Proceedings of the 24th Association of Public Authority Surveyors Conference (APAS2019) Pokolbin, New South Wales, Australia, 1-3 April 2019 Let There Be Rock: The AC/DC Phenomenon Volker Janssen APAS Publications Officer [email protected] ABSTRACT In a successful career spanning more than 45 years, AC/DC have persistently ignored trends in popular music and resolutely stuck to their bluesy, stripped-to-the-bone brand of high- voltage rock ’n’ roll. This paper investigates the AC/DC phenomenon by examining song lyrics and connotations, the band’s work rate, and the vocalist debate (Bon Scott vs. Brian Johnson). Furthermore, a group of 82 hardcore fans is examined to get a better understanding of their passion for the band, and it is outlined how the AC/DC brand is increasingly being marketed to a larger consumer base not limited to music lovers. It was found that the word ‘rock’ is by far the most prominent in AC/DC song titles but lyrically almost half of all AC/DC songs revolve around sex. While the frequency of album releases slowed considerably over time, the band generally played 150 live gigs following each studio album. Bon Scott material continues to account for at least 45% of the songs included in typical AC/DC live sets. Analysis of a questionnaire revealed how committed the cohort of hardcore fans is. They generally became serious fans in their early teens, prefer the older material, experienced their first gig during early adulthood and enjoyed up to 124 gigs since. This paper also demonstrates how one can collect, analyse, interpret and present data.

Le groupe a réalisé 15 albums studio, dont deux sortis uniquement en Océanie et remplacés par deux compilations (dont un EP) dans la Discographie de AC/DC discographie internationale. De plus, le groupe a réalisé 3 albums live, une semi-compilation/bande son ( Who Made Who ), deux coffrets, 13 DVD et VHS et une compilation à part entière (la bande son du film Iron Man 2 ), ce que le groupe avait toujours refusé de sortir jusqu'en 1 2009 . AC/DC a été formé en novembre 1973 par les frères Angus et Malcolm Young, écossais ayant émigrés en Australie pendant leur enfance. Le groupe a réalisé 2 albums en Australie avant de sortir son premier album en Europe et aux États-Unis, High Voltage , une compilation des deux premiers albums. En 1980, moins d'un an après la sortie du premier album à succès Highway to Hell , le chanteur Bon Scott meurt, suite à une asphyxie causée par ses propres AC/DC en 1979 à Belfast avec Angus Young à vomissements. Il est remplacé par l'anglais Brian Johnson, avec qui gauche et Bon Scott à droite. 2 AC/DC obtient son plus grand succès, Back in Black . AC/DC's mammoth power-chord roar became one of the most influential hard rock sounds of the '70s and one of the defining sounds of rock and metal. In its own way, it was a reaction to the pompous art rock and lumbering arena rock of the early '70s. AC/DC's rock was minimalist -- no matter how huge and bludgeoning their guitar chords were, there was a clear sense of space and restraint. Combined with Bon Scott's larynx- shredding vocals, the band spawned countless imitators over the next two decades and enjoyed commercial success well into the 2000s, scoring their biggest hits after Brian Johnson replaced the departed Scott. AC/DC were formed in 1973 in Australia by guitarist Malcolm Young after his previous band, the Velvet Underground, collapsed (no relation to the seminal American group). With his younger brother Angus serving as lead guitarist, the band played some gigs around Sydney. Angus was only 18 at the time, and his sister suggested that he wear his school uniform on-stage; the look became the band's visual trademark. While still in Sydney, the original lineup featuring singer Dave Evans cut a single called "Can I Sit Next to You," with ex-Easybeats Harry Vanda and George Young (Malcolm and Angus' older brother) producing.

AC/DC History Seit über 30 Jahren sind AC/DC schon im Rockbusiness vertreten. Egal wo sie hinkommen, sie füllen immer noch jedes Stadion, in dem sie spielen. Doch, wie in dieser Biographie zu lesen ist, hat auch die größte Rockband der Welt mal klein angefangen.. 1973-1983 AC/DC. Der Name ist Programm. 30 Jahre Starkstrom-Rock auf fast allen Bühnen dieser Erde. Doch als 1973 Malcolm Young und Angus Young, zwei Gitarristen aus Schottland, die in den 60er Jahren mit ihren Eltern nach Sydney ausgewandert waren, die Band gründeten (der Name AC/DC stammt übrigens von der Schwester der beiden), vermuteten wohl wenige, dass hier für eine der größten Rockbands der Geschichte die Geburtsstunde schlug. Nachdem in den ersten Tagen noch fast wöchentlich das Line-Up der Band wechselte, standen AC/DC am 31. Dezember 1973 mit der Besetzung Malcolm Young (g), Angus Young (g), Dave Evans (v), Larry van Kriedt (b) und Colin Burgess (d) das erste Mal auf der Bühne. Das Konzert fand im Chequer’s Club in Sydney statt. Neben den ersten beiden (von Malcolm und Angus) selbstgeschriebenen Liedern „Can I sit next to you, girl“ und „Rockin’ in the parlour“ spielte die Band Lieder von Elvis Presley oder Chuck Berry. Von letzterem hat Angus Young seinen legendären Duckwalk kopiert. Nach einigen erfolgreichen Konzerten in Sydney und Umgebung ging es im Juni 1974 das erste Mal ins Studio, um dort die erste Single „Can I sit next to you, girl“ mit der B-Seite „Rockin’ in the parlour“ aufzunehmen. Diese Single hatte (für eine Band in ihren Kinderschuhen) großen Erfolg, und unermüdlich spielten AC/DC Konzerte in Clubs und Bars.
