THE CHILDREN NicoleDaniel Smith was born on September 22, 1986. He died on September 10, 2006 while visiting his mother and newly born sister in hospital in Nassau, Bahamas. Dannielynn Hope Marshall Stern was born on September 7, 2006, Nassau. The paternity was subject to open dispute. Although the birth certificate recorded Howard K. Stern as the father, a Bahamian judge later ruled the father to be Anna Nicole’s former boyfriend Larry Birkhead.

THE LAW SUITS After the death of J. Howard Marshall II, a legal battle for his estate began that still continues. Interested parties include Marshall’s relatives and Anna Nicole Smith’s daughter. Judgements in favor of and against Smith have been given in different courts. A final outcome is still awaited. Several of the prescription drugs indicated in Anna Nicole Smith’s death were prescribed for Howard K. Stern. He was subsequently charged, along with two oth- ers, for his alleged part in providing Smith with controlled substances. He pleaded not guilty at the trial, which began in August 2010, but was found guilty on October 28. On January 6, 2011, his conviction was set aside.

George Segal (1924—2000), a native New Yorker who showed with the Pop artists in the 1960s, was one of the most recog- nized sculptors of the 20th century. He was represented by the Sidney Janis Gallery for over 30 years and his signature plaster figures are in museum collections throughout the world. His best known bronze public commissions include the FDR Memorial, 1991 (Washington, DC); The Commuters, 1980 (Port Authority Bus Terminal, New York); and the commemorative bronze, Gay Liberation, 1980, in Sheridan Square, New York. In 1999 Segal received the National Medal of Honor from President Clinton. The artist’s many museum exhibitions include retrospectives at the Whitney Museum and Jewish Museum in New York and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institu- tion in Washington, DC. Segal has been praised for the delicacy and intimacy of his figures and for the range of themes he has undertaken. Casting directly from his models, as the artist stated, his sculptures retain an indelible element of the sitter’s spirit and uniqueness. The fragment shown here, Torso: Hand on Thigh, conveys the complex mood, gesture, and sensuality of a woman.

The rearranged score of A Rite mixes in selec- tions from a variety of recording styles and genres; one section is even sung by the cast. “I listened to music madly for two years with the score in front of me,” Wong exclaimed. “I could sing the whole thing to you.”

In one rambunctious passage that begins with a cacophonous, dissonant jazz rag and segues into a big band sound, the companies break out into the Charleston and other audacious American dance styles. “Were the rhythms in The Rite precursors of the jazz age?” asked Jones. “The modernity we attribute to Stravinsky was already existing in other forms not as well recognized. The Parisians were shocked by the turned in knees of Nijinsky’s choreography, but they’d be doing the Charleston on the Champs-Élysées a few years later.”

Bringing together these two companies, with their very different disciplines and specific tech- niques, required cross training and opening up to each other. The hybrid work, which features equal parts dancing and acting is as much a tribute to these two communities as it is to the Hans was Heiri

Q: Have you two worked together before? How did you come to work together on this project? FH: In 2005, I hired Manny to perform in my then-work in progress samurai-manga-opera, Deadly She-Wolf Assassin at Armageddon!, developed by the Japan Society. A year later, in 2006, I was hit by the cancer bomb and everything was postponed. In 2012, knowing that I am going to die from stage 4c metastatic cancer, I decided to spend my personal finances and do a complete, fully staged production of She-Wolf—the last show I had done before the cancer diagnosis—and hired Manny to be the choreographer. Enter the 2013 BAM Next Wave Festival. It was only natural to continue to work with Manny in adding the martial arts movement component to The Sweet Science Suite.

Q: Fred, what were you looking for in a choreographer? FH: As with all my artistic collaborators, I want someone who is adventurous with an assas- sin’s precision and relentlessness. A martial arts choreographer isn’t a fight choreographer who has been stereotyped and mitigated in stage combat assignments. Rather, that person is really a choreographer who happens to use martial arts movement as their primary vocabulary and expression. They use the martial movements and props (such as weapons) to express the entirety of the human experience, transgressive beauty, and intensely revolutionary imagination.

Planned Giving Another way to help BAM prepare for the future is by making a provision in your estate plans. You create a legacy for many generations to come and ensure BAM’s excellence continues for the next 150 years. Existing options for planned giving include making a bequest in your will, and naming BAM as a beneficiary in your retirement plan or insurance policy, among others. Unless otherwise specified by a donor, it is BAM’s policy to apply planned gifts toward its endowment. Individuals who have made such gifts are recognized in the select group of patrons known as BAM Angels.

Our special thanks to the foresight of the charitable BAM Angels listed below.
