No.: 9523560543 #Professor and Head, University Department of English, LN Mithila University, Darbhanga The short stories of the nineteenth century French writers Gustave Flaubert and Guy de Maupassant deeply influenced and helped to define the short story as a distinct and serious genre with its own protocols, techniques and interests. Maupassant is considered one of the fathers of the modern short story, who shares a number of literary qualities with his mentor Gustave Flaubert. Both men aspired to great meticulous and their works noted for their truthful characterization, psychological complexity, ironic treatment and a commitment to what came to be known as literary realism, distinguished for its unvarnished depiction of contemporary life and society and the common man and woman. The greatest influence on Maupassant’s life and career was Flaubert, a childhood friend of his mother, who personally said to Flaubert to take her son under his wing. Hence she sent her son to make Flaubert’s acquaintance at Croisset in 1867, and when he returned Paris after the war, she asked Flaubert to keep an eye on him. This was a beginning of the apprenticeship that was the making of Maupassant, the short story writer. Whenever Flaubert was staying in Paris, he used to invite Maupassant to lunch on Sundays, lecture him on prose style and correct his youthful literary exercises. Even Flaubert’s advises Maupassant’s mother to encourage her son in his taste of verse, writing and holds out hope that in time the young man may accomplish something worthy of literary fame (Riddell, 2). -

In order to make a com parison between these two works, a critical analysis will be made of each work, placing emphasis on the theme, style, and character develop ment. Although Madame Bovarv is a Realistic novel while TheVese-Requin is a Naturalistic novel, there still remains a great deal of similarity between the two literary works. Since Flaubert was the leader of the Realist school and Zola was the leader of the Naturalist school, it was felt that a comparative study of a representative work of each au thor would contribute to a better appreciation of these two phases of the nineteenth century novel. This study is divided into three chapters. The first chapter serves as an introduction and includes a biographical sketch of each author and vital details concerning their milieu. Chapter two consists of an analysis of Madame Bovarv. In Chapter three will be presented an analysis of Therese-Raquin. -

Jego znaczenie podlegało jednak istotnej ewolucji. Pierwsze użycie – w nieco odmiennej formie1 – dotyczyło zwolenników śmiałej obyczajowo Pani Bovary, któ- rzy stanęli w jej obronie podczas słynnego procesu z 1857 roku. Utwór był wówczas obszernie komentowany w prasie, a i w kolejnych latach zainteresowanie nim nie słabło. W 1860 roku Gustave Merlet poświęcił mu długi tekst, pełen zastrzeżeń dotyczących „sztuki i moralności”. W zakończeniu artykułu pojawia się pierwszy raz termin „bowaryzm”, mający określać niewłaściwie pojmowany realizm: …ten zaś realizm, który zabija wymowę i poezję utworu, w człowieku widzi tylko dzikusa, pozbywa się duszy i serca, pragnie się nam przypodobać smakiem wypa- czonym, zohydza twórczość i społeczeństwo udając, że nie znajduje w nich nic prócz brzydoty fizycznej i moralnej – ten więc realizm proponuję zwać odtąd bowaryzmem2. Propozycja nie przyjęła się, jednak termin pozostał. Pięć lat później Jules Bar- bey d’Aurevilly użył go w znaczeniu bliższym współczesnemu, pisząc o bohater- ce pewnej powieści, że „stacza się coraz niżej, aż wreszcie osiąga stan absolutne- go bowaryzmu”3. Prawdziwa kariera słowa rozpoczęła się wszelako pod koniec XIX wieku, pod piórem krytyka i filozofa Julesa de Gaultiera. Classic Novels: Meeting the Challenge of Great Literature Parts I–III Professor Arnold Weinstein THE TEACHING COMPANY ® Arnold Weinstein, Ph.D. Edna and Richard Salomon Distinguished Professor of Comparative Literature, Brown University Born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1940, Arnold Weinstein attended public schools before going to Princeton University for his college education (B.A. in Romance Languages, 1962, magna cum laude). He spent a year studying French literature at the Université de Paris (1960−1961) and a year after college at the Freie Universität Berlin, studying German literature. His graduate work was done at Harvard University (M.A. in Comparative Literature, 1964; Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, 1968), including a year as a Fulbright Scholar at the Université de Lyon in 1966−1967. Professor Weinstein’s professional career has taken place almost entirely at Brown University, where he has gone from Assistant Professor to his current position as Edna and Richard Salomon Distinguished Professor of Comparative Literature. He won the Workman Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Humanities in 1995. He has also won a number of prestigious fellowships, including a Fulbright Fellowship in American literature at Stockholm University in 1983 and research fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1998 (in the area of literature and medicine) and in 2007 (in the area of Scandinavian literature). Dans l’univers de la narration graphique, nous trouvons Gemma Bovery (2014) de Posy Simmonds, actuel- lement le seul roman graphique inspiré du chef-d’œuvre Madame Bovary (1857) de Gustave Flaubert. L’objectif du présent article est d’étudier l’ironie flaubertienne comme source de l’humour de Posy Simmonds dans Gemma Bovery (2014). D’abord, nous contextualiserons notre étude dans le domaine des adaptations, de la bande dessinée et du roman graphique à partir des ouvrages et des auteurs clés. Ensuite, dans une partie méthodologique, nous essayerons de définir brièvement le concept d’ironie ainsi que les différents concepts qui peuvent la déclencher dans un texte littéraire. Finalement, dans l’analyse proposée, nous étudierons la présence de l’ironie flaubertienne de la forme au contenu de ce roman graphique, afin d’observer également son originalité. The contradictory images of Hugo in the letters of his younger collegue form alltogether a very complex way of approach to both writers. How Did the Romans Really Crucify Jesus? Richard Binder, September 27, 2020 (edited March 14, 2021) This article is the conclusion of a secular exploration of an event that some people devoutly believe happened, while others deny the very existence of its central character. That event, or non-event, was the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth. You can find the complete series of articles at this Web address: http://www.richardspens.com/?crux= For nearly two millennia, the method by which Jesus of Nazareth was crucified has been a subject of speculation by Christians, archaeologists, historians, and others whose interest might be based on little or nothing more than curiosity. There exist countless religious paintings, sculptures, and corpora on crucifixes, and there exist also many ancient writings describing crucifixion as practiced by the Romans. This article is an attempt to pull together several applicable threads of information with the purpose of describing without religious bias just how Jesus’ crucifixion was carried out. One thing we can be sure of is that Jesus’ death on the cross did not appear as it is portrayed in depictions intended for veneration by the faithful, typified by the three images shown here—for it was horrifyingly unsuited to that purpose. In this article, I shall refer to works of this type as “traditional” depictions.
