Torchwood: Exodus Code is the 19th Torchwood novel from BBC Books, and the first to be written by the show’s star John Barrowman, alongside sister Carole E. Barrowman. Russell T Davies’ Doctor Who spin off Torchwood, starring John Barrowman, aired between 2006 and 2011 on BBC America and the Starz network. Torchwood featured Captain Jack Harkness, a time traveler and former con man from the 51st century, who had appeared in Doctor Who alongside the Ninth and Tenth Doctors (as played by Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant). Torchwood revolved around a branch of the fictional Torchwood Institute based in Cardiff, Wales, dedicated to defending the human race against alien threats. While the television show is on indefinite hiatus, Torchwood has a trans-media presence with a number of comics, audio plays, and novel tie-ins to continue the story for fans. When the book was first announced in the UK, Senior Editorial Director at BBC Books, Albert DePetrillo, said, ‘I think the secret of Torchwood’s success is that, amid the big, bold plots, it has always been a character-driven drama – and few people know these characters as well as John Barrowman. We’re thrilled that he and Carole were able to continue the story of the Torchwood universe with this novel.’ Synopsis It starts with a series of unexplained events. Earth tremors across the globe. Women being driven insane by their heightened and scrambled senses. And the world is starting to notice – the number one Twitter trend is #realfemmefatales. Governments and scientists are bewildered and silent. The world needs Torchwood, but there’s not much of Torchwood left. Captain Jack has tracked the problem to its source: a village in Peru, where he’s uncovered evidence of alien involvement. In Cardiff, Gwen Cooper has discovered something alien and somehow connected to Jack. If the world is to be restored, she has to warn him – but she’s quickly becoming a victim of the madness too… About the Authors John became Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who in May 2005 and has appeared in eleven episodes of the hit show, before taking the lead role in Torchwood. John is currently starring in the CW’s Arrow, and has recently been announced as the host of upcoming ABC reality show Sing Your Face Off. Carole is Professor of English and Director of Creative Studies in Writing at Alverno College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She writes a monthly crime fiction column and regular reviews and features for newspapers. She contributed a chapter to the Hugo award-winning non-fiction anthology Chicks Dig Time Lords. John and Carole Barrowman have been science fiction fans since the Third Doctor. They’ve collaborated on two volumes of John’s autobiography, a comic strip adventure with Captain Jack in the official UK Torchwood magazine and a fantasy children’s novel, Hollow Earth. DOI: 10.5294/pacla.2017.20.3.7 Abstract Telefantasy series Torchwood (2006–2011, multiple production partners) was industrially and paratextually positioned as being Welsh, despite its frequent status as an international co-production. When, for series 4 (sub- titled Miracle Day, much as the miniseries produced as series 3 was subti- tled Children of Earth), the production (and diegesis) moved primarily to the United States as a co-production between BBC Worldwide and Amer- ican premium cable broadcaster Starz, fan response was negative from the announcement, with the series being termed Americanised in popular and academic discourse. This study, drawn from my doctoral research, which interrogates all of these assumptions via textual, industrial/contextual and audience analysis focusing upon ideological, aesthetic and interpretations of national identity representation, focuses upon the interactions between fan cultural capital and national cultural capital and how those interactions impact others of the myriad of reasons why the (re)glocalisation failed. It finds that, in part due to the competing public service and commercial ide- ologies of the BBC, Torchwood was a glocalised text from the beginning, de- spite its positioning as Welsh, which then became glocalised again in series 4.

    Sociopathetic abscess or yawning chasm? The absent postcolonial transition in Doctor Who Lindy A Orthia The Australian National University, Canberra, Australia Abstract This paper explores discourses of colonialism, cosmopolitanism and postcolonialism in the long-running television series, Doctor Who. Doctor Who has frequently explored past colonial scenarios and has depicted cosmopolitan futures as multiracial and queer- positive, constructing a teleological model of human history. Yet postcolonial transition stages between the overthrow of colonialism and the instatement of cosmopolitan polities have received little attention within the program. This apparent ‘yawning chasm’ — this inability to acknowledge the material realities of an inequitable postcolonial world shaped by exploitative trade practices, diasporic trauma and racist discrimination — is whitewashed by the representation of past, present and future humanity as unchangingly diverse; literally fixed in happy demographic variety. Harmonious cosmopolitanism is thus presented as a non-negotiable fact of human inevitability, casting instances of racist oppression as unnatural blips. Under this construction, the postcolonial transition needs no explication, because to throw off colonialism’s chains is merely to revert to a more natural state of humanness, that is, cosmopolitanism. Only a few Doctor Who stories break with this model to deal with the ‘sociopathetic abscess’ that is real life postcolonial modernity.
