Newspaper Coverage on Methadone Maintenance Therapy (MMT) in Berita Harian and Harian Metro NEWSPAPER COVERAGE ON METHADONE MAINTENANCE THERAPY (MMT) IN BERITA HARIAN AND HARIAN METRO Siti Hajar Abd Aziz1, Noor Mayudia Mohd Mothar2 & Shahril Anuar Abdul Ghalim3 ABSTRACT Methadone Maintenance Therapy (MMT) is a programme launched by government in year 2005 to target heroin addicts, but scepticism still prevails on this unorthodox treatment method. The public misconceived the treatment as just another alternative to meet the addiction habits. Question arose whether the media has given enough coverage to the programme and whether the newspapers have been supportive in term of writing style and the information offered in the news. Therefore, the paper will examine the contents of news on methadone as reported by Berita Harian and Harian Metro in year 2008 and 2009 to determine their level of support on the MMT programme. The study found out that there is still a lacking in coverage on the MMT programme by these newspapers whereby only 35 news articles on methadone were published by both newspapers throughout the two years. Although small in number, Berita Harian has focused their news to create awareness on the therapy drug, using the ministry representatives and health practitioners as the official sources. Harian Metro, however, preferred to represent methadone in the form of crime news, and using enforcement bodies as their sources. Therefore methadone programme did suffer from this stereotype of news values practised by most tabloid newspapers.

  • Selective Exposure to Berita Harian Online and Utusan Malaysia Online: the Roles of Surveillance Motivation, Website Usability and Website Attractiveness
SEARCH: The Journal of the South East Asia Research centre ISSN 2229-872X for Communications and Humanities. Vol. 6 No. 2, 2014, pp 25-45 Selective Exposure to Berita Harian Online and Utusan Malaysia Online: The Roles of Surveillance Motivation, Website Usability and Website Attractiveness Nur Azimah Zulkafli Bahiyah Omar Nor Hazlina Hashim School of Communication, Universiti Sains Malaysia © The Author(s) 2014. This article is published with open access by Taylor’s Press. ABSTRACT News media allows audiences to be selective in determining both their news sources and type of news stories they read. This study examined factors influencing selective exposure to the online editions of two mainstream Malaysian newspapers, Berita Harian and Utusan Malaysia. Using selective exposure theory as the theoretical lens, this study compared both newspapers in terms of their audiences’ level of surveillance motivation, and how audiences rate the newspapers’ websites with respect to usability and attractiveness. This study used a within-subject experimental research design that exposed 51 subjects to both Berita Harian and Utusan Malaysia online newspapers. The results of the experiment indicate that Berita Harian and Utusan Malaysia online were significantly different in terms of website usability; however, no significant differences were found in terms of surveillance motivation or website attractiveness between the two newspapers. Further analysis indicate that the only significant predictor of selective exposure was website usability. This study highlights the importance of website usability for online newspapers wanting to harness audience selectivity. Keywords: Selective exposure, online newspapers, surveillance motivation, website usability, website attractiveness 1. INTRODUCTION News media began to have an online presence during the mid-1990s.

Nichols Professor of Mass Communications Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School iii ABSTRACT This study examines how socio-political blogs contribute to the development of democracy in Malaysia. It suggests that blogs perform three main functions, which help make a democracy more meaningful: blogs as fifth estate, blogs as networks, and blogs as platform for expression. First, blogs function as the fifth estate performing checks-and-balances over the government. This function is expressed by blogs’ role in the dissemination of information, providing alternative perspectives that challenge the dominant frame, and setting of news agenda. The second function of blogs is that they perform as networks. This is linked to the social-networking aspect of the blogosphere both online and offline. Blogs also have the potential to act as mobilizing agents. The mobilizing capability of blogs facilitated the mass street protests, which took place in late- 2007 and early-2008 in Malaysia.

