JUNE 2012 Lynnwood Link Extension Extending light rail from Northgate to Lynnwood Sound Transit is preparing to extend light rail from Northgate to Lynnwood, which voters approved as part of the Sound Transit 2 Plan in 2008 along with funding to continue planning future service all the way to Everett. This project relies on competing for and receiving significant federal funding. Based on results of environmental scoping and community input received over several months in 2011, the Sound Transit Board took a major step by confirming that light rail is the best mode of transit and Interstate 5 is the right corridor to study based on ridership, travel times, service levels and cost. As we begin environmental review of potential alignments and station options, public involvement is key for a successful project. Sound Transit also is gathering input from local jurisdictions including the cities of Seattle, Shoreline, Mountlake Terrace, Edmonds and Lynnwood as well as King and Snohomish counties. This spring, the Sound Transit Board identified the route and station options to examine more closely in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) process.
