence the camp experience has had on a child, an individual or a family. For example, an article titled “The Afterglow” written by Stephen Wallace, Resident Director of Counselor Training, for Psychology Today, invokes the following response from a recent CCSC graduate of the Counselor Training Program. The article deals with the role of summer camps in helping young people master the three primary developmental tasks of late childhood and adoles- cence, “Reading ‘The Afterglow’ brings back so many learning experiences and memories of camp! I still think about how much it (camp) helped me grow and prepared me for more independence in my life!“ How are these flashes of camp memories so gripping and profoundly emotional? Maybe they are the result of campers and staff focusing their energies only on the camp experience, forcing distractions of the world outside the “camp bubble” to disappear and sharing each tiny piece of summer camp with genuinely interested adults and peers. The in- tensity of this focus imbues each person to be fully participatory, engaged and seeking ways to create positive connections and contributions with each other and with the camp community as a whole. Magic happens naturally and especially when groups of people of all ages work together towards a common goal. The magic of camp includes sharing in the world of nature and this spectacular location on Cape Cod, the energy created by a song at a campfire or an all camp gathering, cele- brating a milestone reached, linking up with a friend or favorite counselor, or just listening to the silence of a summer evening. Magic also happens when voices are heard and listened to. “The positive peer culture it (camp) provided and the thoughtful, engaged guidance of the coun- selors really cultivated a strong sense of being inside of me, one who became a confident and compassionate leader.” ~ A CCSC Alumni enrolling her son for his first experience in a resident camp. The meaningful consequences of the shared experience called “CAMP” generates a better un- derstanding of “self”. The importance of making decisions independently, using the many community resources available to ask for help and support when experiencing difficulties; be- ing self-reliant by making positive choices and accepting responsibility for personal behavior; demonstrating self-confidence by expressing confidence in an ability to succeed educationally and socially; embracing opportunities to try new things through exploration, making new friends, and contributing positively to the community as a whole; and finally, respecting oneself, oth- ers and the institution of camp are the valued outcomes of the camp experience. The path of self-awareness nurtures one’s growth and well-being. “She has been forging friendships (at camp) that carry her through the year, beyond camp. She has an enthusiasm to participate and attempt just about any sport. I feel the exposure to your multitude of programs is much to credit for this. She feels like she is a part of camp…….like going home.” ~ Parents of a 2014 camper The memories, the magic and the ultimate meaning of the camp experience expand beyond the summer, like ripples in a pond from a thrown pebble. The dazzling tapestry created each sum- mer at camp is woven with unending magical moments …… I encourage your connection to Cape Cod Sea Camps and if you have a friend or family interest- ed in our programs or would like current information, please let us know. Visit us in person or check out our website at www.capecodseacamps.com. Cheers to a healthy, happy and prosper- ous New Year. From my council ring to yours, Nancy W. Garran Executive Director

February, 2015

Dear Fellow Alumni,,

Your support of The Grant W. Koch Scholarship Fund allowed 18 boys and girls, who otherwise would not have had the opportunity, to be at camp last summer. Most of the recipients went for two weeks of day camp at Cape Cod Sea Camps, Brewster Day Camp, Camp Farley and Camp Favorite. The expressions of appre- ciation from the campers and their parents left no doubt in our minds that we are doing important work. The kids had life-changing experiences they will carry with them forever. They learned the fundamentals of many camp activities and also formed new relationships under the guidance of caring, skilled, sympathetic coun- selors. Your gifts made this possible!

Rick and Mike visited 4H Camp Farley last summer to see their program in action. It was exciting to see a camp so different from Cape Cod Sea Camps working in its own way to attain the same objectives as CCSC. They have a dedicated, caring staff, and the children were having a wonderful time. We felt fortunate to have the chance to visit them and observe for ourselves the kind of camping experience some of our scholarship recipients were having.

We hope you will find it possible to continue your financial support of the GWK Fund, and increase that support, if you can. Contributions to the Fund are tax- deductible within the terms of the Internal Revenue Code, since we are a 501(c) (3) tax-exempt charity. Moreover, close to 98% of your dollars go directly to children’s scholarships because our administrative expenses are very low. We’re proud of that ratio, and hope it will give you further encouragement to entrust your gifts to this worthwhile undertaking.

Please be as generous as you can, but know that every gift is import- ant, regardless of the size. We and the campers will be very grateful.

