They know they are the market leader and use their market power to make excessive profits. It seems that they have been guilty of this sort of behaviour in other countries and have been forced to change their pricing, In America they were seen to be charging an unfair price for their sonically inferior product when compared with the CD and were forced to change their pricing. On 4th July 2001 Jill & I flew to California to spend some time with our friends Debra & Andrew Teton in Santa Barbara and watch a few fireworks on the beach – oh, and catch a Spy Boy gig at Gaineys Winery. We also met Iris Rudeseal for the first time and I became firm friends with Emmy’s drummer, Brady Blade. Hazel and I had nearly met him the previous August in Scotland - he had red hair (well ginger actually) in those days and we couldn’t be sure it was him. In any case why would he want to speak with us? As it turned out Brady is one of the nicest guys you could hope to meet and he later introduced me to the music of the Indigo Girls with whom he was touring that year. If you remind me later I’ll tell you about the hilarious night Jill & I went to see them at Concorde II in Brighton. I was desperate to visit Borders on State Street and pick up some Ricky Nelson re-issues, which by some strange quirk of fate had been released to coincide with our visit. It turned out that Andrew knew Ricky’s cousin who regularly regaled him with stories about life with Ricky around the swimming pool (which had since been cemented over!). But then Andrew also bought a wicker rocking chair at Tule Zevon’s garage sale, little knowing that it had previously been occupied by Jordan, son of Warren! That’s the kind of backward friends I have.

UW-Osbltosb bas bad a bea~n clash with UW-System President Edwin Young when be rejected an appointment by the Oshkosh Student Association (OSA) ol two members to a Search and Screen committee which would select a new chancellor for Oshkosh . Young demanded that the OSA give him four names for possible appointment and be would select two of these. Oshkosh declined this roundabout method and instead submitted to Young its two choices which be claims are invalid. UW-Parkside bas suffered the loss of control of $430 000 in segregated fees to Chancellor Alan Gus~. (Segregated fees is the portion ortuition money that is used to fund various student activities.) . Guskin, according to the UW-Parkside pa~r, the Ranger, believed be was "forced mto this ... by unreasonable actions by the Segregated Fees Committee." These actions were the manner in which the Committee bandied the Athletic budget and its refusal to fund the new position of Dean of Student Life. In both cases there appears to have been a problem in communi~tion. Young ci~ a previous example as bis reason for refusmg to accept the appointments. He claims that the last · e be accepted two student appointments one ol the students allegedly leaked "confidential" information to the press. Young says that confidentiality is essential to the search and screen process and "the students selected someone who wanted to pull down that system." And, for giving Warren Zevon a career: Thanks always to Jackson! 2 Author’s Note and Acknowledgements The following text consists of an introduction detailing my personal relationship with Warren Zevon’s music, followed by three essays of a critical/analytical nature on different aspects of Zevon’s career: 1) a general overview of Zevon’s appeal as a literary and philosophical figure, 2) an exploration of his environmental crisis song, “Run Straight Down,” and 3) a commentary on the role of violence in Zevon’s songs.
