The Food Bank for Central & Northeast 2017 Accomplishments Report A note from our director What do you envision when you think about a pound of food? Is it a package of ground beef ready to be turned into hamburgers for a weeknight dinner? Is it a can of corn or perhaps a boxed meal kit?

Over The Food Bank’s 36-year history, a lot of emphasis has been placed on increasing the number of pounds of food that we distribute every year. In recent years, however, we have taken a step back to re-evaluate that strategy. We have questioned the quality of those pounds and brainstormed ways to put more focus on healthy foods such as produce, protein, dairy and whole grains. Since 2015, we have been refocusing The Food Bank’s lens to zoom in on quality over quantity.

That effort is paying off. This past year, we acquired and distributed a higher percentage of fresh fruits and vegetables, protein and dairy products than any time in The Food Bank’s history. We came up with creative solutions, which we were able to fund through unique grant opportunities. We continued to develop partnerships with retailers and wholesalers to help distribute foods that encourage good health.

And we did it with your help. We were able to accomplish so much in 2017 because many of you realized what we could do with your dollar. You understood that our purchasing power is great, and you entrusted us with your charitable investments. Because of that support, Missourians facing hunger had food, and not just empty calories but rather nutritious options. Together, we not only shared food, we brought hope by improving upon the quality of life for so many who struggle with access to good nutrition.

In this report, you will learn more about our successes. Please know that if you donated funds, food or time, you share in these accomplishments. On behalf of The Food Bank team, thank you for playing a critical role in our mission and operation.

Gratefully,

Lindsay Young Lopez Executive Director

We are changing the way we share food.

This past year, The Food Bank for Central & Northeast Missouri strived to provide food that encourages good health— namely fresh produce, protein, dairy and whole grains. To do this, we emphasized the benefit of making monetary donations over traditional food drive items. We formed new partnerships to increase acquisition of fresh foods. We secured grant dollars to implement creative strategies to increase the distribution of perishable goods.

And we are thrilled to report success.

In 2017, 61% of the food we distributed was considered “foods to encourage”—a record amount of healthy food we have distributed in our 36-year history.

QUALITY OVER QUANTITY

For decades, The Food Bank—like most in the country—focused on the transfer of shelf-stable goods. These canned and boxed foods are easy to acquire, transport and store. Canned foods also tend to weigh more than fresh foods, so increasing the distribution of non-perishable goods led to a consistent increase in pounds distributed each year.

A few years ago, The Food Bank’s senior team reconsidered that strategy.

Canned and boxed foods are less healthy than their fresh counterparts. They are often high in sodium and can complicate health issues such as diabetes and hypertension. Research shows that people facing food insecurity tend to have higher rates of these diseases, in part because processed food is less expensive at the store.

“We realized that food pantries could become part of a solution, rather than part of the problem,” says Lindsay Young Lopez, executive director of The Food Bank. “We are now focused on the types of food we distribute, not necessarily just the number of pounds of food we distribute.”

Distributing fresh food is not easy. Perishable goods are more expensive and harder to acquire. They cannot be donated through traditional food drives and require refrigeration throughout the acquisition and distribution process.

To overcome these obstacles, The Food Bank focused on finding unique funding opportunities. At the beginning of 2017, a grant from the Morgan Stanley Foundation and Feeding America allowed The Food Bank to double storage capacity for fresh fruits and vegetables by adding vertical shelving in the warehouse cooler. The racking is built at an angle, allowing pallets to slide as they are added or removed. Simply adding storage in the warehouse is not enough, however, to get fresh foods to people in need. The Food Bank also must ensure that its food pantries, soup kitchens and other partner agencies also have the capability to store perishable items prior to distribution day.

That’s where a grant from Disney’s Share the Joy campaign and Feeding America came in. The $15,000 grant allowed The Food Bank to purchase five new coolers to be loaned to food pantries that did not have adequate refrigeration.

