Johns Island County Park Concert Series: Mystic Vibrations Johns Island County Park at Show Area Saturday, June 5, 6 – 9:30 p.m. Charleston County Parks is hosting a reggae music night concert at Johns Island County Park. 10x10 squares will be available on a first come, first served basis upon arrival. No more than four guests are allotted per square. You are encouraged to bring your own tables and chairs to set up in your square. Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series Race #2 James Island County Park Sunday, June 20, 7 – 11 a.m. Celebrating its 30th year, this five-race series includes a 600 yard swim, a 12-mile bike ride, and a 5K run. Participants are divided into: Open / Elite, Age Group and Masters, Clydesdale (men 220 pounds or greater under the age of 40), Masters Clydesdale (men 220 pounds or greater over the age of 40), and Athena (women 165 pounds or greater). Practical Coastal Kayak Navigation Melton Peter Demetre Park (640 Wampler Dr, Charleston, SC 29412) Thursday, June 10, 6 - 8 p.m. and Sunday, June 13, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. This course introduces you to the basics of coastal navigation. We will use a mix of land based and on water exercises to look at the skills required to safely plan trips along the South Carolina coastline. The basics of maps and charts, compasses, aids to navigation, declination/variation, and rules of the nautical road will be covered. As time and interest allow, we will touch on more advanced navigational skills such as dead reckoning, range lines, fixes, following bearings, triangulation, and compensating for the current. Lighthouse Inlet Bird Walk Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve Friday, June 11, 8:30 – 10:30 a.m. This walk focuses on the incredibly diverse northeast end of Folly Island. Once the home of a Coast Guard station, this Heritage Preserve protects maritime forest, beach, dune, and marsh habitats for wildlife.
