Anne of Green Gables (1985 Television Miniseries) Anne of Green Gables was a television miniseries produced by Sullivan Films (Anne of Green Gables Productions) in association with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, PBS/Wonderworks, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, TV-60 Film Production/ZDF, City-TV, and with the participation of Telefilm Canada. Adapted from L.M. Montgomery’s novel by Kevin Sullivan and Joe Wiesenfeld and directed by Kevin Sullivan, the miniseries premiered as two ninety-five-minute instalments on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation on 1–2 December 1985; it aired subsequently as four forty-five-minute instalments on PBS on 17, 24 February, and 3, 10 March 1986 and on 2, 9, 16, and 23 November 1986 on the ZDF network (in what was then West Germany), and as two instalments on 18–19 December 1989 on City-TV. The cast included Megan Follows (Anne Shirley), Colleen Dewhurst (Marilla Cuthbert), Richard Farnsworth (Matthew Cuthbert), Patricia Hamilton (Rachel Lynde), Rosemary Radcliffe (Mrs. Barry), Schuyler Grant (Diana Barry), Marilyn Lightstone (Miss Stacey), Charmion King (Aunt Josephine Barry), and Jackie Burroughs (Mrs. Amelia Evans). Budgeted at $3.4 million, this miniseries averaged 5.6 million viewers when it premiered in Canada in 1985, making it the highest-rated dramatic program in the history of the CBC. For the most part, this miniseries is a faithful adaptation of the original novel; omissions aside, most of the changes made are more structural than creative, some of them closely paralleled to Nicholls’ direction of the 1934 talkie version of Anne of Green Gables . Ultimately, however, Sullivan and Wiesenfeld continue the tradition of refocusing the plot on Anne’s relationship with Gilbert. Most of the scenes invented by the screenwriters serve to emphasize their budding relationship: as Susan Drain concludes in her detailed review of the television miniseries, “the film, by concentrating on the love story, is in some ways more old-fashioned, or even narrower, than the book. The film is an exquisite romance, but the novel is a Bildungsroman . That reduction is, finally, a loss” (72). The success of this miniseries prompted three sequels – Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel (1987), Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story (2000), and Anne of Green Gables: A New Beginning (2008) – along with a spin-off series (1990–1996), an animated series (2000–2001), and an animated film (2005), all from Sullivan Entertainment. This Anne of Green Gables adaptation won ten Gemini Awards (including Best Dramatic Mini-Series), an Emmy Award for Outstanding Children’s Program, a Peabody Award, and numerous other international awards and accolades. Reading In and Out of Order: Living In and Around an Extended Fiction DOI https://doi.org/10.32393/jlmms/2020.0001 Published on Fri, 01/24/2020 - 00:00 Many series books recount the life of a character growing up over a sequence of titles, offering a strong sense of clear progression. Readers, however, may encounter this series out of order, or they may encounter numerous adapted versions of a story. Either way, they have to decide their own interpretative priorities. Back to top Introduction The concept of a sequence implies an orderly progression. A series of books conveys the sense of a logical advancement through a character’s life or a succession of events, intelligibly assembled into a system that is sometimes even numbered for maximum clarity. Such a sequence of novels frequently uses time as an organizer—either moving through part of a character’s lifespan or manipulating the calendar to run on a repeat cycle through (for example) Nancy Drew’s eighteenth summer. We know that life is not as tidy as the stories conveyed in books. But, in the case of series, even the material presentation of the books is misleading; despite the neat row of ascending numbers on the books’ spines, readers encounter a series of titles in partial, messy, sometimes consuming, and sometimes unsatisfying ways. Furthermore, in the clutter and circularity of contemporary culture, book series in their pristine order on the shelf frequently do not represent the only versions of characters and events. Media adaptations, publishers’ reworkings, fan variations, and a plethora of consumables all offer forms of what we might call “re- presentation,” and there is no telling what route through this busy landscape of reiteration any particular reader may take, or what version of the story they may encounter before reaching the original version.

INFOKARA RESEARCH ISSN NO: 1021-9056 Visual Wonders vs Novelist’s Perspectives in Anne of Green Gables M.Esther Assistant Professor of English Fatima College, Madurai [email protected] Abstract: Most of the Film makers use literature as their medium of source. Many Films are mainly based on Novels. However, each of them use different ways to narrate similar stories. Umpteen numbers of literary masterpieces are represented through films. Quite often, people like to compare the novel with the film that tells the same story, and many people are inclined to agree with the opinion that films could defeat the novels in telling the story. This paper situates Lucy Maud Montgomery's Novel Anne of Green Gables in the context of Film Adaptation by tracing the ways in which the Director Sullivan is different from the author. It explores the shifting role of a popular text to an entirely different medium. It focuses on how screened images function and affect the audiences rather than the readers of a book. It highlights how the visual wonders of the blockbuster hits and engages the audience through evoking emotions towards characters. Moreover, this paper conceives the idea that the differences between novels and films and how these two forms of media will never create the same effects on presenting stories. Summary: From the multiple film and television versions ofAnne of Green Gables to the weekly television series Road to Avonlea and Emily of New Moon, the numerous televisual adaptations of the work of L.M. Montgomery have enjoyed unprecedented popularity to viewers around the world while sometimes remaining enormously controversial to readers of her work. Thisfilmography will be updated on an ongoing basis on CCL's website at http://www.uoguelph.ca/ englit/cd/. his filmography began in December 1987 when, at age ten, I cut out TDavid Wesley's TV Times review ofAnne of Green Gables: The Sequel and saved it carefully in my box of newspaper clippings. Though that clipping now lives in a plastic sheet along with hundreds of other articles I have since clipped, printed off microfilm, or photocopied, it marked the beginning of a large enterprise prompted by a penchant for list-making. What is presented here is a preliminary filmography of the numerous film and television adap- tations of the work of L.M.
