THE PAPERS OF CELIA FILE Mrs. H.C. File

Celia B. File was born Celia Vandervoort in 1887, the daughter of Charles Wilbur Vandervoort (1864-1943) and Frances Roblin Vandervoort. Her mother died in 1894 and her father remarried twice (1) Mary E. Watts (1869-1923) and (2) Hattie Miller (1868-1950). At one t im e, her father was Sheriff of Lennox and Addington. Celia graduated as a teacher in 1905, but positions were scarce for the novice. She accepted a position teaching on the Mohawk Reserve in Deseronto. At that ti me, the Moh awks were having difficulty encouraging teachers to come to the Reserve. She never regretted this decision and for t he rest of her life was deeply interested and involved with Native history and issues. In 1908 she married Herbert Clifton File (1883-1963). Although their different careers brought per iod s apart, the marriage was a happy one. They had noArchives children. In 1926, Celia File entered Queen's University, where she successfully earned her Bachelor's Degree . At the urging of Duncan McArthur, she did not go on to the College of Education as she had intended but continued her studies for a Masters degree. This she achieved and was subsequently hired by the Napanee Collegiate at a good salary due to her qualifications and enthusiastic testimonials. Then came the depression. Her timeCounty at Napanee Collegiate ended on a sour note. The school board, having twice reduced teachers' salaries, determined that Mrs. File was too expensive. A period of illness at the start of the teaching year was used as an excuse, and when Mrs. File appealed to theL&A Teachers' Federation for support, she was branded as having a bad attitude. The firing by the Napanee Board in 1941 severely damaged Mrs. File's teaching career. She was forced by financial necessity to leave her husband and accept a post in Oil Springs in Western . She taught at Oil Springs, Alviston and Thamesville, where she was school principal . During her stay in Oil Springs, a fire destroyed the entire contents of her apartment, including her manuscript book on Molly Brant. She never found the energy to re-write the book. On the closing of the Thamesville School, Celia Fi l e returned to Napanee. Herbert File was working at a canning factory near Deseronto. Her old age seems to have been a continual cycle of financial necessity. Despite this, - 1.1 - she was able to enjoy her favourite hobby - gardening. This hobby brought in some extra income when The Napanee Beaver hired her to write a gardening co lum n. The 1950 1 S were a period of growth of the Native rights movement. Celia File was also hired by the Belleville Intelligencer, but this time because of her contacts on the Mohawk Reserve. She also continued her research into her own and her husband 1 s family, and was involved with the Historical Society, the Society for the Mentally Retarded, the County Hosptial Building Committee and other local activities. Celia File enjoyed a life-long friendship with Bernice Loft Winslow, poet of the Mohawks . She was also an acquaintance of C.W. Jefferys, Orval Madden and Wallace Havelock Robb. When she and Herbert celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1958, the Robbs were guests of honour . Celia File lived to become a well-known and honoured citizen of Napanee . She died in 1973.
