Carm. * The word Carmel virtually defines the religious family that calls itself the Carmelite Order. It is a geographical designation (as in also Carthusian and Cistercian), not a person's name like Francis, Dominic and the Servite Seven Holy Founders. In the Church's calendar, Carmel is one of three Marian sites celebrated liturgically, along with Lourdes and St. Mary Major. It may be asked: Who founded the Carmelites on Mount Carmel?     VOWS IN THE SECULAR ORDER OF DISCALCED CARMELITES Fr. Michael Buckley, OCD The moment we hear the word “Vows” we think automatically of religious. The “vows of religion” is a phrase that comes immediately to our minds: vows and religion are always associated in our thinking. Indeed, for religious men and women, vows of poverty, chastity and obedience are of the very essence of their vocation. Regularly vows are made after novitiate, and again a few years later; the only difference is between simple (temporary) and solemn (perpetual) vows. So it is a new concept when we encounter vows in the context of a Secular Order as we do in Carmel. Yet, the exclusive association of vows with religious people is not warranted. A glance at the Canon Law of the Church will illustrate this. The Canon Law speaks about vows in numbers 1191-98, just before a chapter on oaths. Our Secular legislation makes no reference to the Canon Law when it speaks about vows. That is not necessarily a defect or lacuna in our Constitutions. Our legislation is in accord with sacred canons, but it is essential to be familiar with these. Let me summarize the chapter. It begins with a precise definition: “A vow is a deliberate and free promise made to God concerning a possible and better good which must be fulfilled by reason of the virtue of religion.” Then it goes on to distinguish vows which are a) public, i.e., accepted in the name of the church, b) solemn or simple, c) personal or real, d) how vows cease or are dispensed, etc.

    Who are the Secular Franciscans, and what do they do? The Secular Franciscan Order is a vocation, a Way of Life approved by the Church, for men and women, married or single, who are called to take an active part in the mission of Christ to bring "the good news of salvation" to the world. Secular Franciscans commit themselves to a life in Christ calling for a positive effort to promote Gospel attitudes among their contemporaries. They are united with each other in communities, through which they develop a sense of direction according to the Gospel spirit of Saint Francis of Assisi. FRANCIS, the saint known and loved the world over, was born at Assisi, central Italy, in the year 1181, the son of a wealthy merchant. He died there in 1226, after a life in Christ that earned him the title Poverelo (little poor man). As a youth, Francis had a series of powerful incidents of conversion, including a vision in which Jesus told him to "rebuild my church, for it is falling into ruin." He found Jesus in the poor and suffering, especially the lepers. He and his followers became visible exemplars of a literal Christian life. In the words of Pope Pius XI, "So lifelike and strikingly did the image of Jesus Christ and the Gospel manner of life shine forth in Francis, that he appeared to his contemporaries almost as though he were the Risen Christ." Saint Francis attained this marvelous ideal by making the holy Gospel, in every detail, the rule and standard of his life.

    Constitutions of Discalced Carmelite Secular Order This is the text of the Constitutions approved by the General Definitory in March 2003 and presented to the General Chapter in Avila. This text was approved by the Holy See on June 16, 2003. Amendments III-B Fraternal Communion, 31a and 58j concerning St. Joseph were approved by the Holy See on January 7, 2014. Preface All are called to share, in charity, the holiness which belongs to God alone: “You must therefore be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Mt 5:48). Following Christ is the way to attain perfection, open to all by baptism. Through Baptism we take part in the triple mission of Jesus: kingly, priestly and prophetic. The first is a commitment to transforming the world according to God’s design. By the priestly mission, the baptized person offers self and the whole of creation to the Father with Christ, guided by the Holy Spirit. And as prophet, the bap- tized person announces God’s plan for human kind and denounces all that is contrary to it[1]. The great Teresian Carmelite family is present in the world in many forms. The nucleus of this family is the Order of Discalced Carmel- ites: the friars, the enclosed nuns, the seculars. It is the one Order with the same charism. The Order is nourished by the long tradition of Carmel, expressed in the Rule of Saint Albert and the doctrine of the Carmelite Doctors of the Church and the Order’s other saints. The present OCDS Constitutions are the fundamental law for its members, present in different regions of the world.

A The Catholic Church includes hundreds of religious communities. The priests, religious brothers, religious sisters, and nuns of these communities (which are often referred to as “religious orders”) are committed to particular spiritual traditions and often to a particular charism (such as teaching, healthcare, social work, or pastoral care). To help identify a person as a member of a particular religious community, the custom developed of including post-nominal letters that provide a sort of shorthand for the name of the community that the priest, brother, sister or nun is part of. So, for example OSB after a person’s name would indicate that they are a member of the Order of St. Benedict (the Benedictines), just as SJ would indicate that a priest or brother is a member of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) or RSM would show that a woman is a Sister of Mercy.   • European Meeting of the Discalced Carmelite Formators
    342 03.2019 Meeting in Egypt t the end of December, the traditional meet- ing of Bishops and Patriarchs took place in Cairo, Egypt. Several topics concerning the Asituation of Christians in that country were dis- cussed. They also, as do our brothers in the faith, sometimes suffer the persecution that currently hammers the Middle East. The Delegate General of the Discalced Carmelites for Egypt, Father Patrizio Sciadini, attended as president of the confederation of religious residing in that country. Let us pray for our brothers and sisters who continue proclaiming the Gospel in those lands. Bishop Gonzalo del Castillo Crespo, OCD, has died orn in La Paz, Bolivia, on September 20th, 1936, he made his profession in the Discalced Carmel and received the name Gonzalo de BJesús María on February 10th, 1957. He was ordained to the priesthood on October 21st, 1963, and on January 7th, 1985, he was consecrated bishop. From 2000, he held the office of Military Bishop of Bolivia. He was currently the Military Bishop Emeritus and resided in a community of Discalced Carmelites – Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish – in La Paz. He had been ill for several months, and on January 14th slipped into a coma and died a few hours later. Bishop Gonzalo was outstanding for his closeness to the armed forces, migrants, and refugees. His death caused great lament in the Bolivian see as well as among civil and military authorities that have ex- pressed their condolences to the Bolivian Carmel. His funeral was celebrated on January 16th, Cardinal Toribio P. Ticona presiding, and numerous bishops concelebrated.

    Turkish Historical Review 2 (2011) 125–154 brill.nl/thr Malta and the study of Arabic in the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries Carmel Cassar * Abstract Th e Holy See became aware of the potential evangelising role of the Maltese in Ottoman lands at least from the mid-sixteenth century. Th is had much to do with Malta’s geographical proxim- ity to North Africa, coupled with the ability of the Maltese to speak a native Semitic language, believed to be close to Arabic, while at the same time being fervently Catholic Christians. Malta was singled out for this role mainly because the majority of Levantine Christian communities, then largely under Ottoman rule, were known to speak some form of Arabic. Th e combination of these factors appeared to be an excellent combination of circumstances to the Catholic Church authorities in Rome who believed that Malta was ideally suited for the teaching of Arabic. In Rome there was a general belief that the establishment of a school of Arabic in Malta, would help make the Catholic Church more accessible to the Christians of the Levant. However, despite continuous eff orts, throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, by the Holy Congregation of Propaganda Fide, the teaching of Arabic never really took off in Malta. Under British colonial administration, in the early nineteenth century, Arabic remained on the list of subjects taught at the University of Malta and was later introduced at the Lyceum and the Valletta Government School. Th e British colonial authorities may even have encouraged its teaching and for a brief time, in the mid-nineteenth century, the well known Lebanese scholar Ahmad Faris al-Shidyaq, was lecturer of Arabic at Valletta.