With best wishes, and our thanks--

Rick Francis, Trustee Mike Halperson, Trustee

Cape Cod Sea Camps Alumni Magazine 11 Alumni Contributing to Camp Ranks Written by Resident Camp Director Dave Peterson Cape Cod Sea Camps continues to be a leader in the camping industry and one of the last large camps remaining on Cape Cod. Thanks to the loyalty of our Alumni and current camp families, we continue to add value to the camp experience for our campers. Over the past 6 years, we have increased our program space and activity opportuni- ties with the addition of our new Boathouse, Swimming Pool and Art Center. This past summer we had our largest sailing fleet with 30 Cape Cod Mercuries, 24 Sunfish and 12 Club 420s. We also added an introduction to Fencing for last summer’s campers. Alumni choose to send their children to CCSC because of the Resident Camp traditions of Summerfest, Rendez- vous, Colors, Vespers, Saturday Shows, Sunday Yardarm (now called the Sunset Show), Sailing Races, Bay Swim, Monomoy Cup and Emma Del Cup evoke fond memories. This summer 15% of our resident campers equaling 90 children were Chips (children of alumni). This reference was coined many years ago at Monomoy and denotes a family legacy as a Chip or “Chip off the Old Block”. On the Staff front, JC graduates who join the ranks of our Alumni upon graduation of the Counselor Training Program also return as staff each summer. This past summer we enjoyed the company of 14 JC graduates on the Resident camp staff. We also had 4 staff members join us whose parents had been on our staff some time ago. We know they enjoyed the experience as much as their par- ents and now have their own fond memories of a summer on Cape Cod Bay. In 2014, campers attended CCSC from all corners of the globe. The geographic distribution at the Resident Camp included campers from 23 States with MA, NY, CT and NJ accounting for a large percent- age. We also had campers from 15 different countries including; Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Dominican Republic, England, France, Hungary, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Russia, Spain and Switzerland. This is pretty indicative of our annual distribution of campers each summer. We hope you will consider adding your children and grandchildren to our CCSC ranks in coming summers. We now have both day and resident camp programs in a variety of session lengths to appeal to all campers.

The weather potentially could have totally exacerbated our situation were it not for the one and only Julia Fraser who took over control of the event. Although the size of the event was impacted by the inability of those from the north to get to the south, the quality of it was not compro- mised at all. Joining Julia (W’69–CCSC’81 & more) was Tomas Ayala (CCSC’07–‘14), and Michael Raymond (M’65–‘71) with his wife Nancy. It was a beautiful, sunny day.

Well…this is a reunion that could not have taken place in a nicer place. A great lunch at the Slanted Door in San Francisco’s famous Ferry Building provided a great backdrop for a wonder- ful gathering of CCSC alumni. We were joined by Alden Mills (CCSC’78-’82) and his wife Jennifer, Laurie Gardner (CCSC’79-’80), Karen Rauschenbach Cook (W’56-’58) and her daughter Leslie and her children, Jay Sherwin (M’68- ’70), David Heindel (M’62-’71), Jake Heindel (CCSC’05- ’06), David Burwick (M’70-CCSC’82), Carey Holland Bur- wick (CCSC’81-’82), Loren Alusic (CCSC’85-’98) and his wife Jennifer Trudel-Alusic, and last but not least the brother and sister team of Frank Pagliaro and his sister Alix Pagliaro Barthelmes. With more than 35 former and current campers and staff attending, it was one our biggest ever 21st century reunions. And it was fun. Trade Restaurant provided the backdrop for this event reuniting a ton of folks from more than 60 years ago. And it was exciting for me to see my former camper Howard Witkes who still gets his newsletter from his parents. If you are not getting it directly, you should let us know your address. Of particular excitement was a banner that Beth Konaires presented to Carol Baillie Austin (accepting for the Delahanty family) to be hung on the Big House during ceremonial occasions.

Cape Cod Sea Camps Alumni Magazine 19 20 Cape Cod Sea Camps Alumni Magazine Written by Day Camp Assistant Director Chris Peterson For many camping traditionalists, Day Camp may not ap- pear to embrace the usual camp experience expected from an overnight camp. However, the reality is Day Camp is C-A-M-P! Although memories of roasting marshmallows over a campfire under the evening stars or attending a much anticipated camp dance may not be a part of a regular day camp program, a day camper still receives all the essential values, life skills and opportunities a summer camp pro- gram excels at providing. The unique benefits of Day Camp provides a camp experience which fosters coping with being away from home, building a team and connection to the entire camp community as well as improving athletic, intel- lectual and social skills.