Newspaper sales dip post-GE13 MalaysiaKini.com Sept 29, 2013 The readership of top newspapers in the country tumbled in the run up to the 13th general election over reporting perceived as biased. According to The Edge Weekly, which obtained the Consumer and Media View report by Nielsen, newspapers saw a drop of between 10 percent to 40 percent in readership during the second quarter of this year. This coincided with the 13th general election period when Parliament was dissolved on April 3 and polling day was on May 5. "The decline is mainly due to the 13th general election,"The Edge Weekly quoted Omnicom Media Group Malaysia chief executive officer Andreas Vogiatzakis as saying. He was further quoted as saying that readers sought alternative news between March to May this year with a 60 percent surge in online traffic for political news sites and 20 percent increase for news websites in general. According to The Edge Weekly, media analysts noted that people were upset with the mainstream newspapers owned or indirectlly controlled by BN because of lopsided coverage and incessant demonising of the opposition. However, they noted that newspaper readership may bounce back when the anger subsides. berita harian star new strait times newspaper coverage on bersih 3.0 rallyAmong the English language dailies, The Star's readership fell 19.8 percent from 1.286 million to 1.032 million while New Straits Times managed a marginal increase of four percent from 277,000 to 288,000. • The Construction, Deconstruction, and Reconstruction of Crime News: a Case Study of Malaysian Newspapers
Vol. 18. No.1 (2021) 171-186. ISSN: 1823-884x THE CONSTRUCTION, DECONSTRUCTION, AND RECONSTRUCTION OF CRIME NEWS: A CASE STUDY OF MALAYSIAN NEWSPAPERS Azman Azwan Azmawati, Muhammad Raqib Mohd Sofian, Shuhaida Md Noor & Juliana Abdul Wahab ABSTRACT Mass media has become an important agent of socialization by reproducing dominant and other social norms, beliefs, discourses, ideologies, and values. Although the media can be considered as an educator, most of the transmission of norms, beliefs, ideologies, discourses, and values occur in an unconscious manner. In essence, the media will select and process facts for the public. Because they do this so systematically, they can affect the way their audience is influenced by the delivered information. Thus, the portrayal of crime in the news media has played a crucial role in creating public awareness and planting seeds of concern regarding crimes in Malaysia. How crime is presented in the media and how the media capitalizes on crime news can affect how society perceives crime. The presentation of crime news in the media is the result of a complex process of news gathering and news production. Hence, it is crucial to understand how crime news is produced and presented, and the impact this type of news has on society. It will in turn help to shape public opinion and public policy, which could consequently become a national concern. This paper presents an analysis of the hidden messages that the media is forwarding to society and the priorities given in constructing crime news in the local media. This study has analyzed news texts to understand how different types of crimes are covered and reported.

DESCRIPTORS *Broadcast Industry; *Chinese;:idhinese Culture; *History; *Mass Media; News Media; *Newspapers; News 'Reporting; Periodicals; Publications; Radio; Television IDENTIFIERS *Malaysia ABSTRACT The traditions of the Chinese press in Malaysia go back 160 years to Malaysia's first Chinese-language newspaper, considered by.scholars as the first modern periodical anywhere. Since then, this press has aided Christian missionary efforts in China and Southeast Asia, helped develop permanent Chinese communities in the Malay peninsula, called for both reformist and revolutionary movements in China, fought against the Japanese during World War and supported the formation of a Malaysian state--all thewhile trying to retain valuable aspects of Chinese culture. Currently, the Malaysian Chinese community is served by 26 newspapers (23 are dailies), a few local magazihes, a Chinese section of Radio Malaysia, and a daily Chinese newscast and limited drama ontelevision. Readership of Chinese papers is the highest of any ethnic press in the couhtty. In the future, most of the Chinese papers, falling under the ownership of Alliance government parties, will have to report according to government standards and, while Chinese broadcastscould be diminished because of language restrictions, it would be a long time before Chinese would be discarded as a broadcast language.
