A Comparative Analysis of Artist Prints and Print Collecting at the Imperial War Museum and Australian War M
Bold Impressions: A Comparative Analysis of Artist Prints and Print Collecting at the Imperial War Museum and Australian War Memorial Alexandra Fae Walton A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the Australian National University, June 2017. © Copyright by Alexandra Fae Walton, 2017 DECLARATION PAGE I declare that this thesis has been composed solely by myself and that it has not been submitted, in whole or in part, in any previous application for a degree. Except where stated otherwise by reference or acknowledgement, the work presented is entirely my own. Acknowledgements I was inspired to write about the two print collections while working in the Art Section at the Australian War Memorial. The many striking and varied prints in that collection made me wonder about their place in that museum – it being such a special yet conservative institution in the minds of many Australians. The prints themselves always sustained my interest in the topic, but I was also fortunate to have guidance and assistance from a number of people during my research, and to make new friends. Firstly, I would like to say thank you to my supervisors: Dr Peter Londey who gave such helpful advice on all my chapters, and who saw me through the final year of the PhD; Dr Kylie Message who guided and supported me for the bulk of the project; Dr Caroline Turner who gave excellent feedback on chapters and my final oral presentation; and also Dr Sarah Scott and Roger Butler who gave good advice from a prints perspective. Thank you to Professor Joan Beaumont, Professor Helen Ennis and Professor Diane Davis from the Australian National University (ANU) for making the time to discuss my thesis with me, and for their advice. -

Kobro Ing.Pdf
KATARZYNA KOBRO & WŁADYSŁAW STRZE MIŃ KOBRO STRZEAVANT-GARDE PROTOTYPES ŃSKI atarzyna Kobro (1898–1951) and Władysław Strzemiński (1893–1952) are among the silent protagonists of the Eu- ropean avant-gardes, to which they contributed by both fostering and questioning the legacy of modernism with a plastic and theoretical oeuvre that was as fertile as it was Kcomplex. Dedicated to experimentation on pure forms—Kobro funda- mentally in sculpture and Strzemiński in painting—and closely related to international artistic movements like the Bauhaus, neoplasticism and constructivism, their work is pivotal for an understanding of abstract art in the Central Europe of the first decades of the twentieth century. The Museo Reina Sofía presents a retrospective on their work made up of drawings, paintings, collages, sculptures and designs ranging from the typographical arrangement of a poem to furnishing concepts or the projection of architectural spaces. With exhibits dating from the early 1920s to the late 1940s, the show functions as an exegesis of their heterogeneous production through a description of the artistic transi- tions that marked their careers. Clearly influenced at first by such great avant-garde figureheads as Tatlin, Rodchenko and Malevich, their work moves on to their unist creations, their great contribution. Unism was abandoned with the arrival of the economic crisis, and after a period dedicated to an art they classed as “recreational” and, simultaneously, to the practice of functionalism, Kobro and Strzemiński took different paths. At the end of the Second World War, she made sculptures of nudes close to cubism, while he started to sketch out a realist theory ver- tebrated by works where afterimages live side by side with abstraction. -
AN ACADEMIC FACING THE WOMEN'S ART: JOSÉ FRANCÉS AND HIS ARTISTIC YEARBOOK (1915-1926) Abstract The art critic and member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, José Frances, also known as “Silvio Lago”, wrote for 11 consecutive years The Artistic Year, an annual summary of the Spanish artistic events between 1915 and 1926, which came to be declared of public utility in 1924 and translated into several languages. In this almost encyclopedic work, the critic named 175 female active artists in Spain during the period indicated, but only wrote critical essays about 14 of them. -
