FROM HEARTACHE STEMS GREAT JOY =S DAY AT By Emma Berry ROYAL ASCOT One of the most popular winners of Royal Ascot will undoubtedly be Heartache (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}), who is owned by 76 members of the Hot To Trot racing syndicate, the brainchild of Luke Lillingston and Sam Hoskins. On a day when it was too hot even to break out of a walk, the Clive Cox-trained filly had her joyful owners sprinting for the winner's enclosure after her victory over favourite Happy Like A Fool (Distorted Humor) in the G2 Queen Mary S. on Wednesday. "When we set this syndicate up six years ago, the whole idea was to get people into racing horses who wouldn't normally do so and perhaps couldn't afford to do so on their own but loved racing and loved going racing," said Lillingston. "I know the team behind Merriebelle Stable pretty well and I know that they came here full of confidence with Happy Like A Fool. She travelled well, Ryan [Moore] had her in a lovely position and she came home really well. She=s very classy, she gets the [one-mile] trip really well and gallops out strong when asked. [Former trainer] David [Wachman] thought the world of her last year and she=s just getting better and better.@ Moore heaped further praise on the winner and continued, AShe=s very professional and only does what she has to do. It=s a hard task to win two Guineas and then come here, but the trainer can do those magic things. LETTER FROM ASCOT: JOCKEY DREAMS DOWN THE SHEDROW WITH by Dave Johnson CHRISTOPHE CLEMENT If you are reading this column, you probably wanted to be a jockey when you were a kid, right? Who didn't want to ride in a race if you went to your local track with family and friends. I rode the back of the couch, like you did, while listening to the race call. I even rode my bicycle with a whip. One Indian summer evening, I needed a bit more from my Schwinn, and gave it a crack. The stick went through the back wheel and I damn near killed myself. Today, I found out the most talented rider in Europe, William Buick, also rode the back of the sofa. But, at age 10 and the son Walter Buick, eight-time Norwegian champion rider, William made it a game. The youngster was so attuned to the styles of the great riders at that time, that he had his dad guess who he was on the back of the couch by the way he was riding! Cont. p6
