This is a problem given that there is overwhelming evidence demonstrating that Muslim converts are Published Mar 26, 2021 overrepresented among Western foreign fighters. Data from Canada corroborates this larger point: converts are highly representative in attempted and successful domestic terrorist attacks. Our article explores conversion to Islam and political violence as it relates to recent trends in Canadian Jihadist militancy. We distill the theoretical literature on conversion and radicalization to seven explanatory factors, including ideology; social networks; charismatic authority; political grievances; psychology; socio-economic and criminal circumstance; and enabling environments. We then build original empirical case studies – based on expert interviews and open-sourced documents – of three Canadian converts who engaged in terrorism, including John Maguire, Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, and Damian Clairmont. Using these case studies, we contextualize, analyze, and expand our collective understanding of conversion to violence, providing lessons for theory and methodology. Keywords: Conversion, Radicalization, Violent Extremism, Canada, Case Studies Introduction Radicalization to violence is a persistent and evolving challenge. The scholarship on the subject, however, often treats born Muslims and converts interchangeably.

  • UFC on FUEL TV: STRUVE Vs. MIOCIC
UFC On FUEL TV: STRUVE vs. MIOCIC Las Vegas, Nevada – The Ultimate Fighting Championship® organization returns to England this Saturday for an all- action card at the Capital FM Arena in Nottingham. In the heavyweight main event, the biggest man in the UFC® – 6ft 11inch Stefan “Skyscraper” Struve – collides with unbeaten uber-athlete Stipe Miocic in a fight which will catapult the winner towards the top of the division. Also on the stacked television card, charismatic welterweight Dan “the Outlaw” Hardy fights in his historic hometown for the first time since April of 2008 when he takes on The Ultimate Fighter winner Amir Sadollah and, in what could be the most exciting all-British battle in Octagon® history, elite welterweight John “Hitman” Hathaway takes on John “The One” Maguire. At an open workout today, the combatants sounded ready to go to war. Stefan Struve said: “Five round fight? It’s not a five round fight. This isn’t going five. It is a one or two round fight, depending on when I finish him. I am not worried about going five rounds if it happens, I hit pads for an hour at a time and every Thursday at my gym it is pretty much fight night where we do 15 x five minute rounds. I’ve changed nothing in my training. If it goes longer, okay, but I think this is a quick fight. “A win here puts me in the top five in the world. There’s a lot of hype on this guy and he’s also coming off a big win.

  • U DAPS Records of Apostleship of the Sea 1922-2014
Hull History Centre: Apostleship of the Sea U DAPS Records of Apostleship of the Sea 1922-2014 Accession number: 2014/20 Historical Background: The Apostleship of the Sea (AoS, or Apostolatus Maris in Latin) is a Catholic charity whose work is focused on the pastoral and practical care of seafarers of any nationality, race or belief whilst they away from their homes and families. From the late 19th century various Catholic Seamen's Missions were established at major ports throughout the world, and various work to help seafarers was undertaken by individual countries and by the Catholic Society of St Vincent de Paul. The first AoS branch was established in 1899 at the port of Glasgow by Father Egger as the Apostleship of Prayer Society. A framework and constitution was submitted to the Holy See in Rome and, in 1922, a letter of encouragement was sent from the Holy See. The movement grew and AoS were established at other major ports around the world. The laws and constitution of the movement were officially approved on 21 November 1957 and the now international movement became known as Apostolatus Maris, named after Mary, the Catholic patron saint of seafarers also known as 'Our Lady' and 'Star of the Sea'. Today, many centres use the name 'Stella Maris' ('Star of the Sea' in English) in recognition of this patron. Until the 2nd Vatican Council in 1966 the international network of AoS was governed by the AMIC. The AMIC was dissolved by the Council of 1966 and was replaced by the International Permanent Bureau (also known as the International General Secretariat).

During the last few years there has undoubtedly been more concern shown by congregations and dioceses in their history and in preserving the archives and other historical evidences recording it. Clear indications of this concern are the realisation that the original vocation of a religious congregation, the renewal of which is urged by Vatican II, is recorded principally in its archives, the provisions for the care of archives in rules and constitutions of congregations and in the new code of canon law, the encouragement given to archivists by the Conferences of Major Religious Super- iors in both countries, and new appointments of archivists in several dioceses within recent years.

  • UFC® on FUEL TV OFFICAL WEIGH-IN RESULTS
UFC® on FUEL TV OFFICAL WEIGH-IN RESULTS Las Vegas, Nevada – The Ultimate Fighting Championship® organization returns to FUEL TV tomorrow with what UFC president Dana White called one of the best televised cards of the year. All 22 fighters have weighed-in, and are ready to fight tomorrow. Emanating from the Capital FM Arena in the historic City of Nottingham, England, the FUEL TV televised event features six sick fights including a heavyweight eliminator, a clash between a hometown hero and an Ultimate Fighter winner, an all-British welterweight battle, a bantamweight clash between a top five contender and an exciting talent looking to make a name for himself, an undefeated lightweight prodigy taking on a four-time ‘fight of the night’ winner, plus, a throwdown between two ‘bombs away’ welterweight punchers. “If you don’t think this is a great card – you know nothing about mixed martial arts because this card is awesome,” said White. “The main event between Struve and Miocic is awesome and the winner of this fight becomes a top five heavyweight. These are the fights you have to win to get the world title – and it should be a great fight. These two have gone to a decision only once each – it could be the fight of the night. But I could say that about all the fights, though. You could throw a dart at the card and hit the fight of the night. Dan Hardy always, always brings it, and so does Amir Sadollah. That should be great too, especially with Dan fighting in front of his hometown fans.

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by University of Southern Queensland ePrints Monastic Regime at Banyo Seminary An Oral and Social History of the Pius XII Seminary, Banyo (1941 - 2000) Submitted by James John Madden B.A., M.Ed.St., Dip. Ed. for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Southern Queensland September 2010 Abstract This history of the Pius XII Provincial Seminary (1941 – 2000), frequently called Banyo, discusses the preparatory training of Catholic priests. In the strict rule-regulated regime of 1941 – 1964, priests trained in a monastic setting for a traditionally cultic role based on the celebration of the Eucharist. In the years 1965 – 2000, following the Second Vatican Council (1962 – 1965), Banyo reoriented its training to preparing priests as presbyters or ministers, emphasising their roles in the proclamation of God‘s word and a ministry of service as well as presiding at Eucharistic gatherings. This thesis shows how Erving Goffman‘s construct of a ‗total institution,‘ pervaded the monastic structure of the preparation of priests through the seminary system in the 1941 – 1964 period; it then examines the attempts to modify seminary training for preparing presbyters, an adaptation that destabilised but did not destroy the ‗total institution‘ character of the seminary. During changing times before Vatican II, the ability of a restrictive seminary system to provide appropriate preparation for cultic priests in the conditions of the local church was questioned. After Vatican II, attempts were made to develop an effective preparation program for the emergent model of presbyter as priest, prophet, and servant leader for the Queensland Church.
