Star Trek and History
Chapter 15 Who’s the Devil? Species Extinction and Environmentalist Thought in Star Trek Dolly Jørgensen Spock: To hunt a species to extinction is not logical. Dr. Gillian Taylor: Whoever said the human race was logical? —Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home In Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home , the inhabitants of twenty-third-century Earth learn all too well the price of their illogical behavior. By hunting the humpback whale to extinction in the twenty-first century, humankind had sealed its own fate. The humpbacks had been in communication with aliens in the twentieth century, but they had no descendants to reply to an alien probe visiting the planet two centuries later. Earth seemed to be on the verge of destruction, as the seemingly omnipotent probe demanded a reply. Luckily, the Enterprise crew saved the Earth inhabitants from a watery grave with the help of time travel, a biologist, nuclear fuel from a naval vessel, plexiglas, and two twentieth-century whales. Sometimes we think of science fiction as presenting escapist, made-up fantasy worlds. From its beginnings in the 1960s until the present, however, Star Trek has commented on contemporary social issues, establishing itself as part of a larger discourse on the state of the world.1 Contemporary environmental concerns are a major theme in Star Trek. In this chapter, we show how the portrayal of animal species’ extinction in the television shows and movies traces gradual changes in environmentalist thinking over the last forty-five years. Although species extinction could include the mass destruction of worlds and the extinction of peoples, like the loss of the Vulcans in the 2009 movie Star Trek or the civil war that wiped out the population of Cheron (TOS, “Let That Be Your 253 Last Battlefield”), the focus here is on creatures equivalent to animals rather than civilizations that are considered equivalent to humans. -

Triskelions, Some of Whom Still Refer to Their Dialect
STAR TREK ROLEPLAYING GAME sharing the culture of Triskelion. And the Triskelion SPECIES PROFILE “Thralls” are one of the most widely diverse species in the known galaxy as a result of their auspicious origins. Nowhere else can one encounter a being who is part SPECIES NAME: TRISKELION Human, part Orion, and part Kazon. VISUAL REPRESENTATION CULTURE Prior to the involvement of Captain Kirk and the USS Enterprise in the 23rd century, Triskelion was a culture of slavery, gambling, gladiatorial combat, and oppression as the Providers abducted people from their homeworlds, forced them into arena-combat, and wagered on, bought, and sold the winners and losers using a type of currency called quatloos. The Federation starship USS Enterprise under command of Captain James T. Kirk was obligated to visit the planet to secure the release of several crew kidnapped by the Providers. Upon arrival, the Enterprise discovered numerous species enslaved on the surface as thralls, including their missing crew. Eventually, to free the thralls, Kirk entered into open combat against three drill thralls, betting not quatloos on his victory, but the condition of freedom for all if he was victorious, or enslavement of the Enterprise crew if he lost. He won, and the Enterprise left the system shortly afterward. Shahna – an Orion-Human Triskelion Thrall Another condition of the wager was that the Providers would educate the remaining thralls and allow the SPECIES ADJUSTMENTS development of a free society on the planet. +2 Vitality, -1 Intellect, -1 Presence As a result, the Thralls did develop a very independent society. And yet the roots of how their culture began were PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION always held in a type of esteem. -

How Superman Developed Into a Jesus Figure
HOW SUPERMAN DEVELOPED INTO A JESUS FIGURE CRISIS ON INFINITE TEXTS: HOW SUPERMAN DEVELOPED INTO A JESUS FIGURE By ROBERT REVINGTON, B.A., M.A. A Thesis Submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts McMaster University © Copyright by Robert Revington, September 2018 MA Thesis—Robert Revington; McMaster University, Religious Studies McMaster University MASTER OF ARTS (2018) Hamilton, Ontario, Religious Studies TITLE: Crisis on Infinite Texts: How Superman Developed into a Jesus Figure AUTHOR: Robert Revington, B.A., M.A (McMaster University) SUPERVISOR: Professor Travis Kroeker NUMBER OF PAGES: vi, 143 ii MA Thesis—Robert Revington; McMaster University, Religious Studies LAY ABSTRACT This thesis examines the historical trajectory of how the comic book character of Superman came to be identified as a Christ figure in popular consciousness. It argues that this connection was not integral to the character as he was originally created, but was imposed by later writers over time and mainly for cinematic adaptations. This thesis also tracks the history of how Christians and churches viewed Superman, as the film studios began to exploit marketing opportunities by comparing Superman and Jesus. This thesis uses the methodological framework of intertextuality to ground its treatment of the sources, but does not follow all of the assumptions of intertextual theorists. iii MA Thesis—Robert Revington; McMaster University, Religious Studies ABSTRACT This thesis examines the historical trajectory of how the comic book character of Superman came to be identified as a Christ figure in popular consciousness. Superman was created in 1938, but the character developed significantly from his earliest incarnations. -
Fleet Commander, Making Him an Important Figure Indeed
24th Cen. Thot Let Pann Breen Male Breen Confederacy Biography Through all their recent conflicts in the Alpha Quadrant, the Breen have come to rely on proven leaders to command their ships and soldiers. The Confederacy consolidates its trust in individuals like Thot Gor, the military leader pushing for an alliance with the Dominion, but Thot Pann is not far behind. As with all Breen, Starfleet’s report on Let Pann could be described as “incomplete” but only charitably. Star Trek Online. Truthfully, little is known beyond the leader’s name and his involvement in several key battles with other Alpha Quadrant species where Pann was the representative who communicated enough to demand Image from surrender. He is a thot, a rank considered to be equivalent to an admiral, and seems to excel at commanding ship’s in single-vessel or fleet maneuvers. Recent reports shared from the Cardassian Detapa Council, reportedly gathered first by the Obsidian Order, paint a slightly more detailed picture. The name “Let Pann” appears on the approved listing for a diplomatic summit organized by the Cardassians twenty years ago, a meeting which included a Breen delegation as well as representatives of the Tzenkethi Coalition and the Talarian Republic. At this meeting, Pann (then a lowly h’ren) is documented as a potential intelligence officer working to coordinate with the Tzenkethi. If true, it is possible that Thot Pann is still an intelligence officer as well as a fleet commander, making him an important figure indeed. Regardless of whether this report can be trusted or not, Thot Pann is certainly a skilled commander in fleet operations. -
