Podcasting and the utilization of various types of podcasts are discussed as an efficient means of providing mobile students in a part-time degree programme with learning content. Crucial to the success of podcasting is the chosen course design that mixes face-to-face phases with distance learning phases based on the delivery of appropriate content embedded in podcasting episodes. The type and output format of those episodes has to be chosen accurately according to the applied usage scenario. 1 Introduction The educational landscape and especially Higher Education is characterized by a significant increase in the number of part-time (postgraduate) studies. New and elaborated didactic concepts have to be applied in part-time degree programmes to achieve the teaching aim and also meet the requirements of students. Blended learning concepts are often applied in part- time studies since they mix phases of attendance in the classroom and distance learning phases [1][2]. Blended learning introduces online or mobile media into a course programme while at the same time retains face-to-face contact and other traditional approaches to support students [2]. Different models of teaching and learning can be implemented based on various amounts of blends of face-to-face activities and online activities [1]. Slade III This dissertation investigates the experiences of participants in a text-based virtual reality known as a Multi-User Domain, or MUD. Through in-depth electronic interviews, staff members and players of Aurealan Realms MUD were queried regarding the impact of their participation in the MUD on their perceived sense of self, community, and culture. Second, the interviews were subjected to a qualitative thematic analysis through which the nature of the participant’s phenomenological lived experience is explored with a specific eye toward any significant over or interconnection between each participant’s virtual and material experiences. An extended analysis of the experiences of respondents, combined with supporting material from other academic investigators, provides a map with which to chart the synchronous and synonymous relationship between a participant’s perceived sense of material identity, community, and culture, and her perceived sense of virtual identity, community, and culture. -

To inform this process, LMCC invited six artists and arts professionals effectively using social media to share their approaches, successes, and lessons learned. LOWER MANHATTAN CULTURAL COUNCIL (LMCC): Briefly describe your work as an artist and any other roles or affiliations you have as an arts professional. KIANGA ELLIS (KE): Following a legal career on Wall Street in derivatives and commodities sales and trading, I have spent the past few years as a consultant and producer of art projects. My expertise is in patron and audience development, business strategy and communications, with a special focus on social media and Internet marketing. I have worked with internationally recognized institutions such as The Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Sotheby’s, SITE Santa Fe, and numerous galleries and international art fairs. I am a published author and invited speaker on the topic of how the Internet is changing the business of art. In 2011, after several months meeting with artists in their studios and recording videos of our conversations, I began exhibiting and selling the work of emerging and international artists through Kianga Ellis Projects, an exhibition program that hosts conversations about the studio practice and work of invited contemporary artists. I launched the project in Santa Fe, New Mexico ⎯Kianga Ellis Projects is now located in an artist loft building in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. -

Introduction “What’s the most amazing thing you’ve ever found?” Mac (Peter Riegert) asks Ben, the beachcomber (Fulton Mackay), in the 1983 film Local Hero. ”Impossible to say,” Ben replies. “There’s something amazing every two or three weeks.” Substitute minutes for weeks, and you have Twitter. On a good day, something amazing washes up every two or three minutes. On a bad one, you irritably wonder why all these idiots are wasting your time with their stupid babble and wish they would go somewhere else. Then you remember: there’s a simple solution, and it’s to go offline. Never works. The second part of this quote has been altered: Instead of “Twitter”, the original text referred to “the Net“, and instead of suggesting to “go offline”, author Wendy M. Grossman in her 1997 (free and online) publication net.wars suggested to “unplug your modem”. Rereading net.wars, I noticed a striking similarity between Grossman’s description of the social experience of information sharing in the late Usenet era and the form of exchanges that can currently be observed on micro-blogging platform Twitter. Furthermore, many challenges such as Twitter Spam or ‘Gain more followers’ re-tweets (see section 5) that have emerged in the context of Twitter’s gradual ‘going mainstream’, commonly held to have begun in fall 2008, are reminiscent of the phenomenon of ‘Eternal September’ first witnessed on Usenet which Grossman reports. -

7.1 LESSON 7 Sending Newsgroup and Instant Messages After completing this lesson, you will be able to: Send and receive newsgroup messages Create and send instant messages Microsoft Outlook offers some alternatives to communicating via e-mail. With instant messages, you can connect with a client who is also using instant messaging to ask a simple question and get the answer immediately. On the other hand, Newsgroups allow you to communicate with a larger audience. When considering the purchase of a new graphics program, for example, you can solicit advice and recommendations by posting a message to a newsgroup for people interested in graphics. You don’t need any practice files to work through the exercises in this lesson. Sending and Receiving Newsgroup Messages A newsgroup is a collection of messages related to a particular topic that are posted by individuals to a news server . Newsgroups are generally focused on discussion of a particular topic, like a sports team, a hobby, or a type of software. Anyone with access to the group can post to the group and read all posted messages. Some newsgroups have a moderator who monitors their use, but most newsgroups are not overseen in this way. A newsgroup can be private, such as an internal company newsgroup, but there are newsgroups open to the public for practically every topic. You gain access to newsgroups through a news server maintained either on your organization’s network or by your Internet service provider (ISP). You use a newsreader program to download, read, and reply to news messages. -

Social Media Social media is media designed to be distributed through social interaction using Internet and web-based technologies. Social media use is said to be the defining factor in the idea that the current period in time will be defined as the “Attention Age.” Wikipedia lists the following information and examples of social media: Social media can take many different forms, including Internet forums, weblogs, social blogs, wikis, podcasts, pictures, video, rating and bookmarking. Technologies include: blogs, picture-sharing, vlogs, wall-postings, email, instant messaging, music-sharing, crowdsourcing, and voice over IP, to name a few. Many of these social media services can be integrated via social network aggregation platforms like Mybloglog and Plaxo.
