This seminar examines JAY-Z from different perspectives as an artist and as a businessman. The seminar will discuss perspectives and beliefs about rap music and popular culture. JAY-Z is currently one of the most influential iconic figures of Global Pop Culture. His music embodies the quintessentially “African American” genre of music, we will study his musical roots, trace the development of his career and connect JAY-Z with his culture. An analysis of his business empire will include his drug-marked youth, musical achievements, and urban-informed business savvy. The Seminar will discuss his lyrics and their meanings which reveal JAY-Z’s art and life. JAY-Z heavily borrows from American musical and literary traditions through an examination of select recordings, autobiography, film, essays and criticism, this Seminar will provide students the opportunity to discover the significance of JAY-Z’s contributions to lyric writing, popular music, and beyond. The following resources will facilitate students learning development by using multiple content formats. DJ Hero will engage students through gameplay, simulating DJ turntablism (mixing styles and techniques) connecting gaming activities to assignments, discussions, and projects on JAY-Z and current Rap artists. -

Those assessments took on an especially important role as Barack Obama ended his historic term as President of the United States. One could not go past an American newsstand in late 2016 and early 2017 without seeing a newspaper or magazine featuring some article discussing the signifi cance of the Obama presidency. The foci of these art- icles varied. Rolling Stone , for instance, published a special collector’s edition compiling all of the feature articles its staff had written about him. The back cover included three of the nine previous covers which featured President Obama’s photograph (see Dickinson 2017 , 7; Rolling Stone 2017 ). Time ’s special edition commissioned articles covering President Obama’s successes and failures on issues such as foreign policy, LGBT rights, and racial issues (Time 2017 ). People magazine featured a breezy interview with Barack and Michelle Obama recounting their fondest memories of their eight years in the White House (Westfall 2016 ). Many articles examined the signifi cance of President Obama as the fi rst African American 1 president. Nothing fuels my sense of patriotism quite like watching Marine One fly over Washington, DC, to and fro the White House. I know that the sight of a few huge green helicopters over head would make most anyone stop and stare; but I feel something very particular each time I watch this President, and this group of Marines, fly over the buildings and bridges of our nation’s capital city. What I feel is awe – and pride. I’m pretty sure that every time I spy one of those proud flying contraptions, no matter who is inside, I will always think of Number 43. He is, after all, my President. I was born during Carter’s Presidency, and I remember seeing Reagan when he rallied in my hometown. I was smitten with Barbara Bush and Millie the dog, and I met George H.W. Bush not long after he left the White House. Although I came of (voting) age during Clinton’s presidency, I was displeased with him and cast my first big vote for Dole. But President George W. Bush is my President, and I’m proud of it and proud of him. Still. Clearly, it is a little bit controversial to still love President Bush. I’m not naïve about all of the headlines regarding our President. He had a bold, unifying vision when he began his presidential campaign. Unfortunately, the grandeur of his plan was blurred by tragedy and necessity. When reality set in after he became President, it turned out he would have much more to deal with then he could have ever imagined. -

Politik Nummer 1 | Årgang 23 | 2020 ‘Couture military’ and a queer aesthetic curiosity: music video aesthetics, militarised fashion, and the embodied politics of stardom in Rihanna’s ‘Hard’1 Catherine Baker, Senior Lecturer in 20th Century History, Department of History, Uni- versity of Hull Music video is an underappreciated type of audiovisual artefact in studies of the aesthet- ics of world politics, which typically privilege linear narrative storytelling and struggle to communicate how sonic and embodied practices also constitute world politics as sen- sory experiences through which individuals make sense of the world. Yet the ways in which music video invites spectators’ senses to work together, and to filter meaning through their knowledge of stars’ own ‘meta-narratives’, expose an intimate and affective continuum between the politics of stardom and attachments to collective projects such as militarism. This paper explores that continuum through a study of Rihanna’s video ‘Hard’ and the aesthetic strategies it used to visualise her performance of a ‘female military masculinity’ in a fantasised space employing signifiers of US desert war. In December 2009, at the end of a year in which Rihanna had been forced into a struggle to control and redefine her public persona after being assaulted by her then partner, the second single from her image-redefining album Rated R appeared with a video proclaim- ing her resilience and invulnerability, placing her in a succession of haute-couture-styled military-themed outfits in the middle of a fantastic version of a desert war. ‘Hard’, re- leased while fans and journalists were still debating the meanings of the BDSM imagery around Rated R’s lead single ‘Russian Roulette’, asserted Rihanna’s triumphs in the mu- sic industry and the luxury they had earned her result with a defiant message to her online haters and the repeated declaration in the chorus ‘I’m so hard’. -
