Departmental Program in 1920. • • . •• 76 vi 1 A HISTORY OF THE INDIANA Sr:eATE SCHOOL FOR ~IE DEAF CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION This study has been motivated by an intimate contact with the Indiana State School for the Deaf as a teacher and by a growing interest in its development. This interest was further stimulated by coming into con- tact with the large volume of school records which, in some cases, date back to the beginning of the school in 1843. In spite of the fact that these original source materials have been fairly well preserved, no history of the school, other than comparatively brief sketches, has been written. It is hoped that this history of the Indiana State School for the Deaf will be of especial intere sb and value to those currently associated with the institution, as well as to the general public. In spite of a vigorous and ex- tensi ve public relat ions program, too f'ew are familiar with this institution which they help to support. It is further hoped that this history may be of value 2 by providing a basis for a greater understanding and appreciation of existing conditions. statement -of --the -_._-Problem Vmat events led to the founding of the Indiana state School for the Deaf, and how was it established? From the date of founding to the present, what significant changes or developments have been made in the following phases of the school: material equipment, ad- ministration, program of studies, instruction and student life? VJhat contribution has the school made to SOCiety? VVhat is the present status of the school relative to the phases listed in question two? Source ---of Data Sources of data include the following: school records, Annual Reports of the Trustees and Superintendent to the Gove rnor, The HOQ 3ier (student publ icat ion), local newspapers, American Annals of the Deaf, Volta Review, general history sketches, files of the State Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, personal interviews and personal observations. Method of Securing the Data The following methods were used in securing the data for study: examination and selection of pertinent data from the sources listed above, interviews, and personal observation. 3 _-Plan of Tr'eatment The general order of pre sent at ion will follow that of the maj(!)I' questions listed on page two. Though numer- cu s tables and figures are included, the majority of the data will be presented in narrative or expository form. The specific order of presentation will be a brief his- torical sketch, material equipment, administration, pro- gram of studies, instruction, students and student life, contributions, and summary. The general plan will be to present the status of the school at particular intervals to illustrate change and development. A sincere effort will be made to maLn» tain both accuracy and readability. Definit ions The term, Indiana state School for the Deaf, is the correct one to use in designating the institution described in this study. For the sake of brevity other shorter terms may occasionally be used. It is an educa- tional institution and not an asylum. The term asylum was erroneously applied in the school's early history. Art iculat ion is a te rm which was formerly used in referring to speech training for the deaf. "Deaf" is considere d the corre ct te rm to use in referring to a person who cannot heer. The term "deaf and dumb," is incorrect and embarrassing to the deaf person who, in the majority of cases, is not dumb in either an intellectual or physical sense. 4 Other terms, applying 'GO education of the Deaf or to this par-tLcu'l ar- school, will be explained in the body of the following chapters. Limitations Due to inaccuracies discovered in some secondary sources, the majority of the content of this history is based on data secured from the Annual Reports, Financial Records, Correspondence, or other original records of tte School for Deaf. The amount of description or discussion at any part icular stage ha s been 1 imited due to the School's unusually long history.

They are Illinois or Illini Indians, descendants of those who created the great mound civilizations in the central United States two thousand to three thousand years ago. The increased pressure from white settlers in the 1840’s and 1850’s in Kansas brought cooperation among the Peoria, Kaskaskia, Piankashaw and Wea Tribes to protect these holdings. By the Treaty of May 30, 1854, 10 Stat. 1082, the United States recognized the cooperation and consented to their formal union as the Confederated Peoria.

    1 Creating a Frontier War: Harrison, Prophetstown, and the War of 1812. Patrick Bottiger, Ph.D., [email protected] Most scholars would agree that the frontier was a violent place. But only recently have academics begun to examine the extent to which frontier settlers used violence as a way to empower themselves and to protect their interests. Moreover, when historians do talk about violence, they typically frame it as the by-product of American nationalism and expansion. For them, violence is the logical result of the American nation state’s dispossessing American Indians of their lands. Perhaps one of the most striking representations of the violent transition from frontier to nation state is that of Indiana Territory’s contested spaces. While many scholars see this violence as the logical conclusion to Anglo-American expansionist aims, I argue that marginalized French, Miamis, and even American communities created a frontier atmosphere conducive to violence (such as that at the Battle of Tippecanoe) as a means to empower their own agendas. Harrison found himself backed into a corner created by the self-serving interests of Miami, French, and American factions, but also Harrison own efforts to save his job. The question today is not if Harrison took command, but why he did so. The arrival of the Shawnee Prophet and his band of nativists forced the French and Miamis to take overt action against Prophetstown. Furious that the Shawnee Prophet established his community in the heart of Miami territory, the French and Miamis quickly identified the Prophet as a threat to regional stability.

