English-Language Arts: Operational Lesson Title: The Meaning of the Federalist Papers Enduring Understanding: Equality is necessary for democracy to thrive. Essential Question: How did the constitutional system described in The Federalist Papers contribute to our national ideas about equality? Lesson Overview This two-part lesson explores the Federalist Papers. First, students engage in a discussion about how they get information about current issues. Next, they read a short history of the Federalist Papers and work in small groups to closely examine the text. Then, student pairs analyze primary source manuscripts concerning the Federalist Papers and relate these documents to what they have already learned. In an optional interactive activity, students now work in small groups to research a Federalist or Anti-Federalist and role-play this person in a classroom debate on the adoption of the Constitution. Extended writing and primary source activities follow that allow students to use their understanding of the history and significance of the Federalist Papers. Lesson Objectives Students will be able to: • Explain arguments for the necessity of a Constitution and a bill of rights. • Define democracy and republic and explain James Madison’s use of these terms. • Describe the political philosophy underpinning the Constitution as specified in the Federalist Papers using primary source examples. • Discuss and defend the ideas of the leading Federalists and Anti-Federalists on several issues in a classroom role-play debate. (Optional Activity) • Develop critical thinking, writing skills, and facility with textual evidence by examining the strengths of either Federalism or Anti-Federalism. (Optional/Extended Activities) • Use both research skills and creative writing techniques to draft a dialogue between two contemporary figures that reflects differences in Federalist and Anti-Federalist philosophies. -

In the first episode, Vice President Selina Meyer keeps asking her secretary whether the president has called. He hasn’t. She then walks into a U.S. senator’s office and asks of her old colleague, “What have I been missing here?” Without looking up from her computer, the senator responds, “Power.” Until recently, vice presidents were not very interesting nor was the relationship between presidents and their vice presidents very consequential—and for good reason. Historically, vice presidents have been understudies, have often been disliked or even despised by the president they served, and have been used by political parties, derided by journalists, and ridiculed by the public. The job of vice president has been so peripheral that VPs themselves have even made fun of the office. That’s because from the beginning of the nineteenth century until the last decade of the twentieth century, most vice presidents were chosen to “balance” the ticket. The balance in question could be geographic—a northern presidential candidate like John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts picked a southerner like Lyndon B. -

From Broadway With Love – The Cast Sherry Gibbs Houston is no stranger to the SA stage with memorable roles like: Sister Act (Mother Superior), The Drowsy Chaperone (Mrs. Tottendale), The King & I (Anna), and My Fair Lady (Eliza Doolittle). Originated roles include Roads Courageous (Minnie Brinkley), and Senior Moments (Loretta). Sherry performs regularly with Ethics Follies and is a founding cast member of The Allegro Stage Company. She holds a degree in Music/Vocal Performance from UTSA and is a member of Sigma Alpha Iota Music Fraternity. Sherry is a Texas Realtor with JB Goodwin Realtors. Anna Gangai is an active member of our city’s theatre community for the last 30 years performing the lead roles in Mame, Hello Dolly, Sweeney Todd, Evita, Gypsy, Master Class, Private Lives, and other classic musicals and plays. A charter member, Anna loves singing with the talented bunch from Allegro Stage Company. Ms. Gangai holds a BFA in Acting from the University of Texas at Austin and also attended Purdue University for MFA studies in Acting and Voice. Angelique Gabrielle Paccione is a professional dancer and choreographer from San Antonio, but her heart has always been taken by musical theatre. I’d like to be an actress because I LOVE to act. It’s fun because I can get to be a different person. It’s like being your own alter ego. I feel happy and powerful when I’m acting. The best thing about it is getting to tell a story in your own way, by acting the words you say (haha that rhymes!) What makes a good actress? To be a good actor/actress, you have to feel the part to be the part. And you have to be passionate about the role you are playing. Having chemistry and getting along with the other cast members is also a very important part of acting. A good actor/actress also needs to step out of his or her comfort zone, every once in a while so they can embrace themselves. Are you a good actress? I feel like I am. I feel like I have all of the right traits and abilities and the right personality. -

David Pascoe Second Reader: Dr. Anna Poletti MLA 8 Referencing System 8 February 2021 5734 Words Abstract The aim of the thesis has been to prove how Alexander Hamilton, the main character in Lin- Manuel Miranda’s musical Hamilton, represents the American myth of the self-made man. This has been analysed through a close reading of the musical lyrics, focusing on some of Hamilton’s character traits — hard work, ambition and awareness of his legacy — and seen from different thematical perspectives: his life story, his connection to the United States, his antagonists and his family. Miranda uses the myth of the self-made man to craft a success story while at the same time subverting it by showing the negative consequences it can have. Furthermore, the musical offers a chance to reflect on current issues in the United States such as the importance of diversity in representation or the sacred view on foundational texts and myths. Over 1,500 people died in the most famous maritime disaster in history. Thousands of pages have been written about the loss of the Titanic, as well as many documentary and fictional movies produced. Many focus on the construction of the ship and the actions of its captain and crew. Whatever the construction and operating issues, attention to one particular issue could have saved many lives – Emergency Preparation! Some specific failures in emergency preparedness before the sinking of the Titanic included: • Not enough lifeboats for all passengers and crew, perhaps because the builders considered the ship “unsinkable”! • No lifeboat drills had been conducted, and many people did not know where to go or what to do. • Many of the first lifeboats to leave the Titanic were not full and some occupants were reluctant to pull other people from the icy water for fear of capsizing their lifeboat. • The decision to abandon ship was delayed while the captain and crew assessed damage. Had the captain started evacuation earlier, before people began to panic, more lifeboats may have been filled in a more orderly evacuation. What can you do?
