United Together Against Pallister's Cuts
FALL 2019 MANITOBA FEDERATION OF LABOUR President Rebeck speaks at Labour Day rally at the Manitoba Legislature United together against Pallister’s cuts Sisters, brothers and friends, the labour movement had a busy summer, and after the snap provincial election we face another term of the Pallister 2019 MFL Health and government and its anti-union agenda. Safety Report Card ( P. 3) However, working families can also count on a stronger NDP opposition in the Manitoba Legislature to stand up for their interests, as the NDP gained six seats. Four more years of As we have done for the previous 3.5 years, Manitoba’s unions will continue Brian Pallister ( P. 4) to be a strong voice on behalf of working families against the Pallister government’s cuts and privatization moves. KEVIN REBECK As Labour Day fell during the provincial election campaign, unions and labour activists joined together for a march from the Winnipeg General Strike streetcar monument to the Manitoba Fight for a Fair Canada this election ( P. 6) Legislature, as well as community events in other communities throughout the province. On the steps of the Legislature, I was proud to join with other speakers like NDP leader Wab Kinew, and NDP candidate for Winnipeg Centre Leah Gazan to stress the need for a united labour movement to stand up and fight back against Conservative governments and their plans to hurt working families. On the municipal front, the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1505 continues to stand up for its members in contract negotiations with the City of Winnipeg. Province Signs Deal with North Dakota to Vaccinate Manitoba Truckers in the United States
April 23, 2021 Province Signs Deal with North Dakota to Vaccinate Manitoba Truckers in the United States Premier Pallister and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum announced the Essential Worker Cross- Border Vaccination Initiative, where North Dakota will administer COVID-19 vaccinations to Manitoba- based truck drivers transporting goods to and from the United States. This historic program is the first of its kind between a Canadian and American jurisdiction. With the assistance of the Manitoba Trucking Association (MTA) and its members, Manitoba will identify and co-ordinate with eligible individuals and work with North Dakota to schedule vaccination appointments for truck drivers during their routine trips to the U.S. over the next six to eight weeks. It is estimated roughly 2,000 to 4,000 Manitoba drivers will take part in this program. The North Dakota Department of Transportation’s rest area near Drayton, N.D., will initially serve as the vaccination site, which will also be open to North Dakotans ages 16 and older to get vaccinated. Vaccinations will take place from noon to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. The state and province are establishing a joint-operations group to manage the initiative. The North Dakota Department of Health will provide nurses and other staff to administer the first and second doses of the vaccine to provide full immunization of truckers. There is no cost to the state or province as the U.S. government supplies the vaccine and reimburses the costs to administer. This deal will ensure the continuation of trade between the United States and Canada at the fifth- business border crossing connecting the two jurisdictions. -

Association of Manitoba Community Pastures Inc 2017-2018 Activity Report Association of Manitoba Community Pastures PO Box 627 36 Armitage Ave Minnedosa MB R0J 1E0 204-868-0430 Email: [email protected] Website: pastures.ca 1 Executive Summary The Association of Manitoba Community Pastures (AMCP) is a not-for-profit producer- led organization governed by a Board of patrons from pastures across the province. Its mandate is to sustainably manage productive and biodiverse rangelands enhanced by livestock production. AMCP operates 20 Community Pastures: Alonsa, Bield, Birch River, Cote-San Clara, Ellice-Archie, Ethelbert-Dauphin, Ethelbert-Duck Mountain, Gardenton, Langford, Lenswood, Libau, McCreary, Mulvihill, Narcisse, Pansy, Pasquia, Spy Hill-Ellice, Sylvan Dale, Turtle Mountain and Wallace. Located in all corners of agro-Manitoba, the Community Pasture program enhances Manitoba’s livestock producers by providing grazing lands and animal care throughout the grazing season: over 40,000 head of livestock graze the Community Pastures annually from local livestock producers. 36 onsite pasture managers and riders ensured animal care, cattle rotations and range management. The community pasture program is available to all producers and prioritizes access for new and young producers just starting out. Thanks to strong rangeland management practices, AMCP Community Pastures sustain numerous environmental benefits as well as enhance Manitoba’s cattle industry and rural communities. A relatively young organization, AMCP has aggressively managed the transition of all federal, provincial and municipal lands within the Community Pastures, all staffing necessary to continue delivery of the community pasture program, securing the necessary agreements, and the establishment of a new program administration - all over three years (2014 to 2016). -

This is our annual back- to-school issue, so we thought we’d go for a lighter-hearted, upbeat cover story. This is also the second time we’ve had a dog on the cover of our paper in my tenure, which is a neat fact, but that doesn’t mean that we’re shy- ing away from harder stories or ignoring some of the more troubling realities of life in our city. In this issue, we’re covering conversations Black Space Winnipeg hosted in late August about racism and white supremacy. We’re looking back at lessons learned from anti-panhandling campaigns run by the Downtown BIZ. And we’re discussing the importance of designated acces- sible parking spots, and why they’re so vital to Winnipeggers who use them. Our staff and volunteer contributors for this issue have also explored some of the creative ways ideas and tools are shared throughout our city. -