Some ethnologists believe the Shawnee descended from the Fort Ancient people. The Shawnees were wanderers, who lived in many places in the south. They became associated closely with the Delaware in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Able fighters, the Shawnees stubbornly resisted white pressures until the Treaty of Greene Ville in 1795. At the time of the arrival of the European explorers on the shores of the North American continent, the American Indians were living in a network of highly developed cultures.     The History of Tippecanoe County Compiled by Quinten Robinson, Tippecanoe County Historian THE SETTING Tippecanoe County, located in west-central Indiana, is about 65 miles northwest of Indianapolis and 100 miles southeast of Chicago. Tippecanoe County is 21 miles east to west and 24 miles north to south and Lafayette, the county seat, is situated on the banks of the Wabash nearly in the center. About one-half the surface consists of broad, fertile, and nearly level plains. The balance consists of gently rolling uplands, steep hillsides or rich alluvial bottoms. Occasional wetlands or bogs are found but those were largely drained by the beginning of the 20th century. The Wabash River flows nearly through the middle of Tippecanoe County from northeast to southwest. Tributaries to the Wabash River that drain the north and west parts of Tippecanoe County are the Tippecanoe River, Burnett Creek, Indian Creek, and Little Pine Creek. Draining the south and east parts of the county are Sugar Creek, Buck Creek, North, South and Middle Forks of the Wildcat Creek, Wea Creek, and Flint Creek. Besides Lafayette, cities and towns in Tippecanoe County are West Lafayette, the home of Purdue University, Battle Ground, West Point, Otterbein, Dayton, Clarks Hill, Romney, Stockwell, Americus, Colburn & Buck Creek. In 2010 county population was set at 172,780 PREHISTORIC TIPPECANOE COUNTY The terrain, the Wabash River, and the creeks you see today in Tippecanoe County came to their present condition about 10,000 years ago as the last continental glacier retreated northward leaving a vastly different landscape than what had existed before the advance of the ice sheets began over 700,000 years ago.

The Indians surrendered and came to Greenville one year later to sign a peace treaty. General Wayne said he hoped the treaty would hold “as long as the woods grow and waters run.” The Treaty of Greenville marked the end of the Indian Wars in Ohio. Tecumseh, a Shawnee Chief, refused to sign the Greenville Treaty. Instead, he started a settlement in violation of the Treaty. He traveled extensively among various Native American tribes and worked to form a confederation that would present a united resistance to the United States. His plans failed when his brother, “The Prophet,” foolishly became engaged in and lost the battle with American forces in Indiana. Procedure: 1. Introduce the setting for the Greenville Treaty. 2. Distribute copies of Greenville Treaty Excerpts to students in small groups. 3. Have students read and summarize each article and answer the following: a. What agreement was made about prisoners? (all returned) b. Plot the treaty line on a map. Color the Indian lands red and the U.S. lands blue. (see map) c. Now plot your school on the map. Which side are you on? d. What rights did the Indians keep? (hunt peaceably in US lands) e.

  • Historical Indians of Indiana
    Information about the historical Native Americans living in the area now called Indiana begins with 17th century records and documents kept by such groups as the Jesuits, missionaries, French explorers, traders, soldiers, and administrators. It is not until 1679, when René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle entered the state in the vicinity of the St. Joseph-Kankakee port- age, that more definite accounts of history in Indiana occur. The major tribes historically present from this time to the mid-19th century in the area to become Indiana are described below. Miamis Potawatomis In early history, the Miamis were composed of Potawatomi groups moved around a lot in six bands or sub-groups, three of which survived early historic times.
