This is an excerpt from a presentation that she provided at the On Miracle Ground XX conference held in Chicago in 2017. We are also pleased to include a contribution from Françoise Kestsman-Durrell as well as from Noel Guckian, the current owner of the Mas Michel, occupied by Durrell from 1958 to 1966. In addition, we have interspersed some artwork by contributor Geoff Todd who has taken his inspiration for this series of images from Durrell’s The Alexandria Quartet – look for the corresponding article from Mr. Todd, as well. The incomparable Grove Koger builds out our Durrell-related bibliography in his ‘Chart Room’. The plaque celebrates the fact that Lawrence Durrell and Gerald Durrell were “writers and Philhellenes”, and that they lived in Corfu 1935-1939. Lawrence Durrell was one of the most influential novelists of the twentieth century. In addition to being a significant poet, dramatist and travel writer, he wrote The Alexandria Quartet (1957- 60) which changed the direction of the modern novel, The Avignon Quintet (1974-85) which achieved a synthesis of western narrative style and eastern philosophy, and his personal evocation of Corfu, Prospero’s Cell (1945). Gerald Durrell was the founder of the Jersey Zoological Park (1959) and became one of the world’s leading experts and activists in the breeding of animals in danger of extinction in their natural habitat. A humorous and persuasive writer and broadcaster, he popularised his work with books such as A Zoo in my Luggage (1960). His own accounts of growing up in Corfu include The Garden of the Gods (1978) and the world-famous best-seller My Family and Other Animals (1956). Their books – and, in the case of My Family and Other Animals which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2006, in two films of the book by the BBC, in 1989 and 2005 – contributed significantly to the worldwide reputation of the island of Corfu and to the development of the Corfiot tourist industry.

Who is Gerald Durrell? Gerald Durrell was an English conservationist. He worked extremely hard to preserve endangered animals around the world. He set up the Durrell Wildlife Trust and a zoo to protect endangered animals. Conservationist – someone who works to protect the environment. Who is Gerald Durrell? Gerald Durrell was born on 5th January, 1925 in Jamshedpur, India. When Gerald was three years old, his family moved back to England. How Did he Become Interested in Wildlife? When he was 10 years old, his family moved to the island of Corfu. This is where Gerald Durrell became fascinated with animals and all things living. He was thrilled to get a donkey for his birthday from his mother and siblings. However, his brother, Larry, poked the donkey in one of its hooves. Because it was hurt, it kicked Larry! How might this have affected Durrell's feelings about protecting animals? Life in England? When the Second World War began in 1939, the Durrell family moved back to the UK. They lived in Bournemouth, a seaside town in the south of England. Due to his love of animals, Gerald got a job working in a local pet shop. He loved riding horses, eventually became a stable hand and riding instructor. When he was 21 years old, he inherited £3000. He used this money to pay for his first animal collecting expedition. What Did He Do on His Expeditions? Over the next ten years, he travelled around the world, to many less known areas, to collect animals for the major British zoos. He was interested in these animals and how to look after them.

2016 Summer Grant Report Mary Sanders Pollock, Professor of English [email protected] September 15, 2016 a. Project title: Gerald Durrell: A New Biography b. Stated Goals: “During the summer grant period of 2016, I will write the first two chapters (outlined below) of a biography of Gerald Durrell (1925-95), an internationally respected conservationist and the author of more than thirty books--travel writing, memoir, environmental writing, and fiction.” [First chapter devoted to Gerald Durrell’s childhood on the Greek island of Corfu, second chapter to his teenage years in London during World War II.] c. Progress toward stated goals [results attached in Appendix]: I completed the second chapter and part of the third chapter. I produced the amount of work projected, but in a different form. Because my research travel to Corfu had to be delayed until 2017, I felt ill equipped to write about it. Instead of writing the first chapter, I began with the second chapter, a more thorough and detailed examination of Durrell’s London years than I anticipated because there were more primary materials and relevant theoretical work that I had not discovered when I wrote the grant application. As a result, this chapter is longer than originally planned. In addition, I wrote a section of the third chapter. The most significant work (and least visible) on the project absorbed my attention in May and June. After submitting the grant application, as I was writing a conference paper on a related topic (“Islomania, Island Biogeography, and the Durrell Literary Imagination”), it became clear to me that more grounding in cosmopolitan theory, as well as studies in immigration, exile, and refugee status would deepen and refine my initial assumptions about Gerald Durrell.

Classic Poetry Series Lawrence Durrell - poems - Publication Date: 2004 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Lawrence Durrell(1912 - 1990) Durrell was born, in Nepal, at the foot of the Himalayas. He went to school in England at the age of twelve and, after attending preparatory schools and subsequently failing the entrance exam for Cambridge on multiple occasions, played in jazz clubs in London for a time. It was during this period that he met Nancy Myers, who was to be his first wife. He and she attempted several ventures in England before moving at the same time as Durrell's family to Corfu (as recounted rather amusingly, if somewhat inaccurately, in Gerald Durrell's autobiographical My Family and other Animals, Birds, Beasts and Relatives, and Fauna and Family, and in more Lawrentian style in Prospero's Cell). From that time his career was varied and interesting: he served in the British Foreign Service in the Mediterranean during the Second World War, having only just escaped from Greece before the descent of the German Army upon Athens. From here he moved with Nancy and their daughter Penelope to Alexandria, where he gained a posting with the British government. Some of his experiences would later serve as the basis for his works of fiction, most noticably the Alexandria Quartet and, many years later, the Avignon Quintet. In 1948, Durrell spent what was by all accounts a miserable year in Argentina in the service of His Majesty's Government. Following this, he was only too glad to return to Europe (although one product of his time there was 'A Key to Modern British Poetry', for the most part he found himself completely unable to write).
