Croatia can extend their two-point advantage over Italy at the top of UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying Group H when the sides meet in Split.

Previous meetings • Croatia's eight games against Italy have ended W3 D4 L1 (W0 D2 L0 in Croatia), with two of those matches at final tournaments: the 1-1 draw at UEFA EURO 2012 and a 2-1 win for Croatia at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Ibaraki, Japan. • The sides drew 1-1 in Milan in their first Group H encounter on 16 November, Ivan Perišić (15) cancelling out Antonio Candreva's opener (11). Italy are now without a victory in seven games against Croatia since a 4-0 success in their first encounter, on 5 April 1942. Form guide • Both teams are unbeaten in Group H: Croatia's record is W4 D1, while Italy's is W3 D2. • Croatia have as yet recorded only one victory at the Stadion Poljud in Split – 2-1 against Georgia in UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying; their previous nine games at the arena ended D6 L3 – one of those draws a 1-1 result against Italy in EURO '96 qualifying. • Italy are unbeaten in eight games since exiting the 2014 World Cup at the group stage (W5 D3); in the same period, Croatia's record is W6 D1 L1, their lone reverse a 2-1 home defeat by Argentina in a friendly last November. • Italy have not lost in 45 UEFA European Championship and World Cup qualifiers (W33 D12) since losing 3-1 in France in UEFA EURO 2008 qualifying on 6 September 2006. Trivia and links • A number of Croatia players are regulars, meaning club-mates could meet: - Marcelo Brozović (Croatia) played on loan this season at FC Internazionale Milano with Andrea Ranocchia (Italy). - Šime Vrsaljko (Croatia), Francesco Acerbi and Nicola Sansone (Italy) play together at US Sassuolo Calcio. - Milan Badelj (Croatia) and Manuel Pasqual (Italy) play together at ACF Fiorentina. • Croatia assistant coach Robert Kovač – brother of coach Niko Kovač – played in Italy with Juventus from 2005 to 2007; Italy goalkeeper was a team-mate in Turin. • Italy have had the better of their 14 meetings with Croatia in UEFA's youth and age-limit competitions: W7 D5 L2, though Croatia edged the most recent last month, sealing a spot at the FIFA U-17 World Cup via a play-off. • Results between Serie A teams and Croatian outfits in UEFA club competitions have been less one-sided than might be expected; the Italian clubs' record is W16 D10 L5. Those do not include ten encounters in the non-UEFA-affiliated Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, in which the Italian clubs' record was W5 D4 L1.

5 Croatia - Italy Friday 12 June 2015 - 20.45CET (20.45 local time) Match press kit Stadion Poljud, Split Head coach Niko Kovač Date of birth: 15 October 1971 Nationality: Croatian Playing career: FC Hertha 03 Berlin-Zehlendorf, Hertha BSC Berlin, Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Hamburger SV, FC Bayern München, FC Salzburg Coaching career: Croatia Under-21, Croatia • Born in Berlin to parents hailing from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kovač began his career at local side Hertha Zehlendorf before earning a move to second-tier Hertha Berlin in 1991. A defensive , he then joined Leverkusen, playing alongside younger brother Robert for the first time. • Signed for Hamburg in 1999 but was reunited with Robert when the pair were snapped up by Bayern two years later. Won a league and cup double in 2002/03 yet struggled to tie down a starting spot and returned to Hertha in 2003, subsequently ending his playing days with Salzburg. • Collected his first Croatia cap in 1996 and featured in 1998 FIFA World Cup qualifying, only for injury to rule him out of the finals. He was ever-present, though, at the 2002 World Cup and UEFA EURO 2004. He was also a fixture at the 2006 global showpiece and impressed at UEFA EURO 2008, finishing up – in 2009 – with 83 caps and 14 international goals under his belt. • Quickly turned to coaching, first overseeing Salzburg's youth side and then working as a first-team assistant. Left Salzburg in 2012 and took charge, along with brother Robert, of Croatia's U21 squad in January 2013. • Named caretaker coach of Croatia's senior team on 16 October 2013 following Igor Štimac's resignation, he penned a two-year deal the next day and oversaw a 2-0 aggregate victory over Iceland in the 2014 World Cup play-offs, Croatia bowing out in the group stage in Brazil. Antonio Conte Date of birth: 31 July 1969 Nationality: Italian Playing career: US Lecce, Juventus Coaching career: AC Siena (assistant), USD Arezzo, AS Bari, Atalanta BC, AC Siena, Juventus, Italy • A combative and versatile midfielder, Conte also weighed in with his share of goals – usually spectacular. • Made Serie A debut with hometown club Lecce aged 16 in 1985/86 but was not a regular until 1988/89 when his side returned to the top flight after two seasons away. Joined Juventus in November 1991. • Spent the next 13 seasons at Juve, later describing the famous black-and-white shirt as his "second skin". Won five league titles, the UEFA Champions League in 1995/96 and the UEFA Cup in 1992/93 in addition to triumphs in the UEFA Super Cup, Italian Cup and a European/South American Cup, wearing the captain's armband from 1996. Capped 20 times by Italy, he was part of the squads that finished runners-up at the 1994 FIFA World Cup and UEFA EURO 2000. • Started coaching career as assistant at Siena in 2005, taking over side Arezzo the following season. After leading Bari and Siena to the top flight in 2009 and 2011 respectively, he signed a two-year contract with Juventus. • Wasted no time in revamping the squad and enjoyed a debut season to remember as the Bianconeri claimed the Scudetto without losing a single game, suffering their sole defeat of the season against SSC Napoli in the final. Guided Juventus to a second successive title in 2013 and made it three in a row the following year, before stepping down in July 2014. Appointed Italy coach on a two-year deal a month later.

EURO finals: The UEFA European Championship was a four-team event in 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1976 (when the preliminary round and quarter-finals were considered part of qualifying).

From 1980 it was expanded to an eight-team finals and remained in that format in 1984, 1988 and 1992 until 1996, when the 16-team format was adopted. UEFA EURO 2016 was the first tournament to be played as a 24-team finals.

Records of inactive countries A number of UEFA associations have been affected by dissolution or splits of member associations. For statistical purposes, the records of these inactive countries have been allocated elsewhere: therefore, all Soviet Union matches are awarded to Russia; all West Germany – but not East Germany – matches are awarded to Germany; all Yugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro matches are awarded to Serbia; all Czechoslovakia matches are allocated to both the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Abandoned/forfeited matches For statisical purposes, when a match has been started and then abandoned but later forfeited, the result on the pitch at the time of abandonment is counted. Matches that never started and were either cancelled or forfeited are not included in the overall statistics.