“We know we can store produce, protein and dairy here, but if our agencies cannot keep it fresh, it runs the risk of going to waste,” says Daryle Bascom, director of operations. “We are incredibly grateful for Disney’s support and commitment to the wellbeing of those we serve. This will allow us to continue our efforts to increase the distribution of foods to encourage.”

The Food Bank is also increasing distribution of fresh food through Mobile Pantries, which are refrigerated box trucks that deliver food in communities without sufficient brick-and-mortar pantries. A Mobile Pantry holds between 10,000 and 12,000 pounds of food, the majority of which is perishable goods such as produce, protein and dairy. The Food Bank has four mobile pantry trucks that make 15 stops monthly across our 32-county service area. That includes five stops every month at locations in Cole County, thanks to a new Mobile Pantry truck donated by the United Way of Central Missouri Foundation and United Way of Central Missouri.

IMPROVING ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Bascom also turned attention to The Food Bank’s energy efficiency, knowing that every dollar spent on utility costs is a dollar diverted from the acquisition of healthy food.

This past year, The Food Bank became part of the Southface Energy Institute, Nonprofit Energy and Water Efficiency initiative. This program, offered through Feeding America, provided a five-day energy audit followed by a $31,579 grant to improve efficiency.

That grant funded the installation of web-based thermostats and refrigeration monitoring, as well as replacement of all interior and exterior lighting to LED lights on motion sensors, projects that were completed in December. These improvements triggered a $9,000 rebate from Columbia Water and Light and have already saved more than $8,000 in energy costs.

Also last year, The Food Bank secured funding to replace a nearly 20-year old HVAC unit in the Volunteer Room. Boone County Community Trust covered half of the costs of the project, while Hulett Heating and Air Conditioning and Sheet Metal Workers Local 36 covered the other half. The new unit generated a rebate from the city and is expected to save on utility costs, as well.

“We are so thankful to the partners who helped us make these improvements in 2017,” Lopez says. “These changes will have an impact on the way we distribute food for decades to come. By sharing nutritious food, we are bringing hope for a healthier tomorrow.” PERENNIAL GROWING THE FIELDS OF HOPE Year after year, members of the Perennial Society sustain the mission of The Food Bank. HOW WE WORK Donated funds allow The Food Bank to purchase groceries in bulk quantities, including perishable items that cannot be donated through traditional food drives. The Food Bank sorts items and, if necessary, sends them into the Volunteer Room to be repackaged.

The Food Bank sends food to food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other partner agencies. The Food Bank is the only food bank in the state and one of few in the country to provide that food at no cost. Agencies distribute groceries or provide meals to families, children, seniors and others who are hungry.

Additionally, we provide special programming for at-risk populations.

BUDDY PACKS The Buddy Pack Program provides food over weekends and holidays to children who rely on free or reduced-price meals at school. Kid-friendly items such as ready-to-eat entrées, fruit cups, cereal with shelf-stable milk and nutritional bars are sent home in discreet bags that fit inside student backpacks. Additionally, older children have access to these types of items at school pantries. The Buddy Pack Program serves 7,500 children weekly. Because of The Food Bank’s ability to purchase bulk food items, we are able to provide a Buddy Pack to a student every weekend during the school year for a gift of just $180.

CSFP SENIOR BOXES Through the Commodity Supplemental Food Program, The Food Bank works with USDA to provide extra nutrition to low-income older adults. These boxes, distributed to 2,880 seniors every month, contain items such as low-sodium canned vegetables, pasta, rice, beans and juice. Senior citizens are the fastest growing population in need of food assistance.

VIP VETERAN PACKS The VIP Veteran Pack Program provides boxes of ready-to-eat foods to Veterans living at or below poverty. These boxes typically contain self-heating meals, canned fruits and vegetables, canned soup, peanut butter and personal care items. It began as a pilot program in Boone County in 2016, and The Food Bank is currently expanding distribution of VIP Veteran Packs to other counties within our service area. 2017 at a Glance 2018 Goals The Food Bank distributed 29.8 Our goal is to continue to improve million pounds of food, of which 61% upon the nutritional quality of the food was in the form of what Feeding we distribute.