Day Camp provides C-A-M-P to children who are young and anxious about being away from home, or not ready for the separation of resident/overnight program. A day program can be the perfect testing ground for reluctant participants to become familiar with the feelings of parting from comfortable family routines.

CCSC offers a day camp program which allows campers ages 4 to17 to get a taste of summer camp. The hurdle of a two or three week session is elimi- nated by offering the same experience in a one week option. Conveniently, parents or grandparents are able to watch their camper thrive in a camp environment on a daily basis, demonstrating readiness to handle a new situation.

Most importantly Day Camp helps develop a fun and effective partnership between the camp and families. This allows for camper growth and skill building which inevitably takes place in our unique setting. Staff are excit- ed to talk with parents about their children’s day, the activities offered and special programs included each week. It is our goal to help build campers confidence and skills, by positive reinforcement and a nurturing individual initiative. If a camper is struggling in an activity, behaviorally or adjusting to our surroundings, we establish a connection with the family to help find a solution for a successful time at camp. Campers are rewarded with certificates of achievement and personal feelings of accomplishment.

Day Camp fosters the initial success for longer-term growth away from home. Whether it is developing a new friendship or cultivating a passion for sailing, camp is “tailor made” for creating positive progress in a child’s life. Cape Cod Sea Camps plays an important part in the lives of a family and provides a background for preparing children to “step out in the world” on their own. Although home is certainly a wonderful, safe place for a child, camp allows a child to gain independence in a unique setting. A Day Camp program is definitely C-A-M-P and is rich in moments to build a child’s character, values and life experience.

Cape Cod Sea Camps Alumni Magazine 25 Dear CCSC Alumni,

Greetings from the “Group Business”! Our off season Camp Rentals were strong in 2014 hosting roughly 100 groups here on our grounds before and after the summer camp. We hosted a variety of different types of groups including school field trips, sports camps, weekend re- treat groups and single day events. Our largest customers still remain as Paul Turner’s Soccer Camp (PTUSA) in August, hosting close to 325 soccer players that come for a week long sports camp and the National MS Society - Cape Cod Challenge Walk with 700+ walk- ers that spend three days walking Cape Cod and fundraising for the organization. We rounded out September with some local school field trips, weekend retreat groups and the American Lung Autumn Escape Bike Trek.

One of our new goals has been trying to promote event and function space during the off season. With the addition of our Art Center, Boathouse and New Pool for use as function space; we have been able to host a variety of functions and catered events such as rehearsal dinners, birthday parties, baby and bridal showers and other single day events. The Art Center is heated and has allowed us to rent that space year round for events and hosting meetings during the winter, it has been a great re- source and has allowed us to expand our offerings.

Our Camp reaches much further beyond the summer activities, with our seasonal rentals of the property we hosted roughly 6,200 people and served 28,000 indi- vidual meals! These user groups have created many traditions on their “Cape Cod Trips” and have great stories they enjoy sharing, our longest standing customers are American Lung Society at 30 years of using our facility and Sage Park Middle School who came when we were still at the Monomoy site roughly 35 years ago. I often meet people outside of the Camp in our travels that have a connection to Camp through a school field trip, special event or retreat. CCSC is a very special place whether you attended as a camper or came on a school field trip or retreat.

As a CCSC alumni, we encourage you to explore more about our year round offer- ings. 26 Cape Cod Sea Camps Alumni Magazine Celebrating Our 46th Anniversary!

