We know that Meriwether Lewis collected some herbarium specimens that contributed to Pursh's Flora during the Lewis and Clark Expedition of1804-1806. FRIEDMAN Brooklyn College and the Graduate School of CUNY and Northeastern Science Foundation affiliated with Brooklyn College-CUNY 15 Third Street,Box 746 Troy, N.Y. 12181-0746 INTRODUCTION Located along the Helderberg Escarpment this classic site is on hallowed ground. Amos Eaton (1776-1842), Ebenezer Emmons (1799-1863), James Hall (1811-1898), William W Mather (1804-1859), Sir Charles Lyell (1797-1875), Benjamin Silliman (1779-1864), James D. Dana (1813-1895), Louis Agassiz (1807-1873), and Sir William E. Logan (1798-1875) have trod here before you, and we will view the memorial plaque erected in their honor. The field sites expose a large variety of Lower and Middle Devonian limestones, including coral reefs, stroma toporoid reefs, storm deposits, stromatolite facies, skeletal- and lime mud facies, solution-collapse features, and karst. This diversity of facies will be studied in terms of trans gressive-regressive cycles, known as parasequences, which are defined as confonnab/e succes sions of genetically-related beds bounded by surfaces of erosion, called parasequence surfaces. HISTORY OF GEOLOGY Before viewing the sequence stratigraphy of the Devonian we will pay tribute to the founders of American geology on whose concepts modern geology has built. Among those particular attention will be given to Amos Eaton, James Hall, and Ebenezer Emmons, whose debt we have incurred as builders of our science and at whose graves we will pay our respects. -

Friedman Department of Geology, Rensselaer Polyteclmic Institute Troy, New York 12181 Geology is a tradition at Rensselaer. As R.P. Baker (1930) assessed the first one hundred years of the history of R.P.I., he emphasized "in Geology and Mineralogy, of course, Rensselaer was long supreme. Fran those connected with the Institute came the first standard texts -- the first, you may be interested to know, in which figures and plates were used to supplement the text -- and from them also came the first epoch - making re p::>rts. Indeed, approx:imately half of the notable developnents in these two subjects before 1850 were due to graduates of the Institute. They were resp::>nsible for the official surveys of Alabama, Delaware, Iowa, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Michigan and Wisconsin. In other states their advice and assistance were hardly less useful. M:>reover, in a number of colleges and endc:Med universities as well as in the State univer sities of Alabama, Iowa, Michigan and \'lisconsin, they established a tradi tion of research, which has been honorably maintained by their successors. " The founder and first senior professor of Rensselaer Amos Eaton has been acclailred as the Father of Alrerican Geology (Fig. 1) . Hence geology was allotted praninence early at Rensselaer, as s'hc:1.vn on a circular of 1827, which reads "it is now required that each stu dent take two short mineral ogical tours to collect minerals for his own use, for the purp::>se of improving himself in the science of mineralogy and geology. -

Introduction The purpose of this group of essays and formal papers is to focus attention on some aspects of bibliography in the service of natural history, and possibly to stimulate further studies which may be of mutual usefulness to biologists and historians of science, and also to librarians and museum curators. Bibli• ography is interpreted rather broadly to include botanical illustration. Further, the intent and style of the contributions reflects the occasion—a meeting of bookmen, scientists and scholars assembled not only to discuss specific examples of the uses of books and manuscripts in the natural sciences, but also to consider some other related matters in a spirit of wit and congeniality. Thus we hope in this volume, as in the conference itself, both to inform and to please. When Edwin Wolf, 2nd, Librarian of the Library Company of Phila• delphia, and then Chairman of the Rare Books Section of the Association of College and Research Libraries, asked me to plan the Section's program for its session in Lawrence, June 25-27, 1964, we agreed immediately on a theme. With few exceptions, we noted, the bibliography of natural history has received little attention in this country, and yet it is indispensable to many biologists and to historians of the natural sciences. -

The Parallel Impacts of William Maclure and Amos Eaton on American Geology, Education, and Public Service Markes E. Johnson” Two independent centers of education were established simul- taneously during the early part of the nineteenth century by William Maclure in southern Indiana and by Amos Eaton in eastern New York. Geology was only one of many sciences thereby promoted local- ly. A commanding role, however, was eventually played by these cen- ters in shaping the intersection of public service and applied or practical geology that survives today under the authority of state and federal agencies responsible for geological exploration and sur- vey work. Maclure was thirteen years senior to Eaton in age. Although from different generations and from different family backgrounds, both were attracted to geology as self-taught individuals. At best, these two geologists and educators shared only the most attenuated connections, but they both operated under the guiding influence of larger tendencies in American life to make science a public servant of humanity. In his massive 1924 compilation on The First One Hundred Years ofAmerican Geology, George P. Menill devotes the fmt two chap- ters to the “Maclurean Era, 1785-1819” and the “Eatonian Era, 1820-1829.”’ The exploits of these two hardy pioneers are intellec- tually as well as physically monumental. Two of their achievements are particularly noteworthy. Maclure produced the first geological map and texts in 1809 and 1817 summarizing much of the eastern half of North America, an accomplishment derived from thousands of miles of personal exploration on foot. Eaton produced a geographically more constrained but more detailed geological cross section and syn- thesis in 1824 following the route of the Erie Canal across New York state. -

NOTES ON ERIOGONUM — III ON THE STATUS OF ERIOGONUM PAUCIFLORUM PURSH James L. Reveal '• - In 1814, Fredrick Pursh published in the appendix to his Flora Americae Septentrionalis, several interesting and new taxa that had been collected in North America by John Bradbury. Among the new species was Eriogonum pauciflorum. In the spring of 1966, for a history class, I reviewed Susan Delano McKelvey's book. Botanical Exploration of the Trans-Mississippi West, 1790-1850, and realized that the range of E. pauciflorum, as understood by the Great Plains and Rocky Mountain botanists did not get near the Missouri River, nor into North Dakota where Bradbury (1817) stated that he made his collection. To these botanists, the epithet E. pauciflorum referred to a plant of southeastern Wyoming and adjacent northern Colorado. Through the kindness of Dr. -
