Introduction 1.1 Landscape designations play an important role in Scottish Planning Policy by protecting and enhancing areas of particular value. Scottish Planning Policy encourages local, non-statutory designations to protect and create an understanding of the role of locally important landscape have on communities. 1.2 In 2014, as part of the preparation of the North Lanarkshire Local Development Proposed Plan, a review of local landscape designations was undertaken by URS as part of wider action for landscape protection and management. 2. URS Review of North Lanarkshire Local Landscape Character (2015) 2.1 The purpose of the Review was to identify and provide an awareness of the special character and qualities of the designated landscape in North Lanarkshire and to contribute to guiding appropriate future development to the most appropriate locations. The Review has identified a number of Local Landscape Units (LLU) that are of notable quality and value within which future development requires careful consideration to avoid potential significant impact on their landscape character. 2.2 There are two exemplar LLUs identified in this study, Kilsyth Hills and Clyde Valley, which are seen as very sensitive to development. Both of these areas warrant specific recognition and protection, as their high landscape quality would be threatened and adversely affected by unsympathetic development within their boundaries. -

The Scottish Iron Age provides rich data of international quality to link into broader, European-wide research questions, such as that from wetlands and the well-preserved and deeply-stratified settlement sites of the Atlantic zone, from crannog sites and from burnt-down buildings. The nature of domestic architecture, the movement of people and resources, the spread of ideas and the impact of Rome are examples of topics that can be explored using Scottish evidence. The period is therefore important for understanding later prehistoric society, both in Scotland and across Europe. There is a long tradition of research on which to build, stretching back to antiquarian work, which represents a considerable archival resource. -

An Interim Report on the Results of the Lairg Project 1988 - 1992 R.P.J
AN INTERIM REPORT ON THE RESULTS OF THE LAIRG PROJECT 1988 - 1992 R.P.J. McCullagh Abstract This paper reviews the archaeological fieldwork undertaken at Lairg, Sutherland from 1988 to 1991 and reports on the preliminary results ofpost-excavation analyses. This programme was established at the instigation of regional and national heritage agencies to advise on a route for a proposed upgraded road. Standard and innovatory techniques of archaeological excavation and survey were combined with various environmental approaches in an attempt to map the evolution of the present-day landscape. In particular, the project has sought to identify and analyse the crucial role of land-use in this evolution. Introduction The recent archaeological work at Lairg, in eastern Sutherland, took place within a corridor of land that straddles the A836. This corridor measures 2.2 miles (3.5km) by a maximum of 330yds (O.3km) and runs north from Achinduich farm to about 0.6 miles (lkm) south of the village of Lairg (Fig. 1). The then Highland Regional Roads Authority (HRRA) informed Historic Scotland and sought assistance in achieving a route that would cause the least damage to the archaeological remains in the corridor. The archaeological project that developed from this enquiry has been funded by Highland Regional Council and Historic Scotland. The fieldwork spanned four years: 1988 a topographic survey of upstanding monuments; 1989 a test-pit sampling programme; 1990 a short season of scientific sampling; 1990 an eight week season of excavations; 1991 a further eight week season of excavations. Further fieldwork directed towards the sampling needs of two associated research studentships (see below) has also been undertaken. -

Forth and Clyde Canal Surface Water Management Potential Hazel Smith, Hydrologist, AECOM [email protected] Introduction The Forth & Clyde Canal is a 39 mile (62.5km) long manmade inland waterway linking the Firth of Forth in the east to the River Clyde in the west. In and around Glasgow near the canal system there is the potential to develop land, however, with the existing sewer network at capacity and no nearby watercourses, many areas are essentially land locked. The Forth and Clyde Canal offers a significant opportunity for draining future development and reducing existing flood risk problems. AECOM UK Limited was commissioned in June 2010 by British Waterways Scotland (BWS) to undertake a review and update of the Forth and Clyde Canal hydrological and hydraulic model and subsequently to investigate the opportunities that the canal can offer, through changes to the operational management of the system. The study required the collation and review of available data, relevant to the modelled study reach, including hydrological information, structure dimensions and cross-sectional channel geometry information. -
Souterrains in Sutherland
SOUTERRAINS IN SUTHERLAND Alex. Morrison BACKGROUND The terminology of these sites has varied considerably over the past 150 years, with labels such as Pier's house, eirde house, earth-house (RCAHMS Sutherland Inventory 1911 ), we em and leabidh jholaich being used at different times, and mostly suggesting a dwelling or refuge function. Some of this has been discussed by Broth well (1977. 179), who avoided the word souterrain as: ... a more cautious term - covering as it does an underground passage, tunnel, subway structure - but does not imply any expanded or terminal 'living' or 'storage' area which some seem to show, and it is difficult to determine how much of some structures was originally underground. Most recent writers on the subject appear to be well aware of the limitations involved in the use of the word 'sou terrain', and of the implications for living, storage and even possible 'ritual' functions of the surviving remains. Despite the lack of evidence, in some cases, as to whether the structures were completely or partially underground, the word 'souterrain' will be retained here, and will be used to refer to structures of 'typical' souterrain shape- to passages, more or less curved; and to underground chambers which might not be passages but which seem, in some examples, to have good evidence of being attached to surface structures. The number of structures under this heading [Fig. I 0.1] is not large for the size of the area involved, nor is the information available consistent in quantity and quality. Not all structures recorded in the 1911 Royal Commission Inventory and later sources are undoubted souterrains, and some of the sites listed here have a question mark against them as an indicator of incomplete information. -
