Steggles Dear Friends, School’s out - and has been for a couple of weeks now! Although this year the children have had a very disrupted time, with school effectively being ‘out’ for the last few months and only back ‘in’ the last two weeks. Of course, this year, it also seems likely that more people will be ‘stay-cationing’ than will be jet- ting off to foreign parts for their holiday. As far as spiritual refreshment through our churches is concerned, things remain very different from usual – all four have had to remain closed so far for people to meet together for worship. However, three have now opened for individual prayer; St James’s Cardington and St Peter’s Rushbury are open by appointment and St Andrew’s Hope Bowdler is offering two hours every Wednesday (10:00-11:00am and 7:00-8:00pm) when the church will be open and available to in- dividuals and small family groups for private prayer. St Edith’s at Eaton-under-Heywood has had to delay any opening at all for a while because of repair work on one of the windows, but the PCC is looking to some way of opening up for prayer soon after that is complete. The question of reopening for services again remains under discussion and changes to the cur- rent situation will be shared as soon as they seem feasible in each church’s particular circum- stances. It will probably be a while yet before our established pattern of services can be re- sumed. We continue to publish a weekly reflection on the Sunday readings, with some information about services available locally and nationally and to post some of this on the Benefice Facebook page and through the online Honeypot too. It is also shared by email with the PCC members and other contacts. If you would like to receive this email too, please contact your PCC secretary, details listed elsewhere in the Honeypot, to be added to the contact list. We look forward to the time when we can meet and worship together, With my love and blessings, Sue 1 This month’s copy should be with the editor by Monday August 10th Alterations to contact details on the inside cover, or the two Church information sections, need to be with the editorial team before the first day of each month. From the village notice board … Cardington Parish Council Update In line with the Covid 19 restrictions, unless urgent decisions are required, the Parish Council do not have to hold a meeting. Therefore the July meeting was cancelled. The Parish Council are pleased to report that Shropshire Council have started to clear gullies, ditches and undertake other work to improve the drainage around the Parish and so avoid repetitive flash flood- ing and resultant damage to roads. The Parish Council continue to consider planning applications in the Parish and comment accordingly. As you are aware the Parish Council were issuing the "Smartwater packs" before the Covid19 restrictions were in place. Packs are still available for those properties who have not yet collected them. The collec- tion point will be publicised as soon as restrictions allow. The next meeting of Cardington Parish Council is planned for Tuesday 1st September to be held in the Village Hall commencing at 8pm and it is hoped that restrictions are lifted to allow this to go ahead. Residents who have any concerns about matters in the Parish, or wish to raise any issues at future meet- ings are welcome to contact the Clerk, Jennie Griffiths Tel 01694 751326 Email [email protected] http://www.cardingtonparishcouncilshropshire.co.uk Cardington Parish Council Please

  • Tucked Between Flat Midlands and Ru Walks of the Shropshire Way and Ordnance
., . SHRO Tucked between flat Midlands and ru walks of the Shropshire Way and Ordnance WORDS NICK HAWSSEY PHOTOGRAPHY BOB ATKINS hurch Stretton and the hills around it occupy some bizarre bubble of alternate space, floating ephemerally somewhere west of Shrewsbury. C This pocket paradise of underused paths and trails shouldn't be there; it's been sneaked in, between pancake-flat Midlands and Welsh gnarl, like a bit of late school homework. Arriving here feels like you've broken into another dimension, one where time stopped several hours ago and where the place names are a tongue-twisting mish mash of Old English, Welsh and something else entirely. I had never set foot in Shropshire before this feature. Now, I'd happily rank it among my favourite places to walk. Anywhere. And here's why... THE SHROPSHIRE WAY A few years ago, ex-Army officer and adoptive Shroppie lad Jim Stabler took a look at the Shropshire Way and found it wanting. It skirted some staggering beauty spots, as if paranoid of going too near them. It failed to link some of the best walking country that Shropshire has to offer. And it was full of stiles, tricky river crossings and other navigational tripwires. Jim resolved to do something about it. and with help from Shropshire County Council. he has. As walkers, we owe the man a pint, especially as he's done it in a couple of years and for a mere £160,000 - most of it coming from the European Union. His work has concentrated on the southern section, which is at the heart of Explorer 21Z This stretch takes in the big hitters of the trail.

  • Rural Settlement List 2014
National Non Domestic Rates RURAL SETTLEMENT LIST 2014 1 1. Background Legislation With effect from 1st April 1998, the Local Government Finance and Rating Act 1997 introduced a scheme of mandatory rate relief for certain kinds of hereditament situated in ‘rural settlements’. A ‘rural settlement’ is defined as a settlement that has a population of not more than 3,000 on 31st December immediately before the chargeable year in question. The Non-Domestic Rating (Rural Settlements) (England) (Amendment) Order 2009 (S.I. 2009/3176) prescribes the following hereditaments as being eligible with effect from 1st April 2010:- Sole food shop within a rural settlement and has a RV of less than £8,500; Sole general store within a rural settlement and has a RV of less than £8,500; Sole post office within a rural settlement and has a RV of less than £8,500; Sole public house within a rural settlement and has a RV of less than £12,500; Sole petrol filling station within a rural settlement and has a RV of less than £12,500; Section 47 of the Local Government Finance Act 1988 provides that a billing authority may grant discretionary relief for hereditaments to which mandatory relief applies, and additionally to any hereditament within a rural settlement which is used for purposes which are of benefit to the local community. Sections 42A and 42B of Schedule 1 of the Local Government and Rating Act 1997 dictate that each Billing Authority must prepare and maintain a Rural Settlement List, which is to identify any settlements which:- a) Are wholly or partly within the authority’s area; b) Appear to have a population of not more than 3,000 on 31st December immediately before the chargeable financial year in question; and c) Are, in that financial year, wholly or partly, within an area designated for the purpose.
