  • England Defeat South Africa by 22 Runs
14 Tuesday 29th September, 2009 Shah helps England defeat England make a mockery of Champions Trophy by Mike Norrish Clearly, it’s now time to scrap the South Africa by 22 runs Champions Trophy. Because if England can reach the semi-finals, then something, somewhere, is deeply wrong. Bonkers. There’s no other word for it. Dynamite in the middle overs, bril- liant in the field. Sri Lanka thrashed; South Africa too. In the semis with a game to spare. Bonkers. (And, I imag- ine, more than a little annoying if you paid £70 to watch them against Australia; a series that became a fort- night-long party political broadcast for the Scrap ODIs Coaltion.) When Sri Lanka played South Africa in the Group B opener, Ian Chappell described the match as a passport to the semis. Because England, he reasoned, were so bad, so pathetic, that the Lankans and the Proteas were guaranteed two points. Often, when pundits are so spectac- ularly wrong, it’s tempting to snigger. But really, what else was he supposed to say? That Owais Shah can clear the ropes like Yuvraj Singh? That Eoin Morgan is the new Michael Bevan? That England are always dangerous on the big stage, are natural and inno- vative one-day players and should never be written off ? Chappell was simply calling it as we all saw it. England were pathetic against Australia. Their two big hit- ters are still limping around on crutches. With the odd exception, South African wicket keeper, Mark Boucher watches closely as England’s Owais they’ve been a shocking one-day side Shah faces the bowling of South African bowler JP Duminy during the Champions for years.

  • Junior Convenor's Report Season 2017 Was Yet
Junior Convenor's report Season 2017 was yet another season blighted by wet weather. Despite there being just under 80 junior matches scheduled (or rescheduled in many instances) only 49 – or under two-thirds – were actually completed. It is a cliché, we know, however the west of Scotland weather remains the single biggest uncontrollable for the club as it looks to facilitate both practice and playing opportunities for its junior players. Cancellations aside, it is however pleasing that with six age-group hardball sides, excluding our Under 10 Kwik Cricket'ers, there were, again, many opportunities provided for the club's juniors to play matches. And running in parallel to these playing opportunities were year-round coaching and practice sessions, led in the main by the club's South African Coach Jurie Snyman who remained in Glasgow over the winter period between seasons 2016 and 2017. The continuity of coaching that this represented is, I believe, extremely valuable and its benefits were seen in the development of many of our young players. Indoor practice took place weekly over the winter, doubling to twice-weekly in the three months leading up to the start of the season, sessions being held at Hutchesons' Grammar School Sports Hall. Talk of "Hutchie" leads me to the club's participation in the WDJCU "Indoor Super 8s" tournament over the Christmas and New Year period. The club entered sides in each of the three age-groups: Under 12, 15 and 19. The club's Under 12s and Under 19s both made it to their respective Finals Day, albeit neither managing to secure tournament wins.

WINNERS AND LOSERS IN THE INDIAN CRICKET AUCTIONS The Indian Premier League’s Twenty20 competition has taken the cricket world by storm. The players, auctioned to the business and media groups granted franchises by the IPL, are getting $50,000 to $1.5m for six weeks’ play. Our analysis suggests the process has resulted in both bargains and bonanzas: that (apart from the superstars) batsmen have done relatively poorly, while the youngest Indian cricketers have done exceptionally well; and that some of England’s cricketers may have earned six-figure sums had they participated. The IPL – a new league formed to play Twenty20 cricket in India – has had a bigger impact on cricket power structures and player salaries than anything since the Packer revolution in the late 1970s. Twenty20 cricket is a recently introduced, frenetic and exciting variant. A complete game takes about three hours, compared with the five days for traditional Test matches, or the full single day for one-day internationals (ODIs). Twenty20 cricket rewards explosive power and quick thinking; Test cricket rewards patience, discipline and concentration. Æ 2 Frontier Economics | June 2008 RULES OF THE GAME In January, the IPL auctioned eight team-owning franchises to business and media groups, who paid US$67m-US$112m for the privilege. However, media rights, to be shared across the franchisees, have been sold for over $1bn.

