Job Announcement Forest Service – Every Kid Outdoors (EKO) Education Coordinator Resource Assistant Please Respond By July 26, 2019

The Northwest Youth Corps (NYC) in partnership with the United States Forest Service (USFS) will be advertising an Every Kid Outdoors (EKO) Education Coordinator Resource Assistant (RA). This is a 10 month full-time work experience from approximately late-August 2019 to late-June 2020. Created in 1984, and modeled after the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930’s, NYC is a non-profit job training and experiential education program for youth and young adults to learn and work in the field of natural resource management. Overview

The U.S. Forest Service - Siuslaw National Forest seeks a Resource Assistant to work in the Central Coast District (CCRD) in Waldport, Oregon. The Central Coast District comprises about 2/3 of the 630,000-acre Siuslaw National Forest. With a strong record of quality work, innovation and accomplishment the Forest and CCRD are well regarded both internally and externally. The District fosters and maintains a wealth of partnerships through creative and energetic work by top-quality, dedicated employees. Straddling the Range, the Siuslaw is one of the few National Forests in the lower 48 to manage ocean front real estate. “Restoration, Recreation, Partnerships” are the Siuslaw National Forest’s niche.

Position Description

Through a partnership with Northwest Youth Corps, the selected applicant will support the Siuslaw National Forest by engaging individuals and communities in natural resource management issues as well as career opportunities at both NYC and the U.S. Forest Service. The purpose of this position is to enhance education and outreach services to school and community youth organizations in order to better connect youth to the resources of the Siuslaw National Forest. While engaging all grade levels, the project will specifically target both 4th grade and underserved populations. The project will support work with partners and teachers to design a wider range of curriculum to meet Next Generation Science Standards, STEM learning components, with a goal to inspire students to become future stewards of our public lands. New education programs will be designed to meet the current needs of local schools and directly relate to current U.S. Forest Service missions and programs. Education will emphasize the Siuslaw’s restoration objectives and the role of U.S. Forest Service.

Resource Assistants in this position will:

- Coordinate existing youth and education activities on the district - Reach out to new schools and locations to develop new engagement opportunities. - Coordinate in-class visits, on-site student field trips, resource training/job-shadowing opportunities and events. - Involve youth directly in forest projects such as dunes restoration, watershed restoration, citizen science surveys (BioBlitz), and invasive species eradication. - Conduct classroom visits with curriculum-based presentations and hands-on activities. - Arrange field trips to a variety of forest sites (Oregon Dunes, , , ). - Communicate with teachers and youth organizations to plan and schedule events. - Coordinate participation among field rangers, volunteers, staff and partners. - Collaborate with educators and partners to develop site-based outdoor education curriculum for all grade levels which meets Next Generation Science Standards and STEM criteria. - Supporting other ongoing youth engagement activities around the forest.

Requirements

 Valid state driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle by the time of employment. Government vehicles are available for work-related travel but Resource Assistants are responsible for travel to and from duty station.  Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents at least 19 years old. Program Benefits

 NYC will provide the RA a total stipend of $16,320 divided across a 10 month term along with health care coverage, workers compensation, and FICA/Medicare.  The RA will receive $1250 in funding to reimburse relocation costs, program travel, and applicable trainings.  RA will have special Federal Government hiring authority upon completion of 960 hours of service.

This position is based in Waldport, Oregon. Waldport is a small city in Lincoln County, Oregon and has miles of sandy beaches, forest roads, hiking trails, Wilderness areas and a picturesque bay. Waldport, whose motto is “Where the Forest Meets the Sea” is located on the River and Alsea Bay. Alsea Bay is known as one of the most productive recreational fisheries along the Oregon Coast and the is known for outstanding chinook, coho, and steelhead fishing.
