Maybe the best way to make it through winters and sadness is to go to them and through them instead of trying to avoid them. This would be a five-star book if it wasn't for the incessant nitpicking by Albanov. Albanov's experience is a brief, gripping account of a story that rivals the greatest survival tales in history. In their introduction, Jon Krakauer and David Roberts give a bit of background to the expedition and put it into context with other such undertakings. You can't help but admire someone who refused to leave his diary behind, and wrote bent over a smoky bear fat lamp with frozen finger, just so he could keep a record. But I am strengthened, by the fact that men like Albanov did. I finished this relatively quickly as, every time I put it down, I wondered how the men were going to get out of the mess that seemed to get worse at every stage. His narrative was first published in Russian in , but not translated until The ingenuity, resourcefulness, and resolve presented in this first-hand account are admirable, and a testament of Albanov's expertise as a sailor. The writing is so real remember this isn't fiction that you cannot help but to put yourself right next to Albanov and wonder whether you would have it in you to persist and go on and not give up. Language: English. Very cool that it's taken from the first hand account of one of the survivors and leader. He also does a wonderful job describing the animals and landscape of the Arctic, and doesn't skimp on the hardship. Whereas other expeditions have been written in absentia, decades after the fact, this account is important because Albanov himself describes his incredible journey. Despite knowing the ending before opening the book, it was easy to be held captive by his writing, waiting to see what happens next. Very much recommended for any fans of Arctic exploration, Russian history, or survival literature in general. The narrative is in the form of the diary entries of the ship's navigator, Valerian Albanov. Books by Valerian Albanov. So, I particularly appreciated David Robert's afterward, which focuses on the other survivor's journal to flesh out some of the details. Convinced that the Saint Anna would never free herself from the ice, Albanov and thirteen crewmen left the ship in January , hauling makeshift sledges and kayaks behind them across the frozen sea, hoping to reach the distant coast of Franz Josef Land. The strength of character and sheer wherewithal that some people have astounds me. However, the hides only cover up half of their body, so they need to choose which half would be cold for the night. They also introduce a bit of research into the background and aftermath of the expedition. Whereas other expeditions have been written in absentia, decades after the fact, this account is important because Albanov himself describes his incredible journey. The Epilogue, also Albanov's story is a breathtaking, astounding read, and reasonably well translated. In , Valerian Albanov was the navigator for the ill-fated Brusilov Expedition, which went forth into the frozen Kara sea to search for new sources of walrus, seals, and polar bears. Albanov also ran out of biscuit, tea, chocolate, canned meat but his pages dwell more and more on turning to seal and walrus, polar bear and Eider duck, eating these raw, having difficulty melting enough drinking water when fuel runs low, how ice doesn't quench thirst. The crew survived two brutal winters inboard despite running out of fuel and having limited supplies. Seal blubber almost gone. Their journey covered miles of ice, snow blindness, starvation, fighting the elements every step of the way. You can't help but admire someone who refused to leave his diary behind, and wrote bent over a smoky bear fat lamp with frozen finger, just so he could keep a record. They crossed miles of ice and open water, finally reaching some tiny islands, but even that doesn't guarantee their safety. Warning: May contain spoilers. Colorado State University Seal The Colorado State University seal is a modification of the official State of Colorado Seal, approved by the first General Assembly of the State of Colorado on March 15, 1877. The seal consists of the eye of God within a triangle, from which golden rays radiate. Below the triangle is a bundle of birch or elm rods, wrapped with a scroll and around a battle axe bound by thongs. The scroll is called a Roman fasces and is the insignia of a republican form of government. The bundle of rods bound together symbolizes strength, which is lacking in the single rod. The axe symbolizes authority and leadership. Below the scroll is the heraldic shield bearing across the top three snow-capped mountains. The lower half of the shield has two miner’s tools, the pick and sledge hammer, crossed on the ground. As the University evolved, the seal was updated to reflect changes to the school’s name. The original name was the State Agricultural College. In 1935, the name changed to Colorado State College of Agricultural and Mechanical Arts. In 1957, the name was again changed – this time to Colorado State University. The original seal was made of hand-tooled leather. Damaged during the campus flooding of 1938, the original border was cut away in a random and arbitrary fashion and stitched back down on a new piece of leather in a scallop-like manner, giving the seal its current appearance.

Early in the 20th century a flurry of ships set off on expeditions of discovery in both the southern and northern polar regions to map the final reaches of the globe. Many of the names have become synonymous with polar exploration: Scott, Amundsen, Stefansson, Peary, Shackleton. These men endured unimaginable hardships and deprivation. They routinely faced death and indeed some of them did not survive their ordeals. Yet for all the well-known explorers there are many more whose names we do not know. Valerian Ivanovich Albanov is one such name. The same year Robert Falcon Scott succumbed in Antarctica, a 32-year-old Russian navigator embarked on an expedition that would ultimately prove disastrous. Searching for new Arctic hunting grounds, the Saint Anna, under the command of Georgiy Brusilov, set off from Alexandrovsk, present-day Murmansk, a Russian northern coastal city on the Barents Sea. The intent was to emerge at the other end of the Northeast Passage at Vladivostok. This route had been attempted by many before, starting in the 16th century with Dutch navigator Willem Barentz, followed by Henry Hudson in early in the 17th century before he met his end in the Canadian Arctic looking for the Northwest Passage.

    11/3/2018 Deportation 1941 - NORKA NORKA (/) History (/) > Deportation 1941 Deportation 1941 On August 28, 1941, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet issued a Ukaz (decree) attempting to provide a legal basis for the decision to deport the ethnic Germans of the Volga German ASSR (Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic) (/soviet-rule- 1918-1941.html), the Saratov Oblast (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oblast) (Province), and the Stalingrad Oblast. The decision had already been made by the Council of People's Commissars and Central Committee of the Communist Party two days earlier. This forced expulsion brought an end to Norka and all the Volga German settlements that began over 175 years earlier (/founding-of-norka- 1767.html) under Catherine the Great's Manifesto (/catherines-manifesto- 1763.html). Tensions between the ethnic Germans living in Russia and their Russian counterparts had a long history. Generally, the Germans living in Norka lived peacefully with their Russian neighbors, but stories told by Norka native Conrad Brill (/memories-of-norka.html), who served in the Russian army before immigrating to the United States, illustrate some of tension that existed between the ethnic groups. In describing Norka, Brill writes: “The Karamysh River ran north and south between Beideck and Norka, but up north it veered or turned westward, so it bordered what was considered two sides of the Norka ground, the eastern edge and also the northern edge. Across the river on northern shore, was a Russian village named Rybushka that we traveled through when going toward Saratov….. To the west we bordered with Russian villages on the Medveditsa River.