ITV buys IPL cricket rights Broadcaster to air 59 live matches on ITV4 from mid-March • Mark Sweney • guardian.co.uk, Thursday 4 March 2010 08.14 GMT Indian Premier League: Balachandra Akhil of Royal Challengers. Photograph: Luigi Bennett/Sports Inc/PA Photos Cricket is to return to ITV for the first time in more than 30 years after the broadcaster acquired rights to this year's Indian Premier League competition. The deal will see the broadcaster air 59 of 60 live matches on ITV4. The IPL starts on 12 March and runs for 45 days. Coverage will be presented by Matt Smith with Bollywood actress and presenter Mandira Bedi who hosted Cricket World Cup coverage in India. The IPL will also have a specialist section on the ITV.com website and has the right to webcast matches. The tournament will be supported by a prominent marketing campaign on ITV. In the UK, the rights were previously held by pay-TV service Setanta, which collapsed last year. The missing match is likely to be the second of two on Sunday 4 April, Delhi Daredevils vs Bangalore Royal Challengers in Delhi. This clashes with British Touring Car racing from Thruxton, which ITV4 had already committed to show. In January, YouTube struck a deal to webcast live IPL matches globally. The IPL, which is an eight-team tournament of Twenty20 cricket, includes players such as Sachin Tendulkar, Shane Warne, Jacques Kallis and Chris Gayle. English players participating in this season's tournament include Kevin Pietersen, Eoin Morgan, Ravi Bopara and Owais Shah.

The NatWest Series 2001 CONTENTS Tuesday12June 2 Match review – England v Australia 4 Fixtures, regulations & umpires 3 Match preview – England v Pakistan 5 2001 NatWest series results + One day Pressure mounts records for England AUSTRALIA have already stamped their authority all over The NatWest Series after two outstanding displays at the weekend. Steve Waugh’s men eased to a seven- wicket triumph against Pakistan at Cardiff on Saturday, and then showed more bat- ting brilliance and composure to overhaul England’s impressive total of 268 for four at Bristol on Sunday. Opening their campaign with a double vic- tory has left any critics questioning Australia’s status as the one-day kings eating their words. Ricky Ponting claimed both man of the match awards with two outstanding dis- plays at the crease. First, he rifled a quick- fire 70 to give his side the early impetus they needed against Pakistan, then cracked 102 as the tourists timed their response against England to perfection, edging past their total with three balls to spare. Now England and Pakistan clash at Lord’s, knowing defeat - especially for the so-far pointless hosts - would leave keeping pace with Australia an uphill task. England drew comfort from the impressive displays of Ben Hollioake and Owais Shah after losing their opening exchange of the summer with the Aussies. The defeat against the world champions was England’s seventh successive loss and equalled their worst ever results sequence at one-day international level, recorded in 1993 and during the build-up to the last World Cup. At Bristol, Ben Hollioake and Owais Shah added a crucial 70 from 45 deliveries to propel England to a competitive total.

  • Junior Convenor's Report Poloc Cricket Club AGM, October 2014
Junior Convenor's Report Poloc Cricket Club AGM, October 2014 Season 2014, though finished, is still fresh in most memories. It was a second consecutive season in which the weather was kind to us, and as a result lots of cricket was played. Before reporting on the season's events, a brief word on some decisions taken before a ball was bowled. In recent years the club has entered junior sides in every competition, both league and cup, local and national, open to it. This included what are called the B Leagues. These leagues, for us as a club, gave our junior players additional opportunities to play midweek twenty-over matches, around ten or so a season perhaps. Over the winter, the decision was taken, however, to make a change in this regard, and instead of entering teams in the B Leagues, an Academy XI was entered in to the senior Evening League (T20) and senior Sunday League (40 overs-a-side). This change would see our youngsters face stiffer competition, as well as play more matches in a longer format of the game. This decision, I believe, was the right one as the club continues to develop its young players, as well as look to maximise the number and variety of matches in which juniors can play. Also by way of background, the junior winter programme – which again started just a month after the outdoor season ended, and ran weekly throughout the winter months – was both well attended, and – I believe – beneficial to our youngsters' development, as well as useful in attracting new juniors.