Cape Cod Sea Camps Alumni Magazine 27 On an absolutely glorious day this past spring, the Cape Cod Sea Camps hosted a “retirement” party for Sherry Mernick and Rick Francis at the Wequasset Resort and Golf Club in the Twenty-Eight Dining room. It was quite a confluence of the past and pres- ent wrapped around two incredible people - who spent a combined 115 years at camp Rick with John Redpath – one of CCSC General Manager Ed Barber bookend and affected the lives of countless thousands his counselors when he was Head ed by Robin Lord and Deb Greenwood of campers and staff. “Big Rick”, as he is af- Counselor of the Monomoy Junior fectionately referred to, started as a camper Counselors in the 60’s. in 1945 and fully experienced the strength of Monomoy at its height and the transition into the merged Cape Cod Sea Camps – Mono- moy and Wono. He served as our program director for decades overseeing the compli- cated introduction of our modular sched- ule into the daily lives of campers after the merger. His strong presence will be missed. Sherry started at Wono in 1968 and served as a counselor and head counselor until she was brought into the yearround operation of the camp in the 70’s as a Director. She also Our esteemed former head of Drama for many years at Wono – Peter Greene served as a supervisor in the new world of – with his wife Liz and our very own Michael Halperson giving Rick some Monomoy and Wono when it transitioned pointers on public speaking Michael Halperson into a co-educational summer camp located on the Wono Campus. Sherry was known for her good listening ear, kind words, portray- ing Hebzebah Clamflats on the Early Show and singing her signature song from Carol Burnett – “We’re so glad we’ve had this time together”. We are all glad to have known and worked with Sherry and we wish her and Rick much happiness in their retirement.

The team’s found- er and leader for the last 20 years, Rick “Otis” Moyer, turned in his spandex.

Back in 1994 Otis and Todd Brescia (MDC alumni) decided to ride in the PMC. They had almost no idea what they were getting into, or how it would impact CCSC for the next 20 plus years. In 1994 our team of two, had to raise $900 each, and the PMC donated $2.8 million to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. 21 years later, our team of 16 each had to raise $4,500, and the PMC donated $41 million to fight cancer!

Over the years there have been 100 different riders on team CCSC, who have raised over $1.3 million. Staff, alumni, parents, and members of the com- munity have participated. This year’s team included alumni Tom “Pranny” Pranikoff, Peter Eleftherakis, and Hilary Gluskin. Current staff included Brian Lutes, Andrew “Crash” Sims, Deb Gauley, Brenda Guariglio, and Mike Moore. The team raised over $118,000. And for the record, even though Otis didn’t ride, he still raised over $10,000!

There were several other groups from the Cape Cod Sea Camps that helped out with this year’s PMC. We had 24 staff members and alumni who drive out to Mass Maritime Academy at 3am. There they met the waking riders and assisted them with putting their luggage on trucks.

Along the ride we come to Da-Hedge. Da-Hedge describes the hedges at the front of camp that run along 6A. Starting early in the morning, the resident campers and staff line Da-Hedge and cheer on all the PMC riders. They make banners and T-shirts. They have noise makers. It is the biggest cheering sec- tion along the 190 mile route. And a highlight for all PMC riders.

The camp bookkeeper, Carol Thibert, and her family run the Brewster Wa- ter Stop. They manage 100 volunteers, and take care of all the riders. This includes food, water/Gatorade, first aid, bike mechanics, etc. They’ve been in running this waterstop for 30 years!

At the finish line this summer were over 100 representatives from CCSC vol- unteering. This group included the day camp JC’s as well as their counselors, the resident camp AC’s, and about half of the day camp staff. They did many jobs, but their biggest responsibility was reuniting exhausted bikers with their luggage. It might sound easy, but every rider seems to pack a black duffle bag…5,000 riders = 5,000 black bags!

We also want to say a big thank you to CCSC Alum, and current PMC staff member Justine Darmanian for helping with all sorts of logistics.

And by the way…IT RAINED BUCKETS during the ride!!! And we still had a great life experience. Cape Cod Sea Camps Alumni Magazine 29 freedom TO BE A HAPPY CAMPER

Marina’s book and some thoughts about her:

“In her brief life Marina Keegan managed to achieve a precocious literary mastery. Her wry, wise, lyrical voice is unforgettable, and her vital, exuberant spirit reminds us powerfully to seize the day. Though every sentence throbs with what might have been, this re- markable collection is ultimately joyful and inspiring, because it represents the wonder that she was.”—J.R. Moehringer, author of The Tender Bar

“I will never cease mourning the loss of my beloved former student Marina Keegan. This book gives partial evidence of the extraordinary promise that departed with her. Throughout she manifests authentic dramat- ic invention and narrative skill. Beyond all those, she makes a vital appeal to everyone in her generation not to waste their gifts in mere professionalism but instead to invest their youthful pride and exuberance both in self-development and in the improvement of our tor- mented society.”—Harold Bloom, Sterling Professor of the Humanities, Cape Cod Sea Camps Alumni Magazine 33 Priscilla Painton (W’71-’74) and Andrew John Heyward were married Tuesday evening at the Manhattan home of their friends Lili Lynton and Michael Ryan.
